My grandfather, Nary (Neree), was born in 1892 in St. Raphael; his father, Thomas, was born in 1861; his grandfather was Louis; his great-grandfather was Andre. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Looking for info about my family, and possible links to Mathurin Chabot (1661?). Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ariane,
I could not say why Lemaitre changed for Duhaime.
I know that the Lemaitre anscestors in Quebec were
Antoine and Francois Lemaitre in 1654. They were
brothers. Francois Lemaitre was killed in 1666.
I have been told that Lemaître, Lemaistre or Le Maistre
became Duhême or Duhaime because there was too
many Lemaitre at that time, so they would present
themselves saying, ex: Francois Lemaitre dit
Duhaime. That would be the only reason I know.

Also, I have two ancestor's names in Chabot's
family from Poitou.

1- Mathurin Chabot, son of Jean and Jeanne Rodé
from St-Hilaire-de-Riez, diocèse de Luçon, Poitou
got married with Marie Mésangé, Qc November 1661

2-Michel Chabot Lamarre, son of Jean and Louise
Robin from Luçon, Poitou got married twice in 1686
M.-Madeleine Le Gardeur, Duquet Notary Contract
in 1703, Madeleine Charon, Grenaple Notary Contract

Mathurin and Michel looked like brothers, same father
not the same mother.

This is all I know.

Hope it will help you.
