Like many others I read the book 'Alexander Carswell and Isabella Brown'. In the book the authors assume that Jane (or Jean) Gordon is a daughter of Robert Gordon and Elizabeth Ruthven because of a letter her grandson John Brown wrote in which he states she was a sister to the 'earl' (meaning viscount) of Kenmore. However.... when I started researching I found that Robert Gordon had several illegitimate children, so what is to say she was not one of them? That would change the maternal line, severing the lineage back to King Edward. It could also be that she was the daughter of her second husband? I have searched on many genealogical websites as well as books like Landed Gentry, Scots Peerage, and archives. Nowhere have I found any sign of Jane Gordon. The Carswell book is now almost 40 years old, has anyone found any evidence for Jane Gordon yet?
