Cearley, Kerley, Curley, etc..
My line has been spelled Cearley until I get to my gg-grandfather & he's been found spelled Kerley, Curley and Carley. The line is as follows:
grandfather Elias Andrew Cearley b. 8/5/1889 d. 8/27/1976 m. Jewell Eunice Flannery 3/4/1923
g-grand Robert Newton Cearley b. 9/17/1859 d. 5/19/1940 m. Rebecca Davis m. Catherine Coffman
gg-grand W.R. "John" Curley b. 1818 Alexander Co. N.C. m. Matilda Davis
Robert Newton & his family along with Matilda and the remaining children moved to Texas in 1888. I have info indicating W.R.'s father was William CURLEY b. 1786 in N.C. and was married to Drucilla ? b. 1802.
If anyone has any info to add or correct I would be interested in hearing from you.

Re: Cearley, Kerley, Curley, etc..
The only info I have on Matilda is she was born in 1830 in Alexander Co., N.C. and died Mar. 6, 1919 in Wise co., TX. She was the wife of W.R. "John" Curley b. 1818 Alexander Co., N.C. Haven't seen the 1890 census but sometime between 1880 and 1900 Matilda and most if not all of her 10 children moved to Texas.
Their son, Robert Newton married Rebecca Davis. According to his obit found in the Wise County Messenger they married in 1880 in Washington Co., Va. and moved to McKinney, Tx. in 1888 before moving to the Wise Co. community of Blewett where they lived for several years before Rebecca died in 1899.
There is a family story that Robert went into Kentucky to work in the coal mines before they moved to Texas. No indication why they chose Texas over Va. or Ky. or anywhere else for that matter!
Robert is my great grandfather. There were 7 children when Rebecca died. He remarried Catherine Coffman in 1903.
Some of this info was passed to me by a cousin (Catherine Coffman's granddaughter) who has done some pretty extensive research. I'm not exactly sure where she found it all!
Let me know if you have anything to add or if you have questions. I have more info on the rest of Robert's descendents.

Re: Cearley, Kerley, Curley, etc..
The origins of the Cearley family, who were in Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., NC before 1790, stem from the son William, Jr son of William and Mary Bowden Carley, b. 1717 at Marlborough, MA who married Martha Patty Carter abt. 1737. A William, Carley, Seaman, and is noted as follows:
WILLIAM the MARINER WHO TOOK A JOHN CARTER FROM LONDON AGAINST POPPLE ORDERS IN Boston April 12th 1722
Note subscribed by captain james stewart HMS .Winchester.to the bond of William carley master of the sloop popple of boston.I am very credibly informed that the above mentioned carley did carry away from hence, one john carter belonging to the four brothers, john squarry master, and then incurred the penalty of said bond.-------
Which adds credence to the conection of the Carley/Carter families along with the fact that a Rev. Samuel Carter purchased the farm of the deceased William Kerly, Sr at Lancaster, MA from that William's son, Capt. Henry Kerley.

Re: Cearley, Kerley, additional notes
William the Mariner, noted in the previous post, b. @ 1680 at Marlborough, son of Capt. Henry and second wife, Elizabeth Ward, widow of John Howe,II, Kerley. Willaim m. Mary Bowden, do John and Grace Bully Bowden of Black Point, Saco, ME on May 03, 1703 at Boston, MA who were the parents of the William, Jr Carley/Cearley, b @ 1717, who married Marth Patty Carter. William the Mariner also served on the "Province Galley", the first ship built in the Colonies for the defense of the Colonies as well as several other vessels out of the Port of Boston until his death in 1739.

Re: Cearley, Kerley, Curley, etc..
Hello!
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to you. I haven't had much time to spend on geneology the past year or so.
How many Elias Cearley's can there be?! It sounds like we are probably cousins. How are you connected?
I hope this gets to you since it's been so long since your post.

Re: Cearley, Kerley, Curley, etc..
In the history of the Bowden family - Mary Bowden being the wife of Mariner William, mother of William Cearley, there is a history of a marriage between the Bowden and Davis family which lays a groundwork for the Cearley-Davis connection in the NC family -- Mary's brother Nicholas is the Bowden who moved out of Maine abt 1700 and who can be found in VA by 1734 --

Re: Cearley, Kerley, Curley, etc..
I have run into the same thing. My grandfather was Forest Donald Cearley of Texas. Only it seems my entire life I have been lead to believe that my line of Cearleys came from Ireland. Yet somewhere it changes to Carley then to Kerley and winds up in England. Any new info on the name change?
