My Caza roots

I believe that my mother's grandmother was named Mary Caza, who was from Canada. I believe, but am not certain, that her family was from the St. Anicet area. Mary was born on Feb. 13, 1873. She married William Rochon in 1890 and they then resided in Ontario. The children of William and Mary included Rose, Lillie, Melvina (my gradmother), Henry and Mary. Family lore says that Mary Caza (or at least one of her parents) was a Native American. On a couple of records I've seen, Mary Caza listed her surname as Cazeau (possibly trying to Frenchiphy her name?). Can anyone help me shed light on this? Who were Mary Caza's parents and siblings? Did they have Native American roots?

My great grandfather was Jean Baptiste Caza, buried at Stoney Pointe,Ontario. He owned a hotel in Comber, Ontario which was left to his son John. JB Caza was married to Marguerite. We pronounced her last name "chal-lay". One of their daughters was Mary Louise, my maternal grandmother. Mary Louise had sisters, the only one I remember was Agnes. One sister married Sam Knapp, who was a farmer in Macgregor, Ontario who I also remember because he would let me ride his work horse named "Babe", but that was more than a half century ago. I think Sam had a big turkey farm raising white turkeys.
Caza, by the way, is Spanish for "hunter". Apropos for a pirate, no?

I do not know the third person at the Stoney Point grave. My grandmother Mary Louise, daughter of John Baptiste and Marguerite, had several sisters and at least one brother, John. Her eldest brother, Uncle Johnny, my mother called him, inherited John Baptiste's hotel in Comber, Ontario. It may be Uncle Johhny buried there. I personally knew only my grandmother and her sister Agnes. The other sisters names I remember offhand were Ashna, and Albina. Aunt Beenie had a daughter, Marguerite, who was raised by my grandmother. My "Aunt" Marguerite married Ralph Diffenderfer.

I do have a pictures of some of the old folks including John Baptiste and Marguerite. Her maiden name was Challet. She looks caucasion as does John Baptiste. I do not think that I have a picture of Uncle Johhny, who might be your great-grandfather. But I will look. The Catholic church in Comber might have information on the grave.

The only reference I have to the pirate connection is from a Detroit newspaper article about a doctor who did research several years ago on malignant hypothermia. There was also a family connection to the Martin and Comartin families with the pirate Jean Dupuis who changed his name to Caza.

Cazador, by the way, is the spanish word for hunter. Caza is spanish for hunting. Caza is not a french word as far as I can tell. I wonder if Jean Dupuis took his father's surname, Caza.

I just now spoke with my sister, Alice, who visited the grave site of our Great Grandparents JB Caza and Marguerite. The other person buried with them is their daughter Albina Caza Odonnell.

Alice photographed the large monument to the Caza's there. She also sent me a photo of the old hotel in Comber.

It was Albina's child, Marguerite Odonnell Diffenderfer, who was raised by my grandmother, Mary Louise. I have a photo of Albina and Louis together and another death photo of Louis in a casket. I suspect Marguerite may have been the daughter of Louis and Albina. But that is just a guess. The old folks never let the kids in on the family business.
