Are all Cephases related???

It seems that a lot of Cephases are from the
VA/MD/DE area. I am from Connecticut but my
grandfather was from that area also. I don't
know exactly where. His name was Frank Cephas,
and all I know about him is that he was from
that area, he once was in the Navy, married a
woman named Mattie Carter, and they had seven
children---Francies, John, Katherine, Leigh,
Elijah, Patricia, Nellie. Nellie and Patricia
died young; all other died at or near age 70.
My father was Elijah, who died in 1996. Anyone
who thinks they may be related, please contact
me! Thanks!

It's doubtful, but it certainly is possible. I'm from Richmond, VA. There are very few Cephases here, sadly, none are related. My grandfather was Winston Cephas, who had two children Floyd Winston Cephas (my father) and Ruth Cephas. Ruth's son, Floyd E. Booker moved somewhere in New Jersey back in '57 or '58. I've never met any other Cephases to whom I am related. If you and your family; or anyone thinks there is an even remote possibility they may be related to me, please, don't hesitate to get in touch with me. Looking forward to hearing from some other Cephases!! Thank you!

Hi Celeste!

I guess what I meant was that are we, like many Jacksons, Jeffersons, etc., all descendants of slaves who were owned by someone named Cephas?

But I'm curious about your grandfather. . .it's possible that he could have been my grandfather's brother. I grew up knowing virtually nothing about my grandfather except that he was from "down south" (I grew up in Connecticut). He died in April, 1967 and he was born in 1888. This is all I know about him and, of course, his name, which was Frank. Did your grandfather have a brother? Was your grandfather old enough to have a brother born in 1888?

Feel free to reply to me directly at cephas@ucla.edu.

Thanks!

Lesley

Hello James,

I've finally stopped crying. I'm so overwhelmed I just don't know what to say. It's so wonderful to have found you also. My brother is John Floyd and my son is Clifton D. Gaines Jr. I remember my aunt Ruth and vaguely remember my grandmother and grandfather...your great grandparents. I spoke with your father sometime between '85 and '87. I have a Christmas card I received from him. I remember Bercenia, I beleive she was a few years younger than me. I don't know too much family history. I'll share what little I do know. I was very young when your father moved to New Jersey. I'm very anxious to hear from you and your brother. According to our local phone directory an F. E. Booker lives near me in Richmond. Your actualy e-mail address does not appear on this website. Please e-mail me at cgaines@jsr.cc.va.us. and I'll give you my phone number and address. Take care! Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks, Celeste.

Do you know in what year your grandfather was born? It is very likely that he could have been related to my grandfather, if your grandfather was born in the 1870s or 1880s.

My grandmother's mother maiden name was Cephas, I'm not sure were she was originally from, but my grandmother's family moved from Kentucky to Indiana, so that their interracial marriage could work.
