Generation No. 2

2. ANDREW12 Chidester (SAMUEL11, DAVID10 CHICHESTER, JAMES9, WILLIAM8, JOHN7, JOHN6, JOHN5, NICHOLAS4, RICHARD3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born October 18, 1720 in Simsbury, Hartford Co, CT, and died February 15, 1791 in Morristown, Morris Co, NJ. 1790 Census of Upper Mt. Bethel Twp., Northampton Co., PA. - Listed as follows;
Free white males of 16 years and upward, including heads of families. ---- 1.
Free white males under 16 years. ----- 4.
Free white females, including heads of families. ----- 3.

First Child Sam Chidester - born 1779 --- age in the 1790 census - 11 years.
Second Child Sam Chidester - born 1781 --- age in the 1790 census - 9 years.
Third Child Sam Chidester - born 1783 --- age in the 1790 census - 7 years.
Fourth Child Sam Chidester - born 1785 --- age in the 1790 census - 5 years.
Fifth Child Sam Chidester - born 1787 --- age in the 1790 census - 3 years.

1800 Census of Lower Mt. Bethel Twp., Northampton Co., PA. - Listed as follows;
1 male 1 to 10 years. 1 male 10 to 16 years. 1 male 16 to 26 years. 1 male 45 years and up; 2 females 10 to 16 years. 1 female 45 years and up;
It is now shown that Samuel and his family made a move from Upper Mt. Bethel Twp., to Lower Mt. Bethel Twp., and are now residing there.

First Child Sam Chidester - born 1779 --- not in 1800 census, would be 21 years
Second Child Sam Chidester - born 1781 --- age in the 1800 census - 19 years.
Third Child Sam Chidester - born 1783 --- age in the 1800 census - 17 years.
Fourth Child Sam Chidester - born 1785 --- age in the 1800 census - 15 years.
Fifth Child Sam Chidester - born 1787 --- age in the 1800 census - 13 years.
Sixth Child Sam Chidester - born 1789 --- age in the 1800 census - 11 years

The 1790 census gives a very skimpy version of the families of that time. However it was only intended to count the total number of individuals that existed then. The 1800 census breaks down the families much finer. Even though only the name of the family head is registered it is possible to start to recreate the family by age groups and a definite pattern begins to emerge.
Without definite dates of birth, the assumed years of birth will change. It is also very probable stillborn or children who died quite young existed.
As shown above, in the paragraph beginning with 1800 Census of Lower Mt. Bethel Twp., only 5 children are now included, which means one, probably the oldest could have moved out or may have even died. As child number 1 is the oldest and of age we will assume he moved away, leaving only 5 children at home after 10 years.
It is also now possible to fairly well determine the gender of the children.
Because of the census breakdown by male and female age groups it is much easier to start building the family. It is fairly safe to assume children numbers 1, 2, & 6 are male. Because children numbers 3, 4 & 5 are in the same 10 to 16 year age group it is impossible to assume their correct order at this time, but we do know one is a male and two are female. -- However it is a place to start and we will proceed from here.

The 1790 census was taken from "First Census of The United States, 1790,
Pennsylvania; Editor - Ronald Vern Jackson; Publisher - Accelerated Indexing Systems International, Bountiful, Utah.
Samuel was listed on page 181 as "Chilchester", Samuel, as the head of the family.

The 1800 census was taken from "Pennsylvania 1800 Census Index; Editors - Ronald Vern Jackson and Gary Ronald Teeples; Published by Accelerated Indexing Systems, Inc.". The actual film reels, numbers 594 & 616, were then copied and and used as the basis of this report.

This Samuel and his family were only very recently discovered, (1/8/2000, by Paul E. Volpp), and much work is needed to establish the names of the children. It is hoped one of the children can be proven to be our Samuel, (they are all in the proper age group), and the missing link we have all been searching for for so many years to attach our Samuel of Pike Co, IL to the main body of the Chichester/Chidester Family Heritage.

iv. PHINEAS Chidester, b. July 13, 1757, Morristown, Morris Co, NJ.; d. April 22, 1814, Mendham, Morris Co, NJ; m. v. DR. DAVID Chidester, b. Abt. 1759; m. (1) HANNAH WARING, Bef. March 15, 1770; d. Abt. 1781; m. (2) MARY ELIZABETH PECK, Abt. 1782; b. Abt. 1764.
Notes for DR. DAVID CHIDESTER:
The various versions of the name CHITESTER, CHITTESTER, CHICHESTER and Chidester are prevalent in this report and as a rule evolve at some time into Chidester, especially in the lines that migrated to the west.

DAVID was of Danbury, Fairfield Co, CT during and before the Revolutionary War. Records of that time and place were casualties of the war. During the Battle of Ridgefield in 1777, in which so many of the CHICHESTERS of CT were involved, the residents of Danbury were forced to flee their homes. The entire area was pillaged and burned by the British. Town, Church and Family records perished. The only documents concerning the town and its inhabitants to survive were land records that were filed, fortunately, in other places. New Fairfield and Danbury are alternately shown as places of residence.

Certainly DAVID lived and married in Danbury.

Family tradition says that he was a Doctor and served in the Revolution. No official record proves it, but, just after the War, two of his children, listed as the children of "Dr. CHIDESTER", were baptized in Weston, Fairfield Co, CT.

"It can be ASSUMED that David moved his family to Weston to the care of relatives during the destruction and rebuilding of the town of Danbury". (CHB p52).

NOTE #1: It is also probable that he moved to Huntington, Suffolk Co, L.I., NY. during this same period and stayed with relatives there as the following will show. (PEV). See NOTE #2 following.

1770; On March 15, 1770, DAVID CHICHESTER and his wife HANNAH, of Danbury, Fairfield Co, CT, sold to THADDEUS WARING a parcel of land in Norwalk, CT., that HANNAH had inherited from her father, JOHN WARING. THADDEUS was her brother. (Grantor Deeds, Fairfield Co, CT. - B 1 14 pg 376).

1773; April 6, 1773, "BENJAMIN Chidester, son of DANIEL Chidester of Mallbury Precinct, Decd. a minor of Danbury, being of age for the choice of guardian & having made choice of DAVID Chidester to be his guardian". Court approved and DAVID posted a bond of one hundred pounds. (Probate Records, Hartford, CT).

1777; July 19, 1777, "I DAVID Chidester of Danbury, Fairfield Co, CT". sold land to EZRA STARR. (Danbury Reg. of Deeds V 3 pg 233).

1779; Weston, Fairfield, CT., Church records, p8: "A record of those who have been admitted to renew Covenents, Doct. Chitester and wife renewed covenants", 12 Dec. 1779; Doct. CHITESTER and wife renewed covenenants". The same day "REBECCA, daughter of Doct. CHITESTER, baptized".

1780; October 6, 1780 -- a deed was issued for property laid out for DAVID Chidester in Danbury.

1781; September 2, 1781, "HANNAH, daughter of Doct. CHITESTER baptized by Rev. SAMUEL SHERWOOD, Norfield Congregational Church in Weston, Norfield Parish".

HANNAH must have died soon after the baptism of her last daughter, for all land transactions from then on cocerning the property that had been held jointly by the couple was sold by DAVID with no mention of his wife.

1782; On August 27, 1782, Rev. JOSEPH PECK released and quit claimed property to "DAVID Chidester and MARY his wife", of Norfield. (Deeds - Danbury, CT, V2 pg 86). This particular bit of property had been willed to MARY PECK, now the second wife of DAVID Chidester, by her maternal grandmother, ELIZABETH STARR CHURCH, 17 April 1778. At that time MARY was a minor and the property was given to her father to care for. By 1782 she had either reached her majority or marriage had given her adult status. MARY was probably about 18 years of age at this time, (1782), which would give her a birthdate of about 1764.

1782; The following month, 9 Sept. 1782, "DAVID Chidester and MARY his wife, both of Fairfield, CT", sold this property to JOSEPH WILDMAN. (Register of Deeds, Vol 1 pg 182).

1782; October 12, 1782, for thirty nine pounds, bought a lot with house from SAMUEL HIGGENS. The same day, "I DAVID CHICHESTER in Fairfield Co., State of Connecticut" sold other property in Norwalk to EBENEZER GILBERT, "Furthermore, I the said DAVID Chidester do . . . . bind myself . . ." signed: DAVID Chidester. (Deeds B 1 15 pg 290).

According to these documents we know that DAVID was an adult by the year 1770; That sometime before 15 March 1770 he married HANNAH WARING, the daughter of JOHN WARING and KATHERINE TUTTLE, natives of Norwalk, Faifield Co, CT.

THERE IS NO DOUBT THERE WERE CHILDREN BORN IN THE EARLY 1770's BUT NO RECORD HAS BEEN FOUND, ALTHOUGH A DAVID JR. WENT WITH THE FAMILY LATER TO NEW YORK. (CHB p 53P).

The known children are:

REBECCA Chidester b - 12 Dec 1779, Weston, Fairfield Co., CT; md probably in Pompey, Onondaga Co., NY. to PALEY HALE. (PALEY is questionable).

HANNAH Chidester bp 2 Sept. 1781, Weston, Fairfield Co., CT. md probably in Pompey, Onondago Co., NY. WILLIAM OLDEN or OLDREN.

1787; Sometime before August, 1787, the Chidester family left CT, moving first to Stillwater, Saratoga Co, NY. (Stillwater is on the Hudson River, north of Troy, NY., and north of Waterford, NY., and close to Schaghticoke, NY).

1799; Their next move, before 1799, was to Cazenovia, Madison Co, NY., living in that Township until after the 1800 census was taken which showed the family with 2 males 16 - 26, 1 male 45 plus, one female under 10, 1 female 10 - 16 and one female 26 - 45. (Cazenovia is quite a way west of Stillwater, close to the Onendaga County line, and a little south and east of Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY).

1810; the family was now in Pompey, Ononaga Co, NY. with 2 males 10 - 16, 1 male 26 - 45; 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 - 26, 1 female 26 - 45 and 1 female 45 plus.

David must have died sometime before the 1810 census for he is not heard from again.

1830; His wife, MARY survived a number of years. In 1830 she appears in the Woodstock Baptist Church, Cazenovia, NY, as having been dismissed. It is not known if she removed to another Parish or may have died. If she had died the record would probably have so stated. She would have been only about 66 years of age at this time.

The material for this genealogical report was taken from "The Chidester - Chichester Heritage Book" by Elmer Clarence and Thelma Chidester Anderson. pages 51, 52, 53 and 54.
Their Source References as listed; (The Family History of JOHN PECK CHIDESTER; Presbyterian Church Records of Blissfield, MI; Tombstone Inscriptions, Blissfield, MI.)
It is safe to assume that all the material shown in this report, starting with DAVID, is as accurate as was possible at the time it was compiled, especially since this was THELMA'S own personal line, and ELMER took great pride and care in his research work.

However it must be stated here, as was also stated by ELMER, that great confusion existed in the early DAVID CHICHESTERS, and ELMER was not able to establish, in his own words, "chiseled in stone", a set of parents for this DAVID. ELMER had suggested in his book that SAMUEL who married MAHITABLE TULLER (CHB pp 19 & 20) was a prospect. However SAMUEL is one generation too many removed. ELMER also suggested DAVID CHITTESTER who married JEMIMAH HOUGH was a possibility because of the locations shown, (CHB pg 37). However this is another DAVID that he was unable to attach to a father, and it has been later shown that this DAVID was the son of DAVID CHICHESTER and ALICE BAYLEY, and would also be one generation too many removed.

IT MUST BE UNDERSTOOD AT THIS POINT THAT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ANDREW AS THE FATHER OF DAVID IS SPECULATIVE AND IS BASED ONLY ON WHAT ACCURATE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. IT IS A VERY PRACTICAL AND LOGICAL APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM USING WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE FAMILY. IT IS PROBABLY AS ACCURATE AS ANY VERSION SEEN SO FAR AND IS INTENDED TO GIVE THE SUCCEEDING GENERATIONS A COMPLETING LINK TO THE ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY OF THE PAST GENERATIONS OF CHIDESTERS.
OF COURSE, NOTHING IS "CHISELED IN STONE", as ELMER said, AND ANY CORRECTIONS OR ADDITIONS WOULD CERTAINLY BE WELL RECEIVED AS THIS IS WHAT GENEALOGY IS ALL ABOUT.
HOPEFULLY, USING THIS APPROACH, THE SHARING OF ACCURATE INFORMATION CONCERNING ALL THE CHIDESTERS, THE COMPLETE AND ACCURATE STORY MAY SOMEDAY BE TOLD. (PEV)

Notes for HANNAH WARING:
Hannah probably died soon after the Baptism of her second daughter, HANNAH, (between September 2, 1781 and August 27, 1782), for all land transactions from then on concerning the property that had been held jointly by the couple, HANNAH and David, was sold by David without mention of his wife HANNAH.

Notes for ELIZABETH SELZER:
She was mentioned as his first wife in the DAR index.
It is unclear how she fits into the picture.
Was she the mother of any of the first children?.
Did she die soon after her marriage?.
As we do not have a complete name for Frances, could it have been Elizabeth Frances Selzer or Frances Elizabeth Selzer?. Time will tell.

Notes for FRANCES ----?----:
She was living in 1796 when she appeared as a witness in a law suit, (Original County Court Files, Harrison Co., WV. Courthouse, Clarksburg, WV), but before 18 Jun 1798 when Holdredge and his wife Johanna signed an indenture.

Notes for JOHANNAH WELLS:
The three different spellings of her name, Jane, Johanna, HANNAH, all appear in the same deed in Harrison Co, WV. 1794.

She would have been 22 years younger than Holdredge at the time of their wedding, which was not too unusual at that time. She would have been 18 or 19 and he would have been about 40 years of age.

She was too young to be the mother of the older children shown in the first family, and secondly the places of birth of ALL the children of Holdredge, Sr. seem now to agree with the census reports of the various years.

She died after 1850, as she was listed in the 1850 census as the wife of her second husband, Benjamin Simon.

The following children may not be in the absolute correct order as only a few birth dates are verified by bible records, etc. Many are calculated from various census reports and they always vary.

It is also possible a few more children may have existed.

Notes for SILAS CHIDESTER:
The middle name, Thomas, with which he has been associated, is questionable and awaits definite proof.
His age at death was 59 years taken from the Cemetery records.
He died at Homestead Farm on which he was residing.
1798 (about), he removed to Harmonsburg, Crawford Co, PA

1820 - He may have died or deserted the family as Sally is enumerated with some of her children only, however it is possible and very probable he migrated to OH where most of the Chidesters he was related to went. Sally, his wife, was only 45 years of age when she died and he was only 45 years of age at that time also. He could be the Samuel in Huron Co, OH or the Samuel in Pickaway Co, OH, as no family has been established for them.

1850; He and Esther are listed on the WI census in Walworth Co.
1860; He and Esther are listed on the WI census in Dunkirk, Dane Co. and living with David and his wife, Ruth Celina Reed.
From LCS; I have David Chidester & Ruth Celins Reed as son of Moses Chidester. His father and two brothers joined the Mormon Church but followed the James Jesse Strang faction when they split off after the death of Joseph Smith. (Letter, 5 February 1990).
He and Esther may have died at Nauvoo, Hancock Co, IL, as stated in the above "Early History of the Town of Milford", but it seems more probable they died in Dane Co, WI.
