Hello. My grandmother's name was Maria Grazie Catalano from Montefalcione Italy and came here in the late 1800's. I have researched the name and it appears that the catalano name came from two sources: those that were from the periginees mountains which is called Catalonia located in southern France boardering Spain. I did an internet check and what came back was astounding. That Catalano surname was not Italian- but in fact possibly from the family of Rabbi Catalano Moses from Sicily, originally from Catalonia, and that these Catalonians were of moorish/spanish and not well liked in Spain that the then queen sent them to Sicily and in the early 1800s the King of Italy, because Sicily was so crowded, gave them passage to what is now called the Campagnia region of Italy which is south of Naples.

I also originate from Catalano's somewhere in Abruzzi, actually L'Aquilla Italy. My grandfather Morris Catalano settled in Pennsylvania and Youngstown, Ohio.

I am trying to trace my family, it is proving to be difficult due to the spelling is different on all the documents we have. My Great Grandmothers name on my Grandmothers birth Certificate was Joseph Catalano and her mothers name was Mary Gentile. On my Grandfathers birth certificate his fathers name was Nicholas Catellane & Mother was Maria Girosci, but the Baptism record has the last name spelled Catallano and service record spelled it Catellani. Place of birth was Italy for all the Great Grandparents, the history we were told is the family was or still is in Palermo Italy. Came to the US through NY, some are still in NY the rest of us are in MI and Ohio. If anyone can provide me with any information on the correct spelling and/or where they family is from in Italy, it would be greatly appriciated

Hi,
My Great Grandfather was Domiano (Dominic)Catalano from Calabria...his family owned orange groves...I know he lived in Rochester New York before settling down in Van Nuys, CA. He married Rosa Profetta and had 4 Children. My Aunt Mary Angela, my Grandmother Carmela Mary Natalina, my Uncle Giovanni (John), my Uncle Rocco, and my Uncle Salvatorre (Sam).

There could be a connection there....

Hello,

Researching: CATALANO and CATALFO of Calatafima or Vita Sicily

I am doing some research for a friend, last name CATALANO. His Great Grandfather (Vincenzo) entered the US in 1904 via NY and the family looks like they stayed in Brooklyn, Kings for some time. My friend says that family lore is that they were from Calatafima. I haven't found him on a passnger list just yet.

I am just starting this, but believe this is the family I am tracing:
Vincenzo CATALANO B. 1868 in Italy married...
Teresa CATALFO b. 1872 in Italy. She came over in 1906 with 4 children. Note last residence was listed as Vita)

Children:
Melchiorre (Michael) b. 1896 in Italy
Fillipo b. 1898 in Italy
Leonardo b. 1900 in Italy
Francesca b. 1901 in Italy

There were 2 other children born and died before 1910
I see an Antonia on the passenger list whose age closely matches Francesca's. Though all 4 children above appear to have been born in Italy, so maybe Antonia and Francesca are one in the same??

Is this your family?

Please let me know.

Kind Regards,
Babs
