I am interested in the Cehand name. When did it change and why? Also ,how did William C Cehand and Bill Armfield become one? I am interested in his first wife Mary A Privett. She is a relative, I think.

William C. (Armfield) Cehand/Seahan - and also Cehan, Cehen, Sehen, and maybe more. Called himself Armfield sometimes, maybe because his father was also called William/Bill. We know they are the same person mainly because the children's names match (his -I think- fourth wife, Sarah Angeline Davidson was the mother of most of his children and the Davidsons have a lot of research). William C. and his brother James E. seem to have agreed on the spelling Cehand, which is what the family uses today, sometime between 1880 and 1890. We don't really know why. We aren't even sure of the original family name, but we think maybe Seahan because the name seems to have always been pronounced that way, though earlier relatives who couldn't read or write used it and other variations. Seahan is a legitimate Irish name, though, and there is a mountain in County Wicklow, Ireland called Seahan.

Mary Privitt was Williams first wife. You may already have the info that follows but if not, I hope it helps:

1 William C. [Calvin or Colvin] [Armfield] Cehand b: 19 FEB 1852 d: 17 JUN 1926
+ Mary A Privitt
2 Louisa Cehand b: 1876 d: 1888
2 Minnie Lea Cehand b: 8 OCT 1877
+ Isaace Simmons
+ Alexander Walker
2 Infant son Cehand b: 1880 d: 1880
2 John Calvin Cehand b: 1881

Good luck and happy hunting!
:-)

Thanks Kathryn,
Do you know if William had a sister named Martha Sara Ann Cehand? I have so many conflicking reports about the Privetts and the Cehands . Supposely Hugh(Houston -Mac) Privett was Mary Privetts brother. He married Martha Cehand in 1882 in Williamson Co. TX. I have tried to link Martha and William , but no luck as yet. Maybe with this information ,I can find more.

Lillie, this is getting deep! I have a book called 'Williamson County Texas Marriage Records 1860-1884" (one of three I stumbled upon by dumb luck). It lists "Houston Prewett"marrying "Martha Sehan" on 2/13/1882. To the best of my knowledge William did not have a sister. I can tell you that William Cehand's (pick a spelling) second wife was Martha Jane "Mattie" Rumbo who was married to somebody named Joe Allen before she married William Cehand. I don't know what happened to that marriage but William had two more wives after that. The Cehands are a colorful (to say the least) family. :-) It's possible that these people all knew each other and Martha hooked up with Mary's brother. Strictly a guess on my part, of course. Martha's children with Joe Allen were named Luther and Monroe Allen, if that helps you. I'm thinking I have a copy of a census that shows this same "Mattie" with a subsequent husband but I don't think it was Privett. I just did a quick look and didn't find it but I'll go through my files if you think this might be the right woman. By the way, you can write me at my "real" email address if you prefer: kcehand@voyager.net.

Lillie, I just found the other marriage record for Martha "Mattie" Seahan. She married Ed Johns in Williamson County, TX on 4/01/1887. So I don't know about Martha Sarah Sehan. If you search on Ancestry.com for Sehan, though, there are people in TX who still spell their name that way. I don't think they're related to us, but maybe to you. Good luck.

Lillie, I am so sorry I gave you some incorrect information. William Cehand did have a sister, in fact two sisters. We just recently "found" them in the 1880 San Saba County, TX census. There is a sister listed as "S. Martha" who was 14 in 1880 so she could have married Mr Privitt/Prewett when she was 16 - people married young all all the time, as you know. There was also an older sister, C. Lydia who was either 17 or 19 (hard to make out) in 1880.

So with William's ex-wife, we do have two Martha Cehands. Don't you love it?
:-)

Hi Becci, your great-grandfather was the brother of my husband's great-grandfather. The Davidson family website has a ton of information for Sarah Angeline's side of the family. I have been unable to find much about William Armfield Cehand's birth or where that 'Armfield' in his name came from. I have a copy of his death certificate, which says his father's name was "Jim", though I believe it was actually William. I know that the family moved to Texas around 1863 from North Carolina but I haven't pinned down where exactly William and his brother James were born. Do you have family pictures or maybe a bible with some information? We are acquainted with a great-grandson of Paul Cehand, who was a son of William and Sarah. We have 'met' quite a few relatives through genealogy and it's great fun to hear from you. If there is anything specific you are looking for, let me know. I have mostly census records but I'll be happy to share what I have.

Thank you so much for your prompt response. My great -grandfather seems to be a man of mystery as we have not been able to find much on him and my grandfather and most of his siblings knew very little except he was a hard man. They all loved their mother very much but she died when my grandfather was very young. All the children were then farmed out to other families and they never heard from their father again. I have ran into brick walls everywhere I look but I am so new to the genealogy search that I may just not know where or how to look for the information I need. I was just so excited to see his name - well - I am afraid I have been bitten by the bug now and can not rest until I find out who this man was. Feel free to e-mail me anytime. I have a few people I could ask more questions of but I amwaiting for responses from them. Thank you. So we are related then?? LOL!
