POLAND, OH – A Panachida service will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church for Dan Cebula, 96, formerly of Campbell, Ohio, who passed away at AustinWoods on Jan. 9, 2015.
Dan was an unselfish man of simple pleasures who loved his family.

He was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Campbell, Ohio, the son of the late John and Mary Lisko Cebula. A lifelong resident of Campbell, Ohio, he graduated from Campbell Memorial High School.

Dan attended Montana State University, while in the Air Force and went on to fight in World War II as a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service, after 35 years of service.
Dan was a lifelong member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church.
He was always there with a helping hand.
Dan also volunteered at Byzantine Catholic Central School, working bingo and driving the school bus. He participated in many sports, including basketball and baseball
. Dan was an avid bowler, with several 300 games.
He loved golf and had a hole in one.


He didn’t miss one home football game of the Campbell Memorial Red Devils in more than 30 years. You could always find him standing at the wall.
Dan was also a great fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He was a member of many organizations throughout his life, including St. Michael’s Civic Club, VFW 7538, GCU, and the Campbell Golf League.
Dan’s wife, the former Helen Varkonyi, whom he married June 7, 1947, passed away April 7, 1993.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a son, Jim (Nancy) Cebula; a daughter, Patricia (Jeffery) Gomori; two grandchildren, Nathan (Valerie) and Nicole (Alexander) Bowling; and one great-grandchild, Ansley Marie Bowling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; five sisters, Mary Galida, Anna Kolesar, Catherine Cioffi, Helen Backus and Veronica Cebula; and four brothers, John, Pete, Joe and George. The Cebula family would like to give a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Woodlands Assisted Living, where Dan lived for the past 3 1/2 years.
Also, extreme gratitude to the entire staff of both Hospice of the Valley and AustinWoods for the constant care and compassion they showed Dan and his family.
The Cebula family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell and will receive family and friends on Monday evening from 4 to 7 p.m., where there will be a Parastas at 3:30 p.m.

The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3695 Boardman-Canfield Road, Canfield, OH 44406, or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512
