Michael Cawley m. MaryEllen Jackson. Their daughter Catherine Cawley b. 1862 married Thomas Kelley in or near Rochelle, Ogle Co.,Illinois, in 1882 and went to Hand Co., So. Dak to homestead the next year. Several of Catherine's brothers went with them. Would like to know where in Ireland the Cawley's were from and when they came.

I am looking for information on Samuel Cawley who came over from Ireland with his brother in the 1800s. His wife's name was Fanny and they had 7 children:Edward,Lillian, Frederick(died Nov.30 1953),Samuel,Chase,(born May 6 1886-died Dec.11 1968), Mary, and Pauline. Edward was my great, great grandfather and married Julia and had one son, Harold. He was an engineer on the Pa. Railroad.

By some strange chance was Samuel's brothers name John?

I don't know what his name was and that's part of the problem!! The brothers were separated after they came to the US and I don't know what the other one's name was...I have very little info to work with here.

Hi David,
My grandfather, Joseph Cawley and his father before him (Thomas Cawley) were from Sligo as well. Thomas owned a forge and house on Humbert Street in Tubbercurry. Thomas was born about 1858, married a Mary Keenan about 1893 and had seven sons. I knew several of them, including my father. Several immigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, USA in the 20's. They were Catholic and could not find much work up that way. (or so the story goes). Anyway, does any of this sound familar? I know there are many Cawleys from that area and this is just a stab in the dark.

I am trying to find out the history of the cawley's also. What I know is that there were at least four brothers that came over from Ireland separated when they reach the U.S. I know at least two names James and Joseph Cawley. If you ever come across any information more than this let me know.

Hi Gwen, The story I've heard was that four or five of the Cawley brothers came to the States, probably in the 1920's or earlier. Thomas, William, Martin, James and possibly Patrick. Joseph Cawley was my grandfather and did not come to the states until the 1960's or so to live with us in California. The other four and their mother went to St. Louis. The last surviving brother, William just died about 8 years ago in St. Louis. Altogether there were seven brothers. I have a little information on all of them, if this is the same Cawley family you are researching. The majority of the living Cawleys are still in the St. Louis area, except for Joseph's children. They are spread out...my mother here in California, three brothers in Canada and one in New Zealand (now deceased). The last brother, Frances has been unaccounted for since the 1940's. Anyway, if any of this does sound familar, I can give you a little more information on each of them. I know that Martin went into the Navy, Thomas into the Army and William the Navy during WW11. I have Martin's discharge papers, as he was discharged in California. He lived with us for about a year back in the 60's. Do let me know if this corresponds with any info you may have and how you may be related. The Cawley's have eluded me for quite a while now, so it would be nice to hear from another kindred soul. Good to hear from you. Deirdre

Hi Deirdre My dad said, "The brothers were three or four." We are decendants of James Cawley. They came in the early 1800's because My grandfather P.M. Cawley was born in the 1840's in the U.S. There are a slew of Cawley's in the Augusta Georgia area, one family in Mitchell Georgia, and possibly one family in Sparta GA. One brother supposely lived in the Burke County area of Ga. On brother moved to the Utah area. I will try later to get imformation on some of these. Write soon.
Sincerely'
Gwen

Hi Lynn,
I don't know if he's any relation to you, but my great-great-grandfather, John Cawley, is of Irish descent and lived in Scranton PA at least as early as the 1870s. I don't have any information about John's parents or siblings.
