Leila Bell Chasteen was Allie Virgie Day and Thomas Raymond Chasteen's daughter.

Virgie introduced my great grandparents to one another and Leila's sister, Rachel Lee Chasteen Trammell, who is now deceased, was my grandmother's best friend.

Rachel's obituary says that Leila Bell was living in Fort Worth, Texas.

I do not know what happened to Leila Bell or Virgie's other children and I would love to get in touch with them.

I just found this article today and my mother and I had no idea that any of this happened to Leila Bell.

I am the daughter of Homer Lee. Willie Mae was my dad's sister. My father passed away at the age of 44 in 1983 so I don't know much about his side of the family. I was 12 when he died. Would love to know more about you guys.

He was born in 1911 in Alabama and his mother's maiden name was Graff - she may have lived around Oregon County, MO. He died in California in 1964. I have a baby picture of him that I would like to get to a family member. He lived for a time with Clyde and Louise Barber.

Thank you so much for this post Ray. This is such great information. My G.G. Grandmother is Mary Ellen Shasteen Neal. Her father was Jacob, Jesse and Letitia Jane Jett's Child. Your post validated the information that I had thank goodness. It is such a confusing family tree, but it makes a whole lot more sense now. My family is all still in the Southern part of Middle Tennessee and she is buries in Franklin County with the rest of my family. I am also related to Elizabeth Cleveland Coffee through a different branch of my family so it was very surprising to see her name her as well. There are still many Shasteen's/Chasteen's in that area. I thought that the name difference was due to a spit between some of the brothers during the Civil War and members serving on different sides. I read that posted somewhere. I'm still not sure if its originally Shasteen or Chasteen. I'd love to see any more information you may have from Jesse on up. Especially above William Sr.

Researching Chasteens of clarkston washington. Have made alot of progress in my search, found my sister Laurie, alive and well in California, Turns out My grandfather John Elmer Griffin moved there with his second wife Miako. He died in 2001. Based upon my research, my ancestors are:

a. James Shasteen (1815-1887) who married Mary Ann Stichler (1815-1896) who then had
b. Mary Ann Shasteen (ab. 1850) who married Isaac N. Stout (1844) who then had
c. James A. (1868) and Fred D. (1875) Stout (I come from Fred.)

Am I on the correct thread post? If so, there is a lot I am trying to figure out.

Jerri Gearldine Chasteen
(May 28, 1928 - July 21, 2009)

Graveside funeral services for Jerri Gearldine Chasteen, 81 of Claremore, OK will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 24, 2009 at Fairview Cemetery in Pryor. Services are under the direction of Key Funeral Home of Pryor.

Jerri was born on the 28th day of May in 1928 in Pryor, OK to Earl Jessie Rogers and Olga Nancy Williams. She died July 21, 2009 in Claremore, OK. Jerri attended the first 8 years of school in Pryor and completed her education in California, where she achieved an Associates degree in Business Administration and Accounting.

Jerri enjoyed several occupations in her professional life. She worked for American Airlines and Douglas Aircraft. She became a licensed private investigator and worked for the Fletcher detective agency in Tulsa. Jerri and her husband later ran the CB shop and Truckers store in the Cherokee Truck Stop at Big Cabin. They became known from coast to coast by the truckers as “Copperhead and Deacon.” “Deacon,” Cloys Dwight Chasteen preceded her in death in 1984.

Jerri retired from the truck stop after Dwight passed and decided to focus her passion of Cherokee Tribal history and became a certified professional genealogist. She worked closely with Lee Fleming HR, and the Cherokee Nation to promote accurate research practices. She also worked with the National Archives and the Mormons library in Salt Lake as she established the Cherokee Archival Project. Collecting and translation of historical records relating to all of the 5 civilized tribes. She became the first Head Registrar for the Cherokee Elders Society, and worked as Vice President of the Twin Territory Historical Society for several terms. She was a board member of the Native American Arts Council and during the 80’s and 90’s, the Oklahoma Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court considered her qualified to give “expert testimony” on Cherokee History and Cherokee Citizenship Rights.

Jerri’s dedication to the creation of accurate records for valid tribal citizenship was her passion. Up until her passing, she maintained the leadership of several online group sites such as on ancestor.com and Cherokee.net.

Much of Jerri’s considerable research archives will be donated to the Pryor Library in hopes that everyone will be able to research their ancestors locally.

Jerri (Rogers) Chasteen is survived by one daughter Gloria Murray of Owasso, three grandchildren, Freeman Bull of Claremore, Nancy Neal of Claremore, and Debra Mouse of Chouteau; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one sister, Pauline Rundell, and many nieces and nephews in the Pryor Area also survive her.

Family will be greeting friends Thursday evening from 6-8 PM at Key Funeral Home in Pryor.

Hello. I am reviewing the message board looking for info on James Chastain, my gr grandfather, who died leaving young children near Cedartown, Ga in 1896. His wife was Susan Martha McWhorter who also died young in 1899.

Recently I have come across info that may indicate his parents were James Chastain (1830-1863) and Rebecca Jane, as well as 2 of their known children William and Nancy Iasabella. I'm hoping my James is also a son and looking for proof.

We have old pages , one from a small notebook & hard to read showing receipt from James Chastain to (JD??)Thurston and then to Sallie Thurston. Also a letter to James in Jackson, Ga postmarked from Flippen, Ga, Nov 4, 1887 addressed 'Dear Brother' from W (M?) Chasteen.

Any help? Also appreciate anything you may have. Thanks

I have them listed in my file, but I have no concrete evidence to prove their lineage.

Henry Chasteen was a son of Henry Chasteen and Pauline Hardin Chasteen.

Pauline was the daughter of James N. Hardin and Mary Susanna "Polly" Chasteen Hardin.
James N. Hardin was the son of William and Jemima Hardin.
Mary Susanna "Polly" Chasteen Hardin was the daughter of James Chasteen (Revolutionary War soldier)and Nancy Kennedy(Cannady) Chasteen.

Henry Chasteen was the son of Jesse Chasteen and Levelia Flowers Chasteen.
Jesse Chasteen was the son of James Chasteen (Revolutionary War soldier)and Nancy Kennedy(Cannady) Chasteen.
Levelia Flowers Chasteen was the daughter of Orson and Patsy Flowers.

If I can locate some proof of this, within my paperwork, I will post it on this thread at a later time.
