Hi,
My name is Jo Ann Ahles and I started this tread in 1999 when I was looking into my grandfather's history. Recently after a family member passed away, I realized that she had the album that I had created from the research.
After re-reading the posts here, I see that many of you are from the Nebraska area. I am from the Wisconsin area and have a branch of the family in California.
We have always pronounced our name: Jay-key. Does anyone know how this pronounciation came about? My greatgrandfather was a stow away so it didn't start with Ellis Island.
Any thoughts?

Jaroslav,
I have finally located my great grandparents home villages in Czech republic, thanks to a wonderful researcher out of Praha. The villages are just northeast of Hlinsko. Now that I know where they are I can plan my trip to your country.

Greg,
Haven't heard from you in awhile. Thought I would update you a little. I hired a researcher in the Czech republic to run down the villages of origin of my great grandparents. She was able to locate them in Eastern Bohemia. Along with the village information she found 7 generations of Cejkas. What will be interesting to you is that the Bures names shows up as godparents a couple of times in older generations. So my belief is that the connection of Bures and Cejkas runs deep, in Czech Republic as it did here between the two families. If you have interest in having the researcher do some work for you, let me know. gary cejka@satx.rr.com

I have just received a complete packet of information on my Cejka line from eastern Bohemia, completed by a researcher I hired from Prague. She did an outstanding job. The correct pronunciation of the name is "Chey kah". It means bird, lapwing (Vanellus vanellus). You can look up the bird on Google images.

Howdy Gary! I'm very sorry I haven't responded back to you until some fourteen years after your post. I don't often use Ancestry.com. We pronounce Cejka as "ch-as in chair-"a"-as in age-"k"- as in kangaroo-"u"-as in umbrella; some in the family use a "short e" sound-as in egg, rather than a "long a" sound-as in age.

Again, I don't know if you'll be viewing this message any time soon, as I didn't either, but I apologize for not responding to you in a reasonably timely manner.

Judy - I just went down to the Cemetery in Holly TX last weekend with my mom. Anna Cejka is her grandmother. Anna Kubelka was married to Friedrich (Fred) Kubelka in Chicago IL. They had 3 children Ann, Rose & Fred (died @ 18 months old (1912)). At some point, they moved to Lovelady, Texas. Based on stories my mom was told, Anna and Ilois both died of yellow fever. Anna was pregnant at the time (Doctor gave her quinine which terminated pregnancy). My mom was told a relative (thought to be an uncle) came to visit and also died (Ilois?). Fred ended up moving back to Chicago with my Ann & Rose and died a few years later. Ann & Rose were placed in an orphanage.

After much research, I believe Ilois (also spelled Eloise or Alois) is actually Anna father. I discovered a passenger manifest (Alois Kubalka) with an Anna listed as a wife & children Aloisie, Rosa, Karolina (which my mother remembers her mother and Aunt talking about).
I know that "Aunt Rosa" was a nurse & never married. She died from complications from surgery. From this information, I was able to find a death certification for Rosa that listed Alois Kubelka as father and a Marie Marek as mother. (on passenger manifest, Alois & family were going to stay with Brother-in-law Tomas Marek).
"Aunt Louise" married Frank Soukup (spellings vary - Lvukup) and had 2 boys (Frank & Louis).
"Aunt Carrie" married Stepan Chalabala (Halabala) and had two sons. Carrie hung herself in 1929
There was mention of a 5th daughter for Alois & Marie (Anna) but my mom can't remember the name.
In other documentation, I have found Alois and Anna (still showing married) so this leads me to believe that Marie Marek might be Anna Marie or Marie Anna...
still working on the Cejka/Kubelka line (this has been my brick wall for a few years)

PS - I have always pronounced it CHAY-ka, while my mom was down visiting and helping me with research, she pronounced it SAY-ka
