There are about 20 spelling variations of the immigrant William Chesebrough with spelling variations of the name ranging from Chesbro/Chezbro to Cheeseborough/Cheezeborough. The vast majority of people with a name of one of the spelling variations are Williams's descendants or descendants of his probably related ancestors - all orginating from England.

Robert August Chesebrough, inventor of Vaseline was born 09 Jan 1837 in London when his family from the US was temporarily living there. He died at his home 11 Sep 1933 Spring Lake, Monmouth County, NJ, USA.

Robert began the manufacture of petroleum and coal products in 1858, being among the first to embark in the industry. The business steadily developed, and in 1870 he discovered and patented the product universally known as Vaseline. This product was early also called "Skunk Oil." In 1876 he organized The Chesebrough Manufacturing Company, which, in 1903, had branches in London, England; Paris, France; Berlin, Germany; and Montreal, Canada. In 1881 he erected an office building facing Battery Park, New York City, which was later removed and replaced by the Battery Park Building, the new Chesebrough Building was erected on the corner of Pearl and State streets, facing the park, and the new Maritime Building, in the rear of the Battery Park Building. The Chesebrough Building Company that was also founded by Augustus owned all three buildings. The Chesebrough Manufacturing Company became The Chesebrough Ponds Corp and the products are now sold through Unilever Corp.

My main interest is locating and recording William's descendants while helping "cousins" find their families connections. I would like to learn more about yours and add your family to my data of about 30,000 descendants. My most complete online data is easily reviewed at http://chesebro.net and my email is Larry@Chesebro.net
