Search: Harriet CHAMPAGNE b. 1884

Harriet Champagne was born around 1884, give or take one year. She was born in Vermont. I don't know either of her parents' names but I know that her mother was born in Canada and her father was born in either England or Canada. She married Norman Ashbell Barnum on June 15, 1921. I know that in 1930 they were living in Middletown, CT in Middlesex county. Norman was born in October 1874 in New York and died in February 1941. Harriet also died sometime around 1941. Harriet was Norman's second wife. His first wife, Hattie Brown, was born in December 1878 in New York. Together, Harriet and Norman had only one son, Henry Champagne Barnum, who was born on January 28, 1930. Henry married Lucy DiPietro on April 12, 1949. Any information that oyu can give me on Harriet Champagne and especially on her parents would be greatly appreciated thank you.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Wilcox
Contact: wilcoxr06@yahoo.com
Researching: Barnum, Wilcox, Champagne, Watrous, Docking, VanDyke, DiPietro, and Motta
Jean Baptiste Champagne & Charlotte (Henry) Edelmeier-Louisiana

From: St Charles Abstracts of the Civil Records of St Charles Parish 1770-1803

No. 1873 dated April 25, 1803
Testament of Jean Baptiste Champagne Pere

No. 1874 dated August 1, 1803
Inventory of the community property of the late Jean Baptiste Champagne Pere and his wife, Charlotte (Henry) Edelmeier. At nine o'clock this morning St. -Amand in the company of Guillaume Beauvais and George Toups, arrived at the farm of Widow Champagne to inventory the community property. Inventory taken by Francois Brou and Michel Frilloux. Inventory revealed that the decedent owned 37 slaves. Also inventoried was a farm (which was community property, see No. 1863) 8 arpents wide by the customary depth, located about 22.5 miles above New Orleans on the right bank of the river descending, bounded below by the farm of Widow Pol (Hypolite) Chauvin and above by the farm belonging exclusively to Widow Champagne. The main house on this property was 18' x 30' with galleries in front and rear. The unattached kitchen measured 30' x 16' and included a dining room, an office and a room that served as a hospital. This building also had galleries in front and rear. The main house was constructed of wood with a brick chimney covered with wooden shingles. The kitchen was also made of wood with a shingle roof and shingles covering the sides. There was also a "mill" for rice, a store 30' x 18' and other out buildings including 11 slave cabins. There was a vegetable garden measuring about 3/4 of an arpent. The farm was appraised at 5600 piastres. (note: This is probably one of the best descriptions of an early nineteenth century "habitation."

Felix Shampine/Champagne? b 1843 Canada, lived Franklin/St. Law - Bombay, Brasher, New York

Hi,

I have information and photocopies of documents about Felix Shampine (Champagne?), born 1843 c in Trois Rivieres (Three Rivers), Quebec. In 1864 Felix enlisted in the U.S. Army, in Brasher, St. Lawrence County. A year later he was discharged. He served Union side in the Civil War. The 1880 Bombay (NY) census shows him living with wife Mary A., step-daughter Mary Ann (age 11), and Margaret Melren (age 78, relationship unknown). The 1910 census (Brasher) shows Felix and wife Mary, and states they were married 1878 (second marriages for both). Felix died in Cornwall, Ontario on 19 April, 1914 - I have the death record, filled out by his son-in-law, George Bailey. Parents are listed as unknown.

I am searching for information about Felix Shampine so that I may find more information about Mary A., his wife. She is my great-great grandmother. Marriage details to Mary A. would be great! Especially if it contains her maiden name!!! :)

Please contact me by email if you would like copies of these records, or have information about Felix for me.

Lydia
Joseph Champagne born in Canada and wife Mary in MA

Joseph Champagne , his wife Mary, and their children: This Joseph may have been born in Canada, but don't know where.
In 1910 Cenus :US Hamden County I think(Northampton area)
MA Their children were:
Joseph W was 11 (these could be off a bit)
Bernard J was 8(and this is in question too)
Ethel E was 16
and Mary F was 13 or so.

I am trying to find the Champagne family that connects to James Doyle. James was living with them(brother in law) in the 1910 census. I am trying to determine if this is the same James Doyle who married Ella V Joyce later on.
The surnames: Doyle, Ward, Joyce, Doherty, O'Donnell, Bradley, Nelson, Lynch, Kotarski, Sweeney, may connect indirectly to the James Doyle family I'm searching for.
But now I'd also like(if this is the right Champagen family) to learn how they connect to James(who was James sister? or how did they mesh.)

\If this is confusing I'm sorry, I'm still a bit confused too, just learned some of this today, and since James Doyle is such a common name, and apparently Champagne isn't exactly un-common either, it's a bit confusing.

Any help sorting this out would be appreciated. Thank you
If there are any decendents of any of these folks around and see this I'd love to hear from you too.
I'm trying to sort out a mystery that my family(cousins) and I have. My late aunt left us some genealogy paper work and the name Bernard J Doyle was on it,. mangaged to learn that his parents were James W Doyle, and Ella V Joyce, and he had 3 brothers James E, Raymond, and Robert. But still don't know why Bernard's name was on that information, and can't ask her since shes now deceased. I feel having known Mary that its got to be blood family or related by marriage somehow.

Thanks again
Sam

By 1871 Marie-Louise was deceased
and Pierre was remarried and living at Ste.-Adele. I know this couple had at least one child a daughter born circa 1864.
This daughter appears on the 1871 census at Buckingham age 7 and residing with her maternal grandparents Jean-
Baptiste Fauvel and Marie-Renaud.The census does not give us her first name only that her name began with the letter O.
Her grandparents were both deceased by 1881.I would
like to discover this childs first name.Would very much like
to know what became of this little lady.I know she had
stepbrothers and stepsisters at Ste.Adele from her father,s
second marriage. Would apperciate any information relating
to the Champagne family that was residing at Ste.-Adele
in the early 1870,s.Pierre,s 2nd marriage took place at
St.Jerome ,I believe in 1870.
thank you
Dennis

John Champagne and Magdeline King from Canada

Looking for ancestors of Albert Champagne, b. 9/17/1844 in French Canada, d. 9/5/1929 in Huron Co., MI. He was married to Emily Lenaway 1871 in Huron Co., MI. His death certificate has his parents as John Champagne and Magdeline King, both of Canada. I don’t know anything more about them. Family history tells us that Albert moved with his family to the Rutland Vermont area. His immigration date is 1868. It is said that John was a master stone cutter and also in the maple syrup business. Albert did not get along with his father and came to Michigan on his own. We know he had a lot of money, $35,000 which he put in the bank of Kinde in the 1870’s. He also sent his three daughters – Josephine(Mousseau), Elizabeth(Mousseau), and Anna(Reno) to New England finishing schools. On Albert’s marriage certificate, his name is listed as Alfred, and Emily’s is Amelia. I have found an Albert Shampine living in a boarding house in Grinstone, MI in 1870 working in the grindstone factory, I think that could be him. I have yet to find him anytime sooner. There are also family history stories about the family in the shoe making and textiles industries in the New England area. According to all family history, Albert was not related to Alex or Ben Champagne how also lived in Huron Co., at the same time period. Their family says the same thing. Their parents were Alexis Champagne and Rose Justice. Different family, but very similar in that they immigrated to Vermont and then Michigan. Any clues on John and Magdeline would be helpful.

Albert Champagne from Huron Co. MI, Vermont, Canada

Trying to find Albert Champagne (b.1844 in Quebec? Canada, d. 1929 in Huron Co. MI) prior to coming to Michigan. He maried Emily Lenaway (Lenoiu) about 1870. I don't know where.
I have him arriving in 1868 with his father, I believe from Canada into Rutland area of Vermont. I think his fathers name was Gregory or Gregorie. Gregory's father may also have been named Albert and he is said to have come from France.
Gregory was a master marble and stone cutter. They were also in the maple syrup business in Rutland. Albert did not get along with his father and moved to Michigan, first to the Port Hope/Grindstone area, and then to Huron Co. He first shows up in the 1880 census in Huron Co. MI. as Albert Champigne.
Albert was influential in getting St. Felix Catholic Church established near his home in Chandler Twp.
There may be indian blood mixed in somewhere between the first Albert and Gregory. Someone had married a woman from an indian reservation. I don't know who or where.
When Albert came to Michigan, he was quite wealthy. He had $35,000 in the bank of Kinde. And his three daughters, Elizabeth(Mousseau), Ann(Reno), and Josephine(Mousseau) went to a New York finishing school.
There may have been a name change in the moving to Michigan. Also, he spoke only French so names are subjective as we only have oral history from the Mousseaus.
Any help would be great.
I am seeking information regarding the children of Pierre
Champagne and Marie-Louise (Olezime)Fauvel , who were
married July 27 1863 at St.Gregoires ,s church in Buckingham
Quebec. I know that this couple had at least one child born
circa 1864,This child appears on the 1871 census at Buckingham .On the 1871 census ,no first name is giving for this on the first intial O. The census shows that this child was
7years old and residing with his/her maternal grandparents.
The grandparents were Jean-Baptiste Fauvel and Marie Renaud .This child is the person with the surname Champage
to appear on the 1871 census for the vilage of Buckingham.
I hope to learn what became of this child. Why was he/she
living with his/her grandparents? Were the parents of this child deceased prior to 1871.
All replies would be welcomed and appreciated
Kind reagrds
Dennis

Nicolas SYLVESTRE dit CHAMPAGNE: Carignan-Salieres?!

I have a problem.. one of my ancestors was Nicolas SYLVESTRE dit CHAMPAGNE, and there are 6 such CHAMPAGNES listed by DIT only. Three have been confirmed as Jacques BERTE(Contrecoeur), Christophe LAURENT(Chambly), and Pierre HANDGRAVE(Des Portes). The OTHERS are from the Berthier, La Noraye, and La Tour companies.

Nicolas is listed as a SOLDAT, or soldier. Is HE one of the Champagnes, and if he is, which one? If ANYONE knows, PLEASE confirm which company he is in. Thanks!!!
