I am not related but was trying to help someone who wants to link George to the Vinalhaven Maine Carver family

you are absolutly right on with your research.
the earliest record I found for a George Carver before the 1850 census...

Name: Carver, George
Plaintiff/Defendant: PLT
Residence: Machias
Court: Washington County District Court
Date: Sep 1844
Cause: Debt
Location: 56-158
VolumeandPage: 7/24/158

from 1850 on he or his family is pretty easy to track.
But nothing on him beyond the record above

Regards,

connie

Water flooded her heart shock is what caused her death. She was 69 years. She was born April 12, 1902

I've listed much of this info on this line in this thread before.

According to Vinalhaven Vital Records and Clifford Nickels Carver, Israel and Margaret did NOT have a son named George Allen Carver. [Fox Island is the old name for Vinalhaven.] I searched the entire index of the book and did not find a George Carver, Allen Carver, George Allen Carver or Allen George Carver. I also have The Carver Family of New England: Robert Carver of Marshfield and his Descendants, by Clifford Nickels Carver, Litt. B. Privately Printed, 1935. No George Allen Carver. There's an Allen Carver on p. 85 of Carver's book, born in the mid-1700s, son of Jonathan Carver of Taunton and Bridgewater. There is a George Albert Carver born 6 Oct 1836 [p 123 in Carver's book, probably the ship named George A. Carver mentioned on p 145 was named for him]. Neither book lists a George Allen Carver or any other name combination born in, near, about 1819.

Israel Carver [born 2 November 1740, Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, son of Caleb Carver & Abigail Sherman] and Margaret Sherman [born 1 November 1745, Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, daughter of Elisha Sherman and Lydia Walker] are my ancestors through their daughter, Lydia Carver, who married her first cousin, Caleb Carver, son of Capt. Caleb Carver and Abigail Damon.

Vital Records of Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine Prior to 1892, Elizabeth M. Mosher, trans., Picton Press, Rockport, Maine, 1994, p.28 lists the following offspring:

Ziba Carver, born 25 December 1764, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine; married Sarah Norton 20 November 1791, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine [p. 36 in above cited VVR book]
Lydia Carver, born 5 January 1767, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine, married [ca 1837; where is not recorded] Caleb Carver, born 1762, Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, son of Capt. Caleb Carver & Abigail Damon
Israel [2nd/Jr.] born 9 January 1769, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine; married [m. 20 January 1792, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine] Susanna Jewell [born 19 May 1770, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine]
Elisha [Elishua] Carver, born 23 December 1775, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine; married [m. 31 December 1798, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine] Rebecca King [born 14 August 1775, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine]
Lucy Thomas Carver, born 28 October 1786, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine [Unknown why she has the middle name of Thomas]
Joseph Carver, born 17 April 1789, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine
Charles Carver, born 21 February 1791, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine

There is a double descendancy in the Sherman and Doty lines through the third Caleb Carver and Lydia Carver.

William Sherman (2nd) married Desiré Doty (daughter of Edward Doty of the Mayflower and Faith Clark); Desiré married three times, had children by all three husbands, and outlived all three men.
William and Desiré's children were: Hannah, Elizabeth, William, Patience, Experience, Ebenezer. [Daughter, Experience, married Miles Standish, son of Alexander Standish by his first wife, Sarah Alden. Alexander Standish was Desiré's third husband.]

Ebenezer married Margaret Decrow [dau of Valentine Decrow and Martha Bourne]. Their children were:
Eleazer [Illegitimate], Rachel, William, Elizabeth, Joseph, Abigail, Ebenezer, Robert, John, Elisha.

Abigail Sherman m. Caleb Carver (1st) - their eldest son, Capt. Caleb Carver (2nd) married Abigail Damon (this latter couple ended up in New Brunswick when Capt. Caleb and son Melzar were proscribed and banished from MA as Loyalists in 1778; I have a copy of Capt. Caleb's will and two deeds where he's listed in NB records).

Elisha Sherman [bro of Abigail] m. Lydia Walker - their daughter, Margaret, married Israel Carver [bro of Capt. Caleb]

Capt. Caleb Carver and Abigail's son, Caleb Carver (3rd) married Lydia Carver, daughter of Israel Carver (1st) & Margaret Sherman. [There are other Calebs and Israels in this line because nephews were named for uncles and grandsons for grandfathers or fathers of the same name.]

Yes..., I know. One needs a pedigree chart to follow all that.

The fact remains that IF there is a George Allen Carver b. ca 1819 in Maine, he isn't among the known records for this particular Carver family. Going by repeated names doesn't add much to any info since most of the names are repeated endlessly in sibling, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, cousin lineages all up and down the family tree.

There are a LOT of Carvers in Maine and many of them connect to Robert Carver of Marshfield, MA..., but I do not have the Vital Records books for those communities. I'd suggest contacting Picton Press, Rockland, ME for other Vital Records books with info in them, some of which might list the Carver you're looking for. If not, then you need to look in another state and another line of Carvers.
http://www.pictonpress.com/

Best Wishes in your search.

Re: Willis Henry Carver

The person you replied to is looking for a Willis (not Wills or William) Carver from Missouri.

There is a Wills Carver (Wills, not Willis, and not a nickname for William), b. 8 June 1785, Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine who is a descendant of Robert Carver of Marshfield, Massachusetts, nephew of Gov. John Carver of the Mayflower - family origins are in Doncaster, Yorkshire. Wills Carver is my ancestor, as is Robert. My Carver line is: Isaac, Robert, John, William, John, Caleb, Caleb, Caleb, Wills, Allison Larsdel, Fred Allison (only the last two had middle names, the rest are single first names).

See: Carver, Clifford Nickels, Litt. B. The Carver Family of New England: Robert Carver of Marshfield and his Descendants, Privately Printed, 1935.

There are at least three unrelated Carver lineages that I'm aware of in the US (quite likely a lot more, too, but three that go waaaaaay back).

Gov. John Carver had no children who lived beyond infant deaths, so no one descends from him. His brother, Isaac Carver, stayed in Leiden, Holland. John and Isaac were part of the Separatists who left England for Holland. John came to America, was governor of the new colony, died about four months after the Mayflower arrived (Apr. 1621), his wife "died of a broken heart" a couple of months later, according to Wm. Bradford who succeeded Gov. John Carver.

There was a Richard Carver from colonial New England (from England, not sure where). He had daughters, no sons, so that Carver line daughtered out early in America.

Some 75-100 years after Robert Carver settled in Marshfield, Massachusetts, there was a Carver line that was from southern England that settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In correspondence with author Donna Ernst, she said that a William (Will) Carver who rode with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Harry Longabaugh was born in Pennsylvania) has roots with that Carver line. William/Will Carver was shot in a gunfight in Sonora, TX in 1901.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Carver_%28Wild_Bunch%29

Quite a while back I saw an online reference (I don't remember which web site) that had a Carver line from Georgia that started out as being spelled Garver (? not sure if the line was from England or elsewhere) and then morphing into Carver (I don't know how early that line came to Georgia). Unknown if that is accurate, but given spelling variations and misspellings through the centuries, it's plausible.

So, that's four lines for sure..., and I have no idea how many more there might be. Carver is an occupation name for a (usually) wood carver, so there are many other persons named Carver who are unrelated.

Most likely the Carvers in Maine who can trace their ancestry to before the Revolutionary War probably descend from Robert Carver of Marshfield, Massachusetts. Obviously, documentation is the most important.... "Genealogy without documentation is mythology."

I believe that my father, Charles Willard "Chuck" Carver, was their son. He settled in Hampton, married, and had four children.

The senior Mr. Carver lived in Orange County, California. He remarried twice. He passed away in the '70's.

I am having my sister check the family files. However, my Dad was not close to his father, and I don't believe that we know a lot more.

Maybe someone out there has information on following persons,that may have a connection to George Allen Carver. Zeba Carver b.Dec.25,1764 in Vinalhaven,Maine. Son of Israel and Margaret "Sherman" Carver.Per Vinalhaven records, he married: Sarah Norton of Vinalhaven on Oct.15,1791. Why i am going in this direction is that George and Mary Carver named their third child, Sarah Frances Norton Carver b.Addison Dec.19,1847.She Married Levi Hall Kilton from Jonesboro,Maine.,June 4,1867. She died Marshfield,Coos,Ore.,Apr.14,1939. Zeba and Sarah could be grandparants?

I don'tknow much, but am also interested in learning more. He had something to do with our home, which is said to be the oldest house in Mt. Washington, built in 1895. I assume he lived here, and left his initials on a wall as well. It was once a huge plot of land, which was eventually partioned and sold off. It's still on the books as 'Carver Place'

Aside from that one name, who are you looking for and what is the date and location of birth and the names of the parents?

Who are these people connected to and where did they live?

I have the .pdf files of Clifford Nickels Carver's book on the descendants of Robert Carver. I could look up anyone in the index to see if there is a match to who you're looking for (but I didn't see your George Allan Carver when I checked).

Robert Carver was my ancestor and I have a great many of the people in C N Carver's book in my database.

There were two Carvers, father and son, who went to Canada because they are mentioned on the Massachusetts Banishment Act of 1778; the son came back to the US quickly because he married not long after the banishment, lived in Connecticut and had a large family. The other brother/son went to Vinalhaven and that's the one who's my ancestor, as well as the one who stayed in Canada until he died (I obtained a copy of his will and two deeds where he's mentioned).

Are you aware of a different line of Carvers, no relation, who settled in Pennsylvania? They're from somewhere in southern England.

There's a line of Carvers someplace else that started out as a Garver spelling (think they might be from Georgia).

There was a Richard Carver, no relation, who was in New England very early, but he had two daughters, no sons, so that Carver line daughtered out quickly. (IIRC, Richard, his wife and daughters were part of the "Great Migration," aka Winthrop Fleet who were the Massachusetts Bay Colony? I used to know a long time ago, but have forgotten.}

Since Carver is an occupation name, unrelated Carvers from different parts of England exist in different areas of the US.

If you're looking for a descendant of Robert Carver of Massachusetts, I can probably help you..., but I need some clues to go on besides a name with no frame of reference... like date and location of birth, parents' names, names of wife or offspring..., et cetera.

If it's another Carver line, sorry. I can't help with those; I'm just aware of some of the original places they lived because I've seen inquiries on this list, but they are no relation to me so I have no info.
maribr....

Fox Islands is the old name Vinalhaven and surrounding islands..., and they are in Knox County, Maine, not Newfoundland.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinalhaven

There is a location named Fox Islands in British Columbia, Canada, but that's the opposite side of the country, not Newfoundland, Canada.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have the book Vital Records of Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine Prior to 1892 [Transcribed by Elizabeth M. Mosher, published by Picton Press, Rockport, Maine; 1994).
P. 2 there is a "George B Carver, born Dec. 3d, 1848," last child of John Carver on the list of offspring.
P. 155 is a marriage record for a "Mr. George S. Carver and Miss Elmira S. Tolman... on May 23d, 1863 both of Vinalhaven."
P. 187 is the record of the Banns published on May 18th 1862 for the above marriage of George S. Carver and Elmira S. Tolman.
That's the sum total of George Carvers listed in the index for the island of Vinalhaven, Knox County, Maine before 1892. With the different middle initials, it doesn't seem George Allen Carver is in these particular Carver lineages.
These particular Carvers are descended from Robert Carver of Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
Sarah and Abigail are very common female names for women among the descendants of Robert Carver; siblings would use the same names for their offspring. You needs dates and locations of birth and parents' names to figure out which is which.
I have still been looking for our great great grandfather and no luck. Interesting that your post mentiones a Sarah and Abigail Carver. Those were the names of two of his daughters. I have been concentrating on the Fox Islands, Newfoundland for the past year and have not found him anywhere. I stil think his was born out of wedlock to a Carver daughter. No proof but a strong feeling since I have been searching this man for 10 years.
I believe James Carver's parents were Reuben a/k/a Ruben or Rubin Carver and Fannie Carver. Reuben and Fannie had five children, William, James, Thomas, Elizabeth and Sally. I am descended from Thomas. My best information has Reuben born September 20, 1769, in Farquier County, Virginia, lived for a number of years in Amherst County, Virginia and moved to Pike County, Missouri in 1840 where he remained until his death on February 17, 1861.
Reuben's second wife was Nancy Burton Turner Carver with whom he had two children, Rubin H. Carver and Charles E. Carver.
I don't know anything about James Carver but would like to know if you have information.
Thomas Carver
My grandfather was James Vernon Carver of West Virginia. His father was Frank Carver. His grandfather was James Carver who married Caroline Bromage of Crickhowell, Wales. It is my understanding that James was 1 of 5 Carver brothers who sailed from Plymouth England to Plymouth PA to found the Carver Coal Co. I have some old photos of the mine, a portrait of the 5 brothers and I remember seeing a marriage certificate of James Carver and Caroline Bromage. I moved a year ago and have to locate those items. My grandfather was always very interested in the Carver genealogy. He spoke about it frequently when I was growing up.
Thank you SO MUCH for this information.
I think we may have found her. It appears the Leonards were her grandparents and the family was back with Mr. Carver in the 1880 census. I want to double-check children's death certificates to try and see where the error crept in, although it doesn't surprise me as these records are from an era when many people did not read or write.
Thank you again!
Viola Carver Longfellow
Viola Carver Longfellow was my great grandmother, the father of Henry B. Longfellow, my dad's father. Census reports conflict -- one says she was born in Iowa, the other Illinois about 1862. She lived in Monticello, MN after marrying John Henry Longfellow. They had 6 children, Mildred Parkinson, Margarett, John Carver, Hellen, Clarence and Harry Bertram. I've researched the kids a bit, and actually if it wasn't for their death certificates I wouldn't even know her maiden name.
Her maiden name was reported on several children's California death certificates. Still I have been unable to find much about her -- there are no matches for her parents that I can find in nearby states. There was an interesting murder case involving a young woman named Viola Carver in Los Angeles but that was 1912, and as far as I can tell had nothing to do with this branch of the Carver family.
Would appreciate if anyone has any knowledge.
