Chmela, Cantor, Cech, Vacek
Hi! Am the ggranddaughter of Tomas Chmela & Rosa Cantor Chmela, who came over from Bohemia (or Austria) in the late 1800's, and married in Chicago. Their children were Jerry, Jennie, Alice, Chickie (Charles), Bill (?), & Ed(?). All of the Chicago area. Jennie worked for Western Electric, and was rescued from the Chicago River when the Eastland rolled on it's side. She married Frank Cech on Valentine's Day in 1925. My grandfather was the sone of Rudolph Cech & Petronila Vacek from Bohemia. If anyone has any info on my family, I would greatly enjoy hearing from you. Sincerely, Sharon

I am wondering if your Chmela ancestors would be any relation to a 'Marie Chmela' living in Chicago 1941. She was listed as a witness on Naturalization Petition of my great aunt. Wondering about possible links to our family. (I have her address, if that would help confirm).

Dear Kristy, Hi! We did have a Marie Chmela in our family in 1941. She was married to one of my Grandmother's brothers, but I can't remember which one. I'll ask Mamma, and let you know. My Grama was Johanna (Jennie) Chmela Cech. Her parents are Tomas Chmela & Rosa Cantor Chmela. They were Bohemian, but came over from Austria. Rose, Edwin, Tommy & Charles are the only brothers & sisters I can remember for my Bubba, but there was evidence later that there was also a Jerry Chmela. Will let you know about Aunt Marie as soon as I talk to Mamma. Good to hear from you. Sincerely, Sharon.

Hi! My name is Stanislav Chmela and I am from Czech Republic. I am looking for informations about my surname and about my ancestry. First of all, Czech republic is divided to historical countries Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia and those counties were during 17th, 18th and 19th century parts of Austrian or later Austian-Hungarian Empire. So your forefathers could came both from Bohemia and from Austria, as Bohemia was part of Austria. Do you know exactly where they came from? Other surnames you mentioned are also Czech, not Austrian (eg. Cech, originaly Čech, it means just Czech). Otherwise, if you are interested, surname Chmela is not very common in Czech republic. More current surname is Chmelař - hop-grower, and Chmela is supposed to come from the same principle. Most people of this name lives in southern Moravia, especialy around small spa town Luhačovice and short-distance Uherský Brod or Zlín, less around towns Znojmo, Šternberk and Olomouc or in Bohemia around Hradec Králové, Písek or in capital Praha (Prague). Of course, people of this name lives in more places, but those are main areas as I found them in phone book and internet. One more thing - do you know how is Chmela readed in Czech? CH is diphthong and if you know Johann Sebastian BaCH, you know, how it´s readed. Sincerely, Standa.

My grandfather Francis Chmela was born in Chicago. He had two much older sisters who either married before or shortly after his birth. They were jewelers. When my great grandparents retired, they took the young Frank back to Slovakia until he returned with his wife Anna Balada, son Alois and their daughter MaryAnn was born in Chicago in the short time they stayed with family before settling permanently in New York. Sadly that generation is all gone so I have little info on his sisters. I do know they remained in Chicago, had children who may well be there right now. Any of that ring a bell?

Re: Chmela, Cantor, Cech, Vacek
I am helping my grandson with his family tree. He is the grandson of Wilma Jean Tims, whose mother was Jennie Violet Chmela who married Frank Anton Cech Sr. Do you have any birth dates, marriage dates, death dates, etc.? He told me that the sisters and brothers of Jennie were Rose Safarik, Alice Beck, William, and Charles. He said that Frank's brothers and sisters were Rudolph Edward, Anton, Louis, Charlie, and Violet. Thank you for any information you could share.

Hello, I have just started to research the Chmela family tree and came across your post. Tom and Rose's son Bill is my Grandfather. I'd like to touch base and see if you could help with extending the family tree to earlier generations and to share that side of the family tree. I live in Texas, but travel to Chicago often to visit family. Bill Chmela 281-796-0670 bill.chmela@gmail.com
