Bruce Chewning had over 20 children by three known wives. I was sent a picture of him as an old man but have seen none of him middle aged or younger.
I am the great grandson of William Bruce Chewning and Hester May Carter. My maternal grandmother was Katie May (Chewning) Harth. Bruce and Hester had several children, and I think Mary was the oldest. She was murdered in Roanoke in 1972 in her home. The case was never solved. I don't remember her married name at the moment. I know she had a daughter and for a while they believed her boyfriend to be a suspect.

I am the grand daughter of John William Chewning. About, 1960, Dobbs and Ethel visited us in Jenner, Louisiana, where I grew up!
hi! I am trying to track down any info on my gr-gr-grandfather (we know him as jacob a chewning), born circa 1855, who married my gggmther, fannie buckridge, in dallas county in 1871, and they had my gr grandfather, william henry chewning in 1873; jacob pretty much disappears somewhere around 1875, although rumors and family lore says that he was active as a cowpoke during the cattle drives through north texas until the mid-1890s and that he even had a second family with many children while leasing a ranch near denton, tx....?? does this sound at all familiar to any chewnings you may have found in your searches?? the only enduring and tantalizing hint in his sketchy bio within the family is that he came west to texas with his twin brothers...but we don't know if he was a twiin or if the other two siblings were the twins (arrgh!!!!!!!!!??)..as you can see, ANY info you may provide will be gratefully received, treasured AND appreciated!!! thanks! cathy

DNA Surname Project Announcement and Status

Posted at this link: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Chowning_Family/default.... is an Outline Descendant Report for Robert Chowning born Abt.1625 in England which has been color coded to represent the Chowning Y-DNA results available thus far (via FamilyTreeDNA and/or YSEARCH.) We have only a handful of Chowning men who have had the genealogical Y-DNA test but I think there have been just enough to demonstrate one of the ways that DNA testing can be very useful for the family researcher struggling with a partial and/or broken paper trail. I hope you'll take a look and let me know what you think!

This web page where the report is posted is one page of a small website provided by FamilyTreeDNA to host the Chowning Family surname project. I applied for and received approval in March of this year to establish a surname project and I am the project administrator. Just a couple of weeks ago we received the completed results and matches for two male cousins of mine that agreed to be tested to represent my line of the family. This project is open to all Chowning surname variants. Joining the project gives members access to group discount rates for both initial DNA tests as well as upgrades to DNA tests already taken. Click on "Join Request" in the blue bar in the upper part of the web page to join the family project and order a test or upgrade. Please don't hesitate to contact me here or via email if you have any questions or comments!

Yesterday after posting I checked the 3 books I have on teh Chewnings and I was wrong I do not have the South Carolina book. I think in the files on Richard Chewning, I have copies of pages from the book. I have a record where Richard got in trouble and his father William wrote asking for a pardon for his son and this document states he had 3 sons in the war. I have a listing of a Will for William Chewning in Caroline County dated 1809. The will did not survive, just parts of the index. I have a Court Case record many pages from Louisa County in 1794. (Louisa Co. VA) Book: 4, Page: 127, William Chewning, Type: Inv, Date: 09-Jun-1800
Inventory of William Chewning by John Lasley, Peter Crawford, Elijah Johnson, William Wash. Rec. 9 Jun 1800.
Chowning, Wm.
Date: Sep 29, 1768
Location: Caroline Co., VA
Record ID: 44944
Description: Grantee
Book Page: G
Property: 200 a. in Spts. Co.
Remarks: John x Beazley of Caroline co. to Wm. Chowning of Caroline co. £12 curr. 200 a. in Spts. Co. 5 Jun 1769.
Notes: This land record was originally published in "Virginia County Records - Spotsylvania County, 1721-1800, Volume . In 1785 tax list for Louisa County there is a William, Hardin and Richard Chewning. I also found in the lawsuit record for Louisa County that there were at least two daughters Philadelphia and Dinah. I have much more....but I am packing for a trip. Will be back next week. Feel free to email me. Tiffany Luchetta

Sorry to jump in here but I do have the book. I bought it a few years back. This is speculation but Theophilus Chewning was most likely from Louisa/Caroline Counties in Virginia. I do have a record of a William Chewning listing at least three sons, who served in the Revolution. These sons Thomas, Richard and Hardin Chewning. The name Woodruff Chewning was used in the family of Hardin Chewning who left Virginia and settled in Green County, Kentucky. He died soon after and his family moved I believe to Ohio. I don't have my file in front of me.

You are correct that Robert Gryder was the nephew of Sarah Elizabeth Chewning Busby. His mother was Sarah Elizabeth's sister, Mary Frances, and his father was James Gryder. James W. Grider was living with the Chewnings in 1880 and was listed as a farm laborer. He was probably your James Franklin. Are you sure Robert's father's middle name was Franklin? Some of the information I've seen on family trees posted on ancestry is incorrect.

Mary Frances' parents were George Tilford Chewning and Ursula Mattingly. They were married in Sevier County, Arkansas before 1846. Ursula was supposedly where the Eastern Cherokee Indian heritage came from. Applications were filed by Sarah Elizabeth Chewning and Robert D. Busby's children for "a share of the money appropriated for the Eastern Cherokee Indians by the Act of Congress", but the claims were rejected as Ursula and family "resided in Arkansas in 1834-35 and were therefore considered 'old settlers,' if Cherokees at all."

I don't know what happened to Robert Gryder's parents other than that M. Frances died in 1888 when Robert was only 2 years old. I'm pretty sure that James remarried, but I don't have the name of the second spouse.

Hope this helps.
THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS/INPUT. I HAVE LONG SUSPECTED THAT THE KENTUCKY CHEWNING'S CAME DIRECTLY FROM THE VA CHEWNING FAMILY DUE TO THE NAME THEOPHILUS AND WOODRUFF BEING IN BOTH FAMILIES (MY GRANDFATHER, FATHER AND BROTHER ALL HAVE THE MIDDLE NAME OF WOODRUFF - SC CHEWNINGS).
THANKS FOR THE INTEREST. I DO NOT HAVE THE PAGE NUMBERS CLOSE BY. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT MY CHEWNINGS' DID NOT MAINTAIN CLOSE CONTACT AS THEY MOVED FROM PLACE TO PLACE.
MY GREAT GREAT GREAT GRAND FATHER WAS THEOPHILUS CHEWNING. AS TO THE BOOTLEG STORY I HAVE NOT HEARD THAT BEFORE. HOWEVER, IN THE PAST YEAR OR SO I INTERVIEWED MY DAD'S BROTHER, CHARLES THEODORE CHEWNING AND HE TOLD ME THAT THEIR FATHER, RICHARD WOODRUFF CHEWNING, MADE MOST OF HIS PROFIT AT HIS GENERAL STORE IN DAVIS STATION, SC, BY SELLING SUGAR TO BOOTLEGGERS.PLEASE CONTACT ME DIRECTLY AT wade@jchewning.com I WOULD LIKE TO CONFIRM WHAT APPEARS TO BE TRUE IN THAT ALL THE CHEWNING'S IN THE OLD SUMTER DISTRICT WERE/ARE RELATED.
I found a marriage for James G. Gryder to Mary Tuning on 10 Mar 1881 in Ellis County, TX, at www.FamilySearch.org in the database for TX Marriages 1837-1973. Tuning was sometimes used for Chewning/Chowning. The "G" could have been a misreading of a "F" for Franklin. Also, I saw an Alice E. Bushby who married James W. Grider on 4 Sep 1887 in Red River County, TX. These may be your folks. Hope so anyway!
Diane M. Gray

I have found a Brunson - Chewning connection: Trigg County, Kentucky birth certificates for Sarah E Chewning in 1853, Louisa L Chewning in 1856 and L A Chewning in 1859. Parents are listed as P E Chewning and Mary Brunson (spelled Bunson on Louisa's record.)

P E Chewning is probably Phillip Chewning b.abt 1823 in Kentucky. Found in the 1850 census in Stewart county, TN and in the 1860 census in Trigg county, KY. And in Missouri in 1870 and 1880.

I haven't found any records that indicate how Phillip is related to Thomas L. In the 1880 census, Phillip lists his parents as born in North Carolina whereas the records we have for Thomas L indicate a birthplace of South Carolina although we know he had connections in both North and South Carolina. The surname Chowning or Chewning is an uncommon name and I've yet to find any two people of that surname in close proximity that were not related so I would put my money on a close relationship, i.e. father-son or uncle-nephew.

Thanks for the Primitive Baptist link, their index indicates that they have some Chewning obituaries that I would like to get copies of. Here is another link for a source for original Baptist documents: http://baptisthistoryhomepage.com/ I was able to find my direct ancestor Robert Chowning mentioned in the church book minutes. I got a kick out of the fact that he was called to account for the drinking of spiritous liquors to excess ;-)

Re: Thomas L Chewning -Trigg County, Kentucky

Unfortunately I don't have a direct answer to either of your questions but I do have a few bits of information that may give you a few new leads to chase. BTW, I have done some minimum research on most Chewnings or Chownings that migrated to Kentucky from the late 1700's through the 1800's in the course of trying to trace my own direct line. The T Chewning in the 1860 Census of Trigg County, KY was not a direct ancestor of mine and once I was fairly confident of that I did not research him or his descendants further.

Here are a few things I found that you might find useful for further research:

1. There is a personal website http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/h/o/James-Shola... by a James Sholar that has information and a family tree for the Chewnings of Trigg County.

2. I have been able to find many of the records that James Sholar mentions on the Ancestry website. One of the facts he asserts that I have NOT been able to prove is that Nancy Cox was the second wife of Thomas L Chewning. A daughter, Martha, death record indicates that her mother's first name began with "N." A son, John E, 1880 census record indicates that his mother and father were born in South Carolina. South Carolina as a birthplace is consistent with the history that James Sholar gives.

3. An 1820 census for Trigg County lists a Thomas S Chuoning who is 45 or over with two males under 10 and one female 16 thru 25. On the prior row on this census page is a Mary Cox aged 26-44 with 5 children. Sholar documents his reasoning for why he believes Thomas migrated to Trigg County circa 1815 at the link I gave earlier. If the age and middle initial are incorrect then this could be him. People next to each other on the census are frequently neighbors.

4. There is an international marriage record for a Kentucky marriage in 1838 of a Nancy Cox to a john L Branson. Nancy's birthplace is given as Kentucky and John's as Virginia. There were several women named Nancy Cox living in Kentucky in this time period so more info is needed to determine if this record is relevant but the surname Branson similarity to Brunson household where we find Thomas in 1860 census was intriguing.

I would be very curious to hear whether or not any of these puzzle pieces of info fit with each other or into the family tree. Please let me know if you figure out the Brunson/Chewning/Cox connection.

Thanks...Peg

Thomas L Chewning -Trigg County, Kentucky

In the 1860 Census of Trigg County, my great great grandparents,John Brunson and Polina (listed on census as JT and PW) are in the same household as Thomas Chewning (listed as T Chewning) I am trying to figure out if there was a family connection or a marriage connection. Many of the posts that I have seen are 10+ years old. I am hoping someone would see this, and would have information.

Looking for information on James Brunson b1848 TN, possibly the son of John b 1825 TN, and Caroline (Perlina) Brunson b 1829 VA. John is in the 1850 census of Stewart County, TN.

1850 Census of Stewart County
John Brunson	28
Caroline Brunson	24
James Brunson	2

This family moved to Trigg County, Kentucky

1860 Census of Trigg County

J T Brunson	30 (he was actually 40 at this time. born about 1820-1825)
P W Brunson	40
J A Brunson	10
B T Brunson	7
A S Brunson	6
T Chewning	65

Thomas Chewning owned land in Trigg County.

Grantee:	Chewning, Thomas
Acres:	50
Book:	Q
Survey Date:	14 Dec 1824
County:	Trigg
WaterCourse:	Dry Cr

email: mooniegirl@gmail.com

Re: Thomas L Chewning -Trigg County, Kentucky

Looking at #4, I do know that Branson-Cox marriage isn't apart of my line, or it is further up in the tree. Casey, TN, where it is reported that they lived, is southeast of Louisville.

I know that there are mentions in some records in Stewart County, TN of Thomas Chewning. Stewart County is directly south of Trigg County.

There is a big age difference between my great great grandfather to Thomas Chewning listed in the census record.

John T Brunson, b about 1825, birth listed as Tennessee
Thomas Chewning, b about 1795, birth listed as South Carolina

I do know that both families, Brunson and Chewning, have history in Darlington County, South Carolina.

I am pretty sure that the connection is not through John's wife, Polina Fuqua. The Fuqua family has extensive records on the members, and that is how I found John.

I have something else to put on the table. I have spent the past two days reading on the Primitive Baptist Churches that sprang up around 1810 until 1900.
http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/Fam...

Between census records and the general known history of some of the churches, I have found many of the families that migrated with the church. Before the family would move to another area, (such as from Stewart County, TN to Trigg County, KY)family members would be dismissed from the church, and then join one of the sister churches. That may be the way I would have to find the connection.

For instance, I know that John and Polina Brunson left Stewart County, TN and moved to Trigg County. I also know that Thomas Chewning's land grant was near Dry Creek in Trigg County, Kentucky.

Church listing for Stewart Co, TN: SALINE CREEK (BUMPUS MILLS)(1810)

Saline Creek Church was organized May 19, 1810, by members dismissed for that purpose from Dry Creek Church, in Kentucky. The charter members were Thomas Ross, Nathan Ross, Asa Biggs, Wynea Biggs, William Hubbard, Sally Hubbard, and John Ferrill. The church was a long-time member of the Little River Association.

Along with this information, I have this post:
(I have capitalized all names that matched DRY CREEK (LINTON) Church,Trigg County)
SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

Acree, Allen, ANDERSON, BAKER, Ballance, Barnes, Bell, Berry, Biggs, Bragg, Brewer, BRUNSON, Bunting, BYRD (or listed as Burd), Cherry, Cobb, Copeland, Cotton, COX, Cunningham, Daniel, Davis, Dudley, Dunlop, Ellis, Ferrill, Fletcher, Ford, Franklin, Frizzel, Garner, HAMILTON, Hannon, Hargis, Harmon, HODGE, Hooks, Hubbard, Jackson, Jolly, Jones, Kelly, King, Lassiter, Leggett, Lewis, LINDSEY, Luten, Manning, Mays, McAdams, McClanahan (MCLAIN?), McKinney, MORGAN, Morris, Nelson, Neville, Overton, Page, PARKER, Reddick, Rogers, Ross, Russel, SCOTT, Scruggs, Shearman, SKINNER, Stalls, Stancil, TAYLOR, Valentine, Wallace, Ward, Warren, Weeks, Whitehead, Whitford, WILLIAMS, Yarbrough (incomplete)

Now, here is the listing for Dry Creek Primitive Church:
DRY CREEK (LINTON)(1805)

Dry Creek Church, near Linton, was organized October 26, 1805, by Elders S. J. Brooks and Samuel Skinner, and brethren Elias Fort Sr. and Sugg Fort. The charter members were probably dismissed for that purpose from Red River Church. Names of some of the early members included the following: Elder Dudley Williams, Elder Samuel Skinner, Jonathan Taylor, Caleb Lindsey, Nathaniel Parker, William Skinner, Henry Skinner, Charles Brandon, Theophilus Skinner, James Lindsey, Moses Larrisy, Joseph Boren, Benjamin Wilson, William Hubbard, Joseph Miller, John Miller, John Mills, John Denson, Sarah Lindsey, Judah Skinner, Sally Wilson, Nancy Skinner, Rhoda Taylor, Elizabeth Wester, Sarah Feutral, Rachel Skinner, Sally Hubbard, Hannah Larrisy, Rachel Brandon, Marion Wills, Esther Denson, Rachel Roscoe, Sarah Wilson, Margaret Holland, Isabel Craig, Nancy Grinnal, Nancy Boren, Patience Joiner, Elizabeth Read, Malinda Read, Mary Read, and Barsheba Colson.

The first pastor was Elder Dudley Williams. He was followed by Elder Samuel Skinner, who also donated the land on which the original log building was erected. Subsequent pastors have included Elders Reuben Ross, Jesse Cox, W. H. Dyer, J. L. B. Darnell, D. R. Turner, J. N. Darnell, R. H. Hale, and David Mattingly.

The first log building was replaced by another log meeting house, and then by a frame building, in 1850. The present building has been bricked and is well-kept.

Dry Creek Church first became a member of the Red River Association, and then helped organize the Little River Association in 1813.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

Baker, Boren, Brandon, Bremmer, Brewton, Bridges, Brown, Brunson, Bruton, Burd, Carr, Chandler, Chappel, Cohoon, Colson, Cox, Craig, Darnall, Denson, Ezell, Foster, Futrell, Grinnal, Hamilton, Hargrove, Hargroves, Harrel, Hawkins, Heard, Hodge, Holland, Hubbard, Joiner, Land, Larney, Lindsey, Lowry, Luton, McLain, McNatt, Miller, Mills, Minton, Moore, Morgan, Noel, Parker, Read, Reed, Rodgers, Roscoe, Rose, Ryan, Scott, Shoulders, Skinner, Stilley, Sumner, Taylor, Terrell, Thomas, Tinsley, Tuppin, Turner, Vinson, Webster, Wells, Wester, Williams, Willis, Wills, Wilson, Wollard, Woods (incomplete due to lack of records).

This wasn't the only incident. The churches were apart of a bigger congregation named the Little River Association.

This is the 2nd family line that I have that seems to move during this time with a Primitive Baptist Church. My Bryson (Brison) family moved from Humphreys County, TN. I am almost positive if I can find more information about the Buffalo Primitive Church in Humphreys, I will find a connection.

Thank you. Since I live nearby in Marshall County, I will be going to Cadiz, Kentucky to look at some records. I think this is one of those cliff hanging relationships. Once I find out the connection, information will be flooding in. At least that is what we all dream that would happen.

Angel

The Augusta State University in Augusta, GA has a copy in their special collection. They do not loan it out. You can call them 706-737-1744 and if you know the page numbers, the lady in the special collection dept. said she could make copies and send them to me; however, I am going there tomorrow to do my own research on the Chewnings of SC. My grandfather, Leland Felix Chewning, born in Silver, SC is descended from Theo. Chewning. My uncle Rinehart Chewning, Leland's son, says he was told that Theo. was a bootlegger. Have you ever heard that story?

Jay:

At one time, during the 1980's, we must have written some genealogy notes about the Texas Chewning's. Samuel Dobbs Chewning would be my great uncle. He was in the Samuel and Emma Chewning family, living in Texas around Quannah and Grayson county area.

I started genealogy research around 1980, actually, we were living in Houston, Texas. This was before using a computer, just manually gathering of information, in various libraries ! At this time, a Tom Chewning of Cantonment, Florida wrote a number of letters, you may have corresponded with him too. Going back to the Alabama days, the history of Samuel Chewning, William Chewning, John J. Chewning, and Samuel Chewning of Baldwin County, Georgia.

I would be glad to share notes on Samuel Dobbs Chewning and other Chewnings, which we are both no doubt related to.

Sincerely,
Lynn Chewning Metzger
I am related to Chewning/Bushy through the Gryder/Grider size of the family. I have a 1900 census that states Sarah E Busby had a nephew living with her. His name is Robert Gryder. His father is James Franklin Gryder and I believe James married Mary Francis Chewning (many different spellings). Do you have any info on this because I can't find Robert, James or Mary anywhere. Robert is my gr grandfather. I have all recent info but no future info. Help if you can. thanks
Also, I have been told about the Cherokee Indian blood as well. Any info on that would be very grateful. my email is texwhitetiger@yahoo.com.
