My great-grandmother Anna Chmela/Chmelar <as well as other various spellings> came to New York (Ellis Island) from Bohemia sometime during the turn of the century (19th to 20th). Her age at the time of immigration would be between 16 & 18 yrs old. She gave birth to my grandmother in 1904 at Sloane Maternity Hospital and two weeks later left her at New York Foundling Hospital and baptized the next day or two at St Vincent Ferrer’s Catholic Church where my grandmother spent the next several yrs until she was indentured out to a family in NH. Have always wondered what became of Anna..... there was no indication that she ever tried to find my grandmother in later yrs. Have corresponded with NYFH and their available info was limited. May have found her passenger listing at Ellis Island but not sure.... Always wondered if my great grandmother later married and had other children, if she made a life for herself or whether she died from the influenza or TB. It appears that this unfortunate young woman who came to this country alone was taken advantage of and left to handle what must have been a very difficult situation in 1903/04. I look forward to discussing ideas, suggestions as to research, leads, etc...

My wife's Chmeliar Ancestry migrated to American befor 1902. His name was Andrew (possibly Andre) Chmeliar. His parents were Andre Chmeliar and Maria. Andrew married Mary Ann Krescanko.

Are our Chmeliar's related?
