Re: Cehand (Seahan) 1880 Texas Census
I have that census too. I have seen many spellings of the family name. "Seahan" is just what the census enumerator wrote down. I wouldn't assume that is the original family name. The most common spelling is Cehen, and that spelling is still used in NC. James E. and William C. had another brother, John Calvin Cehen who did not go to Texas with the rest of the family. He fathered three families of children whose descendants live in NC and VA. Some of them are Cehen and some are Sehen, probably also thanks to a census ennumerator. William Cehen (I think it's the son) was apparently illerate, as were most people back then. I have a copy of a land grant to him where he signed with an "X".

Oh, yes... I have that one. William Warwick living with James and his family is Mary's brother. I have a book of Williamson County marriages that shows Martha (I think her full name was Sarah Martha) marrying a man named Privet. I have a lot of documentation I've collected over the last 10 years or so. I'll be happy to share what I have. I also have put together a summary narrative of the family history (before we found out about Daniel Shehan) if you're interested in that I can email it to you.

Re: Cehand (Seahan) 1880 Texas Census
Thanks for your information. My mothers surname was Ayers but her G Grandfather's surname was Ayres. I suspect a census taker wrote Ayers and it stuck. My Grandfather used the Ayers surname (William Allen Ayers). It makes everything a challenge. I have found it spelled Ayres Ayers Airs and others.

Re: Cehand (Seahan) 1880 Texas Census
I've really had fun with my mother's side of the family. Her father was Russian and when he came to this country he was 17, all alone, and spoke no English. I've seen all kinds of butchering of his name. Apparently nobody could understand a word he said! :-)

Are you anywhere near Austin? Here is the description of William Cehen's land, acquired by homesteading in 1875:
160 acres of land “on the north side of the Colorado River about 24 ½ miles N, 51º W from the city of Austin.”
He sold the land for $150 three years later.

What if any information do you have on Minnie Lea Cehand? I believe she married a Simmons and had my grand mother Lillian Simmons.
