Thanks for your reply. It all gets very confusing! I will be seeing a cousin on Christmas eve, who would know more about my grandmothers relatives..I will try to find out what her Dad, Mom and Grandfather and Grandmothers names were (Angela's) I know that Pietragalla is a small city, so it would seem like all the Grippo's born there would be related...

It seems to get so confusing because there are so many who named their children with the same first names in Italy...I think the only way to clear it up would be to write to the place of records for Pietragalla, and try to get the birth records. I keep finding ceraldis' that came from pietragalla, but none of them seem to be the ones I am searching for!

Surnames: Grippo, Colaninno
My grandfather was Gregorio Grippo. I never knew him, as he died before I was born in 1953. He was my mother's father and was married to Raffaela Colaninno (maiden name). He also had 4 other daughters. He was 45 when my mother was born in 1917, according to her birth certificate. The family lived in Jersey City, NJ, where I grew up. I've lived in Houston, TX since 1982.

If anyone can give me some information to track down information about him, I would appreciate it. I've only been doing genealogical research for the last year and a half and haven't been able to find anything about my grandparents in the 1920 Census or passenger ship lists. My mother died in 1999, so I never got any information from her.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your reply...I have put my search on a temporary hold for now..I keep running into dead ends, and it gets very confusing to try to sort out all the names that come up. It is interesting that one of your relatives lived in Schenectady...that is where my cousins lived also..Mary Grippo who married Dan Statuto (since both deceased) have a daughter, MaryAnn, who lives there still. I will have to ask her if there is any relation to your Salvatore, but I don't remember them talking about a Salvatore who lived near by. I have found that there are so many re-uses of names in the Italian culture that it gets hard to keep track of the families, but I would think that they HAVE to be al least distantly related?!? My Grandmother, Angela wrote often to her brother who stayed in Italy..his name was Canio. Her husbands name was Salvatore Ceraldi...they also had relatives in the Vermont area. I think that I will one day have to write to the Province that their town was in to get a birth record of the family, then maybe I can clear this all up. It gets hard when most of the relatives that would know anything are gone. Good luck with your search...Do you know what the town was that your relatives lived in in Italy? I'm pretty sure that the Grippo's in my side of the family also came from Pietragalla.
