I'm looking for Henry Caza, probably born Theordore Caza in St. Anicet, Quebec. He was born in either 1854 or 1855 and immigrated to the US around 1872. He settled in North Hudson, (Essex County) NY and married Harriet Proctor. Research indicates his father died in the late 1860's (most likely between 1867 and 1870, given the age of his youngest siblings) in St. Anicet. Unfortunately, I don't have his father's name, but the 1871 census of St. Anicet records his mother's name as Victoire. Family legend says he was one of possibly 13 children - three Abraham, Mina (Elmina) and he moved to NY while the balance moved to Michigan or Minnesota, possibly with a stop off in Ontario. Another interesting detail finds two Henry Cazas in North Hudson at 1880. Perhaps the older, living with a Grimes family is his older brother listed as Honore in the 1871 Quebec census. Any leads would be appreciated.

Re: (Theodore) Henry Caza
hello my name is Lee Cozo and my family originated from st anicet and we were also wondering about some info. maybe we can work together somehow at least. our last name was changed after some sort of confrontation. which in turn sent my great great grandfather to change his name from caza to cozo. from the stories that i heard was that my great great grandfather was on a boat and there was another man and they were drunk and the guy fell backwards into the water and from shore it looked like my grandfather killed the guy so he fled canada to come down into the u.s. and that is all we know. recently my family had a reunion for the cozo family and my grand aunt who would be my fathers dads sister. she gave my uncle a booklet from 1990 i think that is about the caza family reunion. my sister is the one who is trying to find out more about how everything from when we came from canada and up to the time when we changed the name. please contact my sister at bktballstar845@yahoo.com thank you again and i hope to hear from you through my sisters email

Re: (Theodore) Henry Caza
Lee - I read the other posts and I don't think I can be of much help. My branch of the family settled in New York and apparently lost touch with those who went west. By matching up Canadian and US census data I found that my great grandfather was actually Honore Caza whose mother was Victoria Duheme. He must have anglicized the name to Henry. His younger brother was the "Theodore" I initially found. My mother related that her Uncle Ted traveled around the US and during the Depression supposedly worked on building the Hoover Dam. There was even a family legend that he had a family out west and one back in NY - what can I say other than stuff happens! Perhaps there is a connection from his travels but unfortunately that's only speculation on my part and I have no way of finding any first hand information for you.

Objet : (Theodore) Henry Caza
Hi, my name is Fabien Caza and theodore or Henry Caza was my old grand father

Re: Objet : (Theodore) Henry Caza
Fabien,
Thanks for the response. My original post (going back to 2004) was incorrect based on some family lore. My late great grandfather's name was actually Honore (it was somehow anglicized to Henry) and his younger brother was Theodore. If your grandfather was the same Theodore, he led an interesting life. My late mother had told me he moved around looking for work during the Depression and spent some time in Arizona as a construction worker on the Hoover Dam, among other things.

Re: Objet : (Theodore) Henry Caza
Marie,
I'm not sure how much help I can be. My mother passed away nearly 3 years ago and she knew most of the family legends. Unfortunately, very little was written. I have been able to find only a small number of records for her Caza family but I think I saw something about a Caza reunion. I did find Henry Caza's grave and that of his wife, Harriet Proctor Caza, in Schroon River NY Cemetery. If I find more I will post.

I live by the Redding Lawncrest chapel on Cypress Ave. ANd my grandfather Lloyd Joseph Caza is buried there.. Can you tell me when the Caza got changed to Cozo and why?

Re: Objet : (Theodore) Henry Caza
I live on the east coast. My mother's maiden name was Duprey. Unfortunately I have no idea regarding the name change. All I can tell you is that the Cazas appear to have split between an eastern branch and a western branch but all seem to originate in St. Anicet, Quebec. Around the 1850s & 60s some went west through Ontario, Michigan and Minnesota, finally arriving in California. Others stayed in Quebec or went down into NY. There is even a small town in Quebec, Cazaville, found right near St. Anicet.

Re: Objet : (Theodore) Henry Caza
I know that there is a small town in Quebec called Cazaville, but I heard rumors from my brother who heard rumors from my father about one of our great ancestors came from Quebec and changed his last name from Caza to Cozo and he and another person, i dont know if the other opponent was our great great grandfather.. but all i know is that somebody came from there and changed it.. so i was just asking..and also what is your name by the way?
