Re: josef cejka and anna vacek
Gary, who are Josef's siblings? You may already know this, but Cejka is a common name 'back home' and there are only a certain number of given names that can be used -- which is why every generation has Frank, Josef, Anna, Marie(a), Emma, Vaclav (Charles), etc.
Please see other messages on this board regarding possible connections. Frank Cejka is my great-uncle, you'll see a few messages from him. Cheryl has a lot of info, too. Let us know if we can help!

Re: josef cejka and anna vacek
delphia, thanks for the reply. josef and anna (vacek) cejka arrived at the port of new york on june 16, 1890, aboard the steamship POLYNESIA. they probably came through the Bare Office since ellis was not opened yet and castle gardens had been shut down. the went west to nebraska were they settled for two years. i can only assume they had relatives there, since i can find other cejkas there at the time, however, i have not been able to make any connections. the story is their crops were eaten up by locust so they moved south to texas, settling in and around the Weimar and Hallettsville area. they had eight children; joseph, john,. frank, robert (jaroslav), anna, adolph, fred (bedrich) and martha. my research at the catholic church in weimar points to original villages in czech as chlum and zbur. but i have run in to a deadend trying to locate them. no zbur and i am told there were at least 30 chlums in czech at the time. this is my current focus....to find the village of origin. any ideas? i am also interested in your comment that "only certain names could be used". i certainly notice a lot of the given names you mentioned, but why? i have a lot more info and photos to share and look forward to hearing from you are others. gary

Re: josef cejka and anna vacek
Gary, I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to reply... My great-grandfather Oldrich had a brother named Charles, who settled in Nebraska. There is a Prague, Nebraska, did you know that? I will ask my friend in CZ about those two towns, he has done a lot of genealogical research and may have references that list them. As far as only using certain names, my friend in CZ told me that. He said that there are about 400 names to choose from. I imagine that tradition has relaxed since the time of our grandparents and their parents, but if you look at the names in each generation you will find the same names over and over again. Oldrich had a sister, Bess (Bozena), who married a Dvorak and settled in Minnesota. I believe there were 8 children in his family. I am moving to a new apartment at the end of this month, so a lot of my stuff is packed up. I hope to be able to give you more information soon! Delphia

Re: josef cejka and anna vacek
My Czech line is very difficult to find any information for, I have hit a wall unfortunately. I have a friend who will be living in Prague beginning later this year, I might be able to get her to go look for records once she gets settled.
If you send me your email address, I can invite you to view my tree and you can see what I -do- have.
