That Joseph Carlile, Sr. is definitely a candidate to be considered the long lost son of Capt. Henry and Elizabeth White Kerley -

This is an excerpt of a letter sent by Mark Lefler sometime last year regarding his research into the Carley/Curley history in CT --

"The BIG NEWS however is the deed I have discovered involving Joseph Curley in the year 1697 in what was the Pequannock section of Fairfield (later Bridgeport) This from a John Benet of the Coloney of Western New Jersey* (see note below on Benet and Pickering -- JJS) (location is in old english so I have to interpert) to Joseph Curley of Middletown, New England Connecticut for seven acres of land. (A long Lot is only a few rods wide but 7-8 acres of land) This Joseph Benet* was one of the ten first settlers of Pequannock now Bridgeport. Apparently Fairfield founded in 1639 had a smaller piece of old Bridgeport than Stratford also founded in 1639. Obviously, we have more questions to answer and routes to travel . "

In 1996, a gentleman by the name of George Carlisle of Sarasota, FL, sent information RE: the Carlile/Carlisle/Carlyle Family to the Old York Historical Society in York and stated that a family by the name of Bennet was still living in a home on Long Sands (Road?) in York that had belonged Rachel Prebble, which she and Joseph had lived in after their marriage in York on March 29, 1695. He did not have any history other than conjecture on the past of Joseph Carlile, Sr. which he believe to be Scottish. All of the known dates RE: this Joseph point toward his being born @ 1669, having emerged from a French/Scottish/English background - (note spelling of surname).

Our Joseph Kerley was said to have been killed during the Massacre at Lancaster in Feb. of 1676, however, since his mother had been buried by his father, Capt. Henry, without his father having recognized his wife's body, and since there is also a record by Mary White Rowlandson of that Massacre which states that an Unknown Kerley, child of Henry and Elizabeth, had been taken captive and held for ransom, and since she never relates to any children after the capture other than her own, it is most highly probable that Joseph did survive, was taken to Canada along with his brother, Henry Kerley, Jr., as were most of the surviving captives, and that he returned to York rather than Lancaster, which had been destroyed during that Massacre. Since his father had married his second wife, Elizabeth Ward, widow of John Howe, Jr. of Marlborough, (where they resided after the Massacres of Lancaster and Marlborough,) and Joseph was now "of age", there was probably no reason for him to return to Marlborough and he thus started a new life with Elizabeth Bean/Bane of York, who died within a few years of the marriage. His second wife was Rebecca Maine, widow of Stephen, who was the son of Abraham and Judith Tilden Prebble.

We have now found another tie-in to the John Carlile of York, son of Joseph Carlile who married Elizabeth Bean/Bane and Rebecca Maine/Preble. I have a copy of a bill of sale for property in York in 1727 transferring title of property between John Pickering and John Carlile and another transferring title of land from Thomas Pickering and wife Dorothy to the same John Carlile -- Thomas Pickering being the Captain of the Province Galley on which our Mariner William Carley served in 1709 as Bos'n, (possibly earlier and later). William married Mary Bowden/Boaden of Saco, ME, daughter of John and Grace Bully Bowden - they are named as the couple who settled the estate of John Bowden and sold his property in Saco in 1727.

There was another family in York at the same time by the name of CARLL/CARLE/ sometimes spelled KEARLL as stated in the History of Saco and Biddeford -- I found it spelled HEARLL in papers at York --- they are descended from a LT. Samuel Kerle b 1682 in Kittery, m. Patience Evans, Samuel was a son of a Timothy Kerle of Kittery - m Elizabeth (Hall?), Samuel was a son of a Richard, Jr and an Amy Wyeth, son of a Richard, b @ 1600 and Agness Babb who were married January 18, 1628, Walborough, Newton Abbot, Devon, England. --- (Devon being the adjoining Shire to Dorset.) Richard could well be, and most probably is, a brother of our William the Immigrant!!!

Children of Samuel, Sr. and Patience were -- Samuel Carle , Jr. b: 9 FEB 1709 in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire; Sarah Carle; Nathaniel Carle b: 1 NOV 1713 in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire; Anne Carle; Patience Carle b: 26 FEB 1717 in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire; Timothy Carle; Robert Carll (m. Rhoda Starbird @ 1755; Daniel Carle; Benjamin Carle; Simeon Carle; Mary Carle; Hannah Carle.

If anyone can add to the above information, we would be much appreciative -

In the 1700's there was a large segment of the population of what is now Maine, out of New England, into the Virginias and Carolinas -- many founding families whose roots cannot be found in these newer areas may possibly be found in Maine histories -- just a passing thought for all of us trying to connect -

Hello;
I just heard that there is a listing of a Carll or Carle in your queries would like to know if any part of the Carll or Carle family moved to New Jersey in the early 1700 or late 1600. I am looking for a Lowden or a David Carll they were both listed in the New Jersey Militia in Capt. Allen Company.

I'm sorry but the Carll/Carle's that I have in my listings seem to have remained in Maine, although I do know that there was a contingent of Carley's who did go into New Jersey --

I have an ancestor by the name of Josephy Kearley that supposedly came from South Carolina to Monroe County, Alabama. Never have seen anyone have any luck tracing the line back past him. Perhaps the information and thoughts you have will someday make it possible to pick up the trail again.

Appreciate your posts and help in someday making that "connection."

Steve - I just caught your message today -- sorry for the delay -- From what I have heard from the Carle family in ME, their origins are from Sweden - but I suspect that the Carlile family in York @ 1700 may be part of the Kerley family who were living in Lancaster, MA at the time of the Massacre there in 1676. Also the Kearleys and Cearleys in VA and NC after the 1740-50's. I'd be interested to see what information you have -
