Amanda Sefton, if you're out there: I ran across a record that shows Lieut. Colonel J. T. Cearnal "Assigned to duty as Provost Marshal at Centre Point, Ark. G.O.? [can't read] 12. District of Ark. - Magruder."

I think this is the latest record I've seen of him. Apparently there is an extensive obituary of his widow Mary in the Dade County (Mo.) Advocate in late October 1914 (following a shorter notice of her death the week before), but I don't have access to that paper. Do you have a copy?

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you....I have moved from Arkansas to Greenfield, IN to be nearer to my children. I have see that but have not been able to verify. The latest record I can verify is from Nov. 1864 when he wrote a dispatch from near Ft. Towson. I would really love to know what happened to him. Did you ever get the stuff from Cole and Taney Cos. The info from Cole is from the MSS collection at the Historical Society of MO. and the info from Taney pertains to his father being a
postmaster for a very short while....will dig them out if you don't have them.

As to the Greenfield Vedette obit. I have lost it in my
travels but can get another from the newspaper archive n Columbia, MO. I will try to do that this week.

Karra - Hope this reaches you. I just found a possible lead on J.T. Cearnal. I found him on a roster of Co.K, First Cavalry, in 1855. He was recruited by Capt. John Coffee and enrolled at Greenfield and served to May 28, 1860 when he was discharged with rank of 1st Sgt. This would explain the gap in evidence for that time frame.

I have just about reconstructed all I lost to the computer virus but cannot find the citation for the reference to his time as Provost Marshal in Arkansas. If you still have this would you mind sharing it?

Hi, Amanda. If you send your current email address to my email, thaxtongenealogy@yahoo.com, we'll send you the new info we have: 1) reference to a 1/16/1865 appt as Provost Marshal in Ark., and 2) a short account by a troop member in 1901 that describes James and says he saw an announcement of his death. I'll also look to see if there are any Fort Riley records at the Family History Library here.
