Does anyone have any information on the following Sease/Cease family? This is all I have but would love to have any information that you have. I do have a few pictures. Daniel Andrew Sease was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was born in July 25, 1849. Although his death certificate shows he was born in Richmond, Pennsylvania. His death certificate shows his parents as Stephen Sease and Alzada Woodard. I cannot find him on any census record prior to 1870. Who did he live with? His mother had remarried to Henry Buck and is listed on the 1860 census, without Daniel but his older sister Mary is living with them.
Daniel enlisted and served in Company “A” 2nd Pennsylvania Calvary Division known also as the 2nd Brig. Army of the Potomac. He enlisted in Mansfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania on March 31, 1864 as a Private. His military records show he was 17 years, 8 months when he enlisted. His physical description said he was 5’2” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
After the war Daniel met and married Rose Ann Cooley. She was the daughter of Jonas Cooley Jr. and Elizabeth (Eliza) La Point. Jonas was the son of Hezekiah Cooley and Theeda Hagar. Daniel and Rose were married in Charleston, Pennsylvania on August 9, 1876. They were married at the M.E. Parsonage in East Charleston, Pennsylvania by Reverend G. Howland, Pastor of the M. E. Church. Daniel and Rose both lived in Richmond, Pennsylvania at the time they were married. Daniel and Rose had the following children:
Florello A. Sease born April 19, 1878 (died by 1925 per Rose’s widow pension application)
John Clyde Sease born February 14, 1880 per the pension application information. He went by the name of Clyde. His death certificate said he was born February 14, 1879 and he died in Corning, New York September 17, 1929. Clyde’s obituary was in the Evening Leader newspaper of Corning, New York on Wednesday September 18, 1929.
Obituary of Clyde Sease Clyde Sease died at 7:30 Tuesday evening, September 17, 1929 at Corning Hospital. Mr. Sease was taken suddenly ill while working on the New World War Memorial Library last Thursday and was taken to the hospital where he underwent an emergency operation. The son of Daniel and Rose Ann (Cooley) Sease, he was born February 14, 1879 at Roseville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He had spent the greater part of his life here and in Ohio. While employed here Mr. Sease had been making his home with his brothers and sisters in Corning. His wife, Mrs. Laura Barber Sease, of Toledo, Ohio, survives him. He leaves a daughter Leona Sease and a son Jesse Sease both of Toledo, Ohio. His mother Mrs. Rose Sease, of east fourth street, this city; five sisters, Mrs. Walter Bixby of east Market Street, Mrs. Frank Barber of 304 Baker Street, Mrs. Leroy Stanford of six street, Mrs. Rose Easton of Gibson, Mrs. Floyd Bennett of east fourth street; three brothers, Frank and William Sease of Steubenville, Ohio and Verl Sease of Corning R. D. 2. The body has been removed to the Irene S. Phillips Funeral Home, 17 west Pulleny Street. The funeral arrangements are still incomplete. Below is the obituary of Mathew Barber. He was the father of Clyde’s wife, Lura Cease. MATTHEW BARBER MANSFIELD, Pa., Route 1, Nov. 6--Matthew Barber died at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. Wednesday night at 5:50 o'clock following an illness of several months, the last three months being in the hospital. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Hosea of Elliotsville, N.Y.; Samuel of Pitcairn, Pa.; Mrs. Riley Cummings of Tioga; Mrs. Emmett Cummings of Corning, N.Y.; Mrs. Lura Cease of Little Genesee; Mrs. Hazel Root of Mansfield, Pa.; Mrs. Margaret Heater of Elmira, N.Y.; and one step-son George Cloflen of Mansfield and a number of grandchildren. Mr. Barber was 76 years old and a life long resident of Tioga County. The funeral will be held from the Baptist Church in Tioga Saturday morning at 10 o'clock with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, the Rev. Orey Crippen officiating. SJOBLOM, 59, of Troy RD 1, died Sept. 22, 1986, at the Arnot-Ogden Memorial Hospital, Elmira, N.Y. Mrs. Sjoblom was born Dec. 1, 1926 at Troy, the daughter of Frank and Bessie Smith Dunbar. She retired in 1981 as a machine operator employed by the former Canford Manufacturing, Canton. She also was a member of the E. Troy Baptist Church and the Canton Lodge of the Women of The Moose No. 429. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Connie Bryington, Williamsport, Mrs. Linda Hicks, Alba, and Mrs. Lisa Rorabaugh, Conemaugh, PA; two sons, Sgt. Roger Overrein, stationed in Korea and James Overrein of Troy; seven sisters, Mrs. Nellie Parmenter, LaPlata, MD, Mrs. Mae Teribury, Mrs. Laura Cease, Mrs. Gertrude Greenough and Mrs. Marjorie Goodrich, all of Troy, Mrs. Hazel Harkness, Gillett and Mrs. Helen Campbell, Big Pond; one brother, Frank Dunbar, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Sjoblom was predeceased by a daughter and her only grandson, Mary Lou Parker and David James Parker on April 18, 1981. The funeral service was held Wednesday from the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home Canton, with the Rev. Garry Zuber, her pastor, officiating. 3. Mabel B. Sease born September 18, 1882 married Walter Bixby. Mabel also was the informant on her father’s death certificate.
Bertha A. Sease born August 12, 1884 married Frank Barber.
5. Mary A. Sease was born November 21, 1886. She married Leroy Stanford in 1899 in Lindley, Stueben County, New York. Leroy Stanford was born in 1876 in Mansfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Oscar Stanford and Ella Upham. Oscar was an immigrant from England (Leroy was the brother of Margaret Stanford who married Frank Cooley. Their daughter Ella Marie Cooley married Mary Sease’s brother, William Mathew Sease).
6. Rosa E. Sease born January 6, 1890 married Mr. Easton.
7. Franklin D. Sease born October 23, 1894 (known as Frank) my father said that Frank wanted to marry a second time after his divorce. Because his second wife was catholic and couldn’t marry a man previously married, he changed the spelling of his name to Cease and claimed he was never married before. Mansfield Advertiser, 19 July 1961, p.7 CEASE – Frank Cease, 66, of 7 Pratt St., Mayville, died Monday, July 3, 1961, at the Veterans Hospital in Buffalo. He was a retired linoleum cutter at the Art Metal Construction Co. in Jamestown. He was born Oct. 23, 1894, in Mansfield, PA, a son of Daniel and Rose Cooley Cease. He was married Oct. 11, 1942 to the former, Margaret Hitchcock, who survives. He had been a resident of Mayville for 25 years. He was a member of the Westfield VFW Post and a veteran of World War I. Survivors also include a sister, Mrs. Bertha Barber of Corning; a brother, William Cease of Canton, Ohio; and one nephew, Frank Barber of Painted Post. Funeral service was held at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville. Burial was in Mayville Cemetery.
8. Flora F. Sease born August 29, 1896 (known as Flossie) married Floyd Bennett.
9. William Mathew Sease born July 16, 1898 in Marshland, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Ella Marie Cooley, daughter of Frank Cooley and Margaret Stanford. She was born February 14, 1908 in Pennsylvania and died on February 6, 1942 at 707 Fifth Street N.E., Stark County, Ohio. They had Children: Glenn Jay Sease, William Byron Sease, Clifford Sease and Sandra Jean Sease. In December of 1936 he worked at The Canton Malleable Iron Company in Strasburg, Ohio, according to his social security application. 10. Verle L. Sease born June 23, 1903 (sometimes spelled Verle) His sons were Robert and Tony and lived in Corning and Elmira New York. Daniel Andrew Cease/Sease filed for a disability pension in Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1892. He resided in the Borough of Mansfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was 43 years old.
Cease: Daniel A. Cease died Friday at Corning after an extended illness. He was the father of Vearl Cease of Elmira, New York and half brother of Mrs. Judson Mosher of Elmira. The funeral was held at Riverside Corning Sunday.
Rose filed for her widows pension a few days after the death of Daniel. She was granted her pension and received it until her death. Rose A. Sease died in Painted Post, New York on September 12, 1931. Listed on her death certificate was her father was Jonas Cooley and mother Elizabeth Point.
Obituary for Rose: Mrs. Rose Anna Sease Mrs. Rose Anna Sease, of this city, died at home of her daughter, Mrs. Floyd Bennett of Erwin, Saturday afternoon at 2:40 O’clock following a period of ill health, which had extended over the past four years. Mrs. Sease was born in Canada, February 2, 1862, the daughter of Jonas and Elizabeth LaPoint Cooley. She moved to Corning with her parents when she was two years of age.
On August 9, 1876, she was married in East Charleston, Pennsylvania to Daniel A. Sease, who died in 1925. The major portion of her married life was spent in and around Genesee, Pennsylvania. Sixteen years ago she came to Corning and has resided here ever since.
Mrs. Sease was a member of the Pentecostal Church and when her health permitted was a faithful worker in that church. She is survived by five daughters; Mrs. Walter Bixby, of 209 Oak Street, Mrs. Frank Barber, Town of Catlin; Mrs. Leroy Stanford of Addison; Mrs. Rose Easton of Gibson; Mrs. Floyd Bennett of Erwins; three sons Frank of Lindley, Will of Canton, Ohio, and Verle of Rochester, New York.; one sister Mrs. Flora Vance of Lambs Creek, Pennsylvania and one brother, Clarence Coley of Tioga, Pennsylvania.
The body has been taken to the Phillips Funeral Home where the funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 O’clock with the Reverend Walter Watkins, Pastor of the Pentecostal Mission, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Daniel died March 27, 1935 in Painted Post, Riverside, Stueben County, New York. His death certificate gives his father as Stephen Sease and his mother as Alzada Woodard. He was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Painted Post, New York.
