Here are some phonetic variations of the surname from the Ellis Island database:

Cerenco
Cerenko
Cerinca
Cernca
Cernko
Cerrenka
Cherenka
Cherenko
Chernka
Chernko
Chiorenca
Cirinco
Cirncco
Cirnka
Czerenkho
Czerenko
Czerinka
Czernko
Gerenca
Herynko
Jerenca
Jernca
Jernco
Scernco
Scernco
Tschernko
Zernko
Zirenko
Thank you eGENEee for pointing out my error. Sometimes I try to simplify and as with everything else in life and genealogy, there is always an exception to the rule. What works for one does not work for the other or does not apply. Thank you.
Zlatica

ZlaticaBeca -- There are a couple of fallacies in your post that need to be addressed:

1) There might not be an "original" spelling for the surname and it might not have "been changed." Spelling was much more loose and not standardized in the past. Records were not so "official" as they are now. I've seen documents that have different spellings in the SAME document.

2) You can't say that family only went to family because then there would be no first immigrant! Immigrants often went to family but they also went to LAND and JOBS. Sometimes they went to none of these and just gambled on a fresh start in the U.S.

Maria
There is a GALICIA Ancestry board. You might want to post on.
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.ceeurope.histreg.galic...

Galicia.Austria: http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
http://www.galiziengermandescendants.org/ click on Maps of Galicia.

www.halgal.com
www.kresy.co.uk/galicja.html

Who changed the spelling? What is the original spelling? When did your ancestor come to America?

from NY Ellis Island:
Czerinka, Gyorgy Nugvar, Hungary 18 1894 1912
Czerinka, Hafia Hojos, Hungary 22 1889 1911
Czerinka, Mihaly Hojos, Hungary 0 1911 1911

Czerenkho, Ambrosi Mychmoz, Russia 31 1878 1909
Czerenkho, Stanislawa Mychmicz, Russia 10 1899 1909
Czerenkho, Stefania Mychmicz, Russia 22 1887 1909
Czerenko, Jozsef Henesz 31 1875 1906
Czerenko, Mariana Zaryca, Russia 17 1896 1913
Czerenko, Zofia DETAINED 0 1911 1911
Czerwenka, Adam Nyhelymagyarot, Austria 26 1887 1913
Czerwenka, Anastazya Rozyska, Austria 18 1894 1912
Czerwenka, Andras 25 1868 1893
Czerwenka, Angela Lipnicza, Hungary 10 1897 1907
Czerwenka, Karoly Lipnicza, Hungary 15 1892 1907
Czerwenka, Maria Lipnicza, Hungary 37 1870 1907

Its not like your ancestor just picked the place in America out of a phone book. He went to a place where someone from the family or the village was residing in. Family went to family. Common common and common tradition to observe.

Yes, the census says Carpathian (Rus), on the next census it said Austria. His death cert says Austria. His daughter was born in PA in 1899, so I know he came before that.
The family attended a Russian Orthodox church, but the priest has refused to look up the records on 3 occasions.
Suggestions?

Do you have full access to ancestry.com? They have a database. Unfortunately, you would need to do a soundex search -- which brings up hundreds of hits.

You could also try the National Archives. They have the original records. See their website:
http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/passport/

Did he have any siblings? If so, try researching their home town.

Other possibilities: military service records, local history/biographies, immigration record (there are several kinds - he may have had some papers and not all), passport application, obituaries, probate records (may have sibling info)

What was his occupation? If it had a "society" they might have a bio or death notice.

Also -- In an obit I noticed another Chirinko belonged to a Lithuanian society -- perhaps he was Lithuanian? (I sent you all the Chirinko obits I found via ancestry.com's Messages feature.)

Also, here's an excellent Eastern European genealogy site:
http://www.feefhs.org/

Yes.
Some records say Carpathia, Hungry, Austria-Hun.
I found a grandson of his who remembers Galicia. No family bibles, nothing on the cemetary stone, married in "the old country" so no marriage record. Am going to send for the state death certificate this week. What else do you suggest?

Galicia is where my family is from,I have found hometowns in Passenger lists, they might have it listed, some of mine do,
A death certificate might, but they can be unreliable,
you might check the cemetery, where he is buried,if he was
buried in a burial society, that was a clue for my G.Grandfather hometown.
