I am researching a John CEARS, who was born in Anne Arundel Co., MD around 1763. His marriage license gave the name as KER, and the Bible of his son, my great grandfather, Thomas Reed KEAR, gave the name as Thomas Cears. Van Wert County, Ohio, gives John's name as John Cears Kear. A Licking County probate record gives his name as John Kear.

Out of the blue today, I suddenly remembered a story my grandmother had told me once, long ago. I decided to type the name Cears on the Google search engine to see what came up and I found your web site.
It may be of interest to you to know some of the following "facts" that were related to me long ago by my grandmother.
My name is Michael R. Sears. I am an inventor and master HVAC contractor in the state of Texas. I am 53 years of age. I recall my grandmother telling me of a story that my great great grandfather came to the Texas / Louisiana area and was on the run from something and changed his name from Cears to Sears. There may be a linkage there somewhere. I do not know. Anyway, I thought you might be interested.

Micheal, I'm embarasssed at having forgotten about establishing this board and just stumbling on it now, 3 years late. If you are still out there, I hope to establish contact with you.
I have copies of early 1900 letters between a great uncle and a Thomas Sears. Thomas thought his Sears family was originally Cears. Perhaps there is some connection.

Hello. Thanks for your reply. What do the letters say? Any references to Cears. Any photos. Thanks, Mike Sears

The one-page letter from Thomas Sears to Wiley Kear merely stated that he thought his family's name was originally Cears. Wiley's reply is posted at http://johnkear.fortunecity.net/wiley/wiley0401a.html. I probably should also post the Thomas Sears letter that I found at the Maryland Historical Society.

BTW, I found this board the same way you did, by searching on Google for cears.
