Michael Cava of Templeton CA and the Cava that responded to his query who was from Salinas CA I think?, you're probably 2nd or 3rd cousins. Michael's grandfather Vincent Cava is from Chicago, his grandfather is from Piane Crati (Vincenzo Pulicci was the original name I think, changed to his adopted family name of Cava). Vincent Cava's cousin, Sam Cava and his family(ies) settled in the Salinas area and they were in the canning business & fairly prosperous I've heard; Vincent Cava and his brothers and their families settled in the San Jose/Bay area. I am married to Louis Cava, son of Vincent Cava of Chicago & later San Jose. I am Michael Cava's (the one who posted the query) mother.

To the wife of Louis Cava who posted on 10/11/2011 you have some very intriguing info that I am sure has a connection to my family. My grandfather Joe Cava was from Piane Crate and had 3 brothers one of which was named Sam who did in fact have a canning business here in Salinas. The four Cava brothers had a sister Luisa who never came to America. Both my grandfather Joe as well as my grandmother Barbara worked at the cannery and we have pictures of it as well. My grandfather Joes father was named Francesco (Frank) and he was adopted and his birth name in Italy was Pulicci. He took the name Cava when he arrived here. Word of mouth stories I have heard conflict as to where the name Cava came from. One story is that Cava was the name of the woman who raised Francesco and another is that as a child Francesco played in the many caves in the region of Piane Crate and in Italinan Cava means "cave" I am not sure the connection with your husbands father Vincent of Chicago but I would bet there is one. You have info on my Pulicci biological family name I have never seen posted or found in any of my research. I have a fair amount of info I can share with you if you would like to contact me at matt.cava@yahoo.com

The historical Society of Salinas is looking for a picture of the Cava Canning Company with all employees at that time. We understand Michael Cava is now the cusodian. The society would welcome a reproduction. Contact bobcava@sbcglobal.net Sam P, Cava was the brothr of Joseph, Antonio, August and a sister who is buried in Calabria. At one time Sam P. Cava was the mayor of Campbell Calif.

I believe that Matt Cava in Salinas would have or could get a photo for you, I'll forward your request to him. He is included in the Calabria Cava string of posts. Michael Cava is my son and I believe had posted the original query in this string, but he isn't in possession of much in the way of Cava family history, other than what we've been able to get orally from family members and now from "cousin Matt".
