Can anyone tell me the meaning of the surname CEJKA? I have been searching for 2 years without any luck. Also, I would like to know the nationality of the name. I have conflicting evidence suggesting that it could be Czech, Russian or Polish. I appreciate any help.

I am also researching the cejka surname and have located naturalization papers that say a cejka is from Taus/domazlice in the former Sudetenland or Bohemia. Ay help you can give would be appreciated

erika, the name cejka is of czech origin. my research indicates it's birthplace was the village of chlum and that appears to be where my great grandparents came from in the 1880 to settle in texas. the name means "bluebird".

To Gary,
I received your message and thank you. I have traced my family back to Taus. I am not able to go back any farther than 1845. I need to be able to access church records but am stuck as to how to proceed. Any advice?

My grandfather, Charles (from Karl or Carl) Cejka emigrated from what was Czechoslovakia and eventually settled in Nebraska. One year, possibly in the 1950's, he was chosen as "Father of the Year", but I don't remember if it was local or for all of Nebraska. He and his wife (I don't know her name) had 13 children--my father, James Edward Cejka, being one of them. If there are any close relatives, I would appreciate hearing from you.

dennis, nice to hear from you. my great grandfather josef cejka came from chlum, czechoslovakia to the u.s. in 1890. along with his wife anna and four children. they originally settled in nebraska and were eaten out by locust. they then moved the family to texas, settling in a small community, sublime outside of hallettesvile, texas. hallettesville, texas is just about half way between houston and san antonio. eventually they had a total of eight children. i have been tracing the family for some twenty years now. I have someone from each of thier children helping me. we have a reunion each june in weimar, texas. although i have tracked them back to their arrival and the port and ship, i have not yet been able to locate their original village in czechoslovakia. i have soemone their who is helping...but it seems at that time there were 25 villages in czech named "chlum". we have other cejkas that are not descendants of josef and anna who attend the reunion. we are sure if we can find their original village we will be able to connect them. we would enjoy sharing any information we have with you and knowing if you have any information on any locations in czech were a cejka may have come from. althoug we own a farm in texas and have four grown children there we now live in baltimore. we go home about every two months an always spend some time chasing our roots. by the way, i am sure you must a have the same problem we do with others trying to pronounce cejka. in our family it was always "shaka" until someone started saying "checka". how do you pronounce it? look forward to talking with you. gary

We pronounce it, "chaku (ch, long a-as in age, k, short u-as in umbrella)"
My email address is denniscejka27549@hotmail.comI don't know if you have heard about my grandmother who had 13 children, then hung herself in the barn? My grandfather, Charles (Carl, Karl) was a "cobbler" in Czech prior to emigrating to America. Dennis Cejka

dennis, i think you have it correct. i ran in to a hotel receptionist from czech training in this country and she pronounced it the same way. were in czech is your family from. maybe it will help me find my grandparents home village. by the way. my greatgrandfather was kicked by a mule and died and my great grand mother died when lightening struck the iron bed she was kneeling beside to say her prayers. gary

My greatgrandmother was Hellen Cejka, daughter of Frank Cejka and Anna Naritook(sp?). She married Matej Nerad in LaPlatte, Nebraska, in 1871. I believe the family was here a littler earlier than that. They were from Bohemia. Any chance there is a connection to your family? Donna
