Hi Rebecca,

I just read your message of Sept. 1, 2003, and then the messages of Feb. 8th and 9th. I am surprised and excited, because until today I'd been totally unaware of any BC connection. I am sure there is one. I get my email at work, so I'll get more facts at home this evening. I am sure there is a connection, because Pietragalla is a very small place.

My grandmother was a Maria Ceraldi from Pietragalla. who married Teodosio DeNicola. My mother Maria Saveria DeNicola, born in 1907, was their first child. My grandmother and mother immigrated with Teodosio to Gary, Indiana, in 1910. The middle name can be anglicized to the name Xavieria.

My mother was named after Teodosio's mother as was the custom (I don't know whether it was a local or a national tradition).

My grandmother died of tuberculosis in 1920. I still have a letter that was sent to my mother's home after 1920 from relatives of Maria Ceraldi who had emigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Did any of your family go there?

Also, there is a connection between the DeNicola family and the D'Amico family of Welland, Ontario.

More later. Marilyn Sowers

Hi Marilyn: There is definitely a connection with the BC Ceraldi's and Pietragalla. I'm going out on a limb but I'm betting that your grandmother Maria and my grandfather Guiseppe might have been brother and sister. Or perhaps first cousins. My grandfather was born in Pietragalla in the late 1800s. Some of his siblings went to NY, some to Buenes Aires and he came to Canada.
I've been to Pietragalla myself a few years ago and visiting my grandfather's nephew Donato Ceraldi.
Very interesting to find relatives as there are so few of us in North America.

Hi Anna,
It was good to get your message. As small as Pietragalla is there must be a family connection. I agree your grandfather and my grandmother could easily have been cousins, if not brother and sister. I have checked what family records I have. I have Maria Ceraldi's father as Michele. (That would be my great-grandfather) and his wife as Maria, but no surname. Do you have your great grandfather's name? I also have a couple of letters that were sent from Buenos Aires one in English and one in Italian. The return address is Garay 3924, Buenos Aires. The signature is Mary and Car(we can't read the rest) Vertore or maybe Vertone. The letter is dated May 3, 1927. They speak of the upcoming marriage of their second daughter , Mary'. They also speak about an uncle who returned to Argentina to his wife and two sons, and that there is family discord. Does any of this sound familiar to you ? Looking forward to hearing from you again. The idea of
North American Ceraldi connections is really exciting. We had no idea. I also have had the opportunity to visit Pietragalla, and would really like to return. Marilyn Sowers

Marilyn: Nice to hear from you. I will have to look into the questions you asked but I know some Vertone's here. Small world. I'm from Vancouver. Where do you live? I won't have time to look into this further until the end of the summer. I'm on holidays and off to Italy this weekend. Look forward to hearing back from you. Anna
