Donald L. "Don" Chewning, 69, of New Philadelphia, Ohio died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 in his home, following a long battle with cancer.
Born Nov. 25, 1942, in Elkins, West Virginia, he was a son of the late French and Virginia (nee Sacks) Chewning.
Don attended school in West Virginia, and moved to Tuscarawas County, Ohio in the mid-1960's. He owned and operated Green Ridge Auto Body in New Philadelphia, OH.
Don loved playing pocket billiards, and did so every chance he could get. He was a member of the Tavern League, playing throughout Tuscarawas County, and was awarded many trophies during his lifetime.
Survivors include his wife, Linda (nee, Trucinski) Chewning, whom he married on Mar. 20, 1999; six daughters, Star (companion, Kevin Blackstone) Blackburn of Sebastian, Florida, Donna (husband, David) Knipp and Debbie (husband, Grafton) Jenkins, both of Baltimore, Maryland, Rachel Elliott of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kastava Ledger of East Sparta, Ohio and Sherri (husband, Christopher) Vogel of New Philadelphia; a son, Wilbert Brink of Dover, Ohio; nineteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Glenda (husband, Jerry) Bennett of Winesburg, Ohio, Sandy Polly of Wilmot, Ohio, Sharon Boggs of Youngstown, Ohio and Barbara (husband, Jess) Schultz of Mt. Eaton, OH; a brother, Teddy (wife, Mary) Chewning of Wilmot, Ohio; one half-sister; one half-brother; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by a grandson; a twin brother; a sister; two half-sisters; and one half-brother.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Pastor Don Snow of Calvary Baptist Church in New Philadelphia officiating.
Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, Dover.
Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in Calvary Baptist Church. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday, 5 – 8 p.m.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in Don's memory be made to Community Hospice, 201 W. Third St., Dover, Ohio 44622.
