I would be interested in learning more about William Henry Carrier, his wife Susan Bligh Carrier following up on the old 2000 post by Gloria Hughes. The Carriers lived in Wisconsin in 1860. He was in the Civil War.After the war they moved to Buchanan County Iowa. They had 5 children, 4 born before the Civil War, one after.

Vernon was born 26 Apr 1903 and Earl 19 Dec 1905. I haven't seen any dates of adoption for either.

Per the Ellis Island Records show:

Given names: Vernon
Surnames: Carrier
Residence: Essex Falls, N.J.
Ship arrival date: 27 Aug 1923
Arrival age: 20y
Nationality:
Departure port name: Le Havre, France
Ship arrival port: New York
Gender: Male
Marital status: S
US citizen: X
Ship name: Lafayette
Collection: New York Passenger Arrival Lists (Ellis Island) 1892-1924

Given names: Earl
Surnames: Carrier
Residence: Essex Falls, N.J.
Ship arrival date: 27 Aug 1923
Arrival age: 20y
Nationality:
Departure port name: Le Havre, France
Ship arrival port: New York
Gender: Male
Marital status: S
US citizen: X
Ship name: Lafayette
Collection: New York Passenger Arrival Lists (Ellis Island) 1892-1924

From newspaper records supplied by a family member I have:

Event
Type: Marriage
Article: WINANS-CARRIER The wedding of Miss Mary Doris Winans, daughte r of Mr. and Mrs. Mark E. Winans, Essex Falls, N.J., to Earle Gardner Carrier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis H. Carrier, also of Essex Falls, is taking place today in St. Peter's Episcopal Church. The bridegroom is a recent graduate of the university here and a former president of the local chapter of Sigma Phi fraternity. His brother, Vernon Carrier, who is well known here, is to be best man.

Tifft was Jennie's mothers surname and Martin was her fathers.

I don't have anything more on the immediate family of Willis Haviland Carrier either. Vernon Carrier was adopted by Willis, he was born ca 1903 when Willis was still married to Edith Claire Seymour who died 1912. Vernon appears in the 1930 Federal Census, Essex Falls, Essex County, NJ, and I'm told he became a Newspaper Journalist (can someone confirm?). However I do not know who is parents were -- if Jennie Tifft Martin was in fact his real mother... (Was Martin her maiden name or her previous husband's surname?) I don't have any natural children listed for Willis via any primary sources I have.

I've gotten kind of dubious of Wikipedia data.

As Willis & Jennie were about the same age and both went to Cornell I suspect they may have known each other from there. Also since both Vernon and Earl have "Gardner" as a middle? name I suspect that may have been their surnames of one of their birth parents.

I haven't been able to find any indication that Jennie was married to anyone else.

Also, it looks like Willis's third wife may have been a distant cousin of his, I haven't been able to tie that together yet tho.

Neal
Hi Neal,

Wikipedia states the they were Jennie's sons. However, I remember a news article in the Post Standard when I lived in Syracuse that talked about the adopted sons and never mentioned the fact that they were Jennies. I will look into this further.

Jeanette

I should update this old inquiry... I now have sufficient census data to prove that Elizabeth R. Haviland is the mother of Willis, and that she is the daughter of David Jay Haviland & Ann Elizabeth Button. Further, we've managed to figure out that Willis Haviland Carrier was named after Willis Hoag Haviland, who was his first cousin thrice removed, and the half grandnephew of Willis Haviland's wife / cousin Hannah Wing Haviland.

I would like to find documentation or verification of the maiden name of Jennie B. Carrier (1881 - 1966) who married Charles Carrier (1876 - 1946) about 1900 in Highland County, Ohio

Charles and Jennie are buried in New Market Twp., Cemetery in Highland County.

Charles is the son of William Carrier and Mary Jane Nave who are also buried in New Market Twp. Cemetery.

I would also like to know the maiden name of Marie Carrier (1898 - 1984) who married Ervin W. Carrier (1900- 1977) the son of Charles & Jennie. They are also buried in New Market Cemetery.

Also, Thomas Riley listed with Charles & Jennie on the 1900 Census for Concord Twp., Highland County, Ohio. The census shows him as 'grandfather.'
Andrew Carrier - Dutchess County, NY in 1800

Hi,

There is an Andrew Carrier in the 1800 Census of the Twon of Clinton, Dutchess County, NY. He is a neighbor to William Heustis, who by 1810 had moved to the Town of Thompson, Sullivan County, NY, where he had other Carrier neighbors. His son may have married the daughter of Elizabeth Carrier, who I have as the daughter of Asa Carrier, born 1744 in CT.

Can anyone suggest who this Andrew is?

I would like to share my findings with those searching Amariah Carrier. I have been studing this line for a Carrier descendant and have no personal connection to Amariah. I hope what I have compiled will be of help to those trying to figure out his ancestry. I believe he may be a son of Amos, the brother of Amaziah but cannot prove it yet. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Linda
I believe that Amariah was born about 1775/1776 in New York.
Genealogists on the internet have given a much earlier date for his birth, listing him as the son of Amos and Phebe Kneeland Carrier and twin brother of Amaziah who was born in 1754 in Colchester, Connecticut. However, Amariah is not listed in the birth records of Colchester with Amaziah. And, the early census records conclude that he was born much later. In 1810 he was living in Berlin, Rensselaer County, New York where he was between the age of 26 and 45 being born 1765-1784. It is worth mentioning here that Amaziah Carrier in 1810 was living not far away in Stephentown, Rensselaer County lending credit to my belief that the two were related. By 1820 Amariah had moved west and was living in Harmony, Chautauqua County, New York. In this census he was listed as age 45 and up, being born 1775 or before. In 1830 he was in Busti, Chautauqua County, New York was age 50-50, birth 1770-1780. And on 23 December of that year he bought lot 15 in Busti. On November 18, 1836 he bought 200 acres of donation land in the eighth district, No. 1643 northeast Centerville, in Crawford County, Pennsylvania from James White, no wife mentioned. No reading has been found for him in 1840, however, his son, Henry Carrier was living in Randolph Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania by then. Living with him was an older couple who were probably Amariah and Honor. Both were age 60-70 born 1770-1780. Then on May 19, 1842 he sold the land to Peter Day of Rome Township. Amariah was living in Randolph Township, and in the body of his deed is mentioned in quotes, "and Annor his wife" four different times. In 1850 the census takers began to list everyone in the household. Amariah was found living back in Busti, Chautauqua County, New York on 4 September 1850. He was age 74 born in New York which would place his birth at 1775-1776. Marriage records show he married Jerusha Hager on 31 January 1844. In 1850 she was age 70 born in Connecticut. They were living between two of his children, Lucy Carrier Gage and Robert Carrier.

LyndaNoyes, since I won't be posting much more on Amariah I would like to share these additonal thoughts with you. These are from some notes I have made (for the person I am reseaching for) in regards to his mother and step siblings and Amos Carrier - NY- Should you ever find anything to verify this lineage PLEASE let me know. FYI:

S. S. Carrier tells us in his genealogy that Amariah knew little about his father that he had died in the army that his mother had remarried to "Enoch Rowley" and had two other children. I have not located an Enoch Rowley of this time period, although there are numerous Rowley families in the vicinity where Amariah lived in New York, however, there is an Enoch Rowell who may be person of interest to prove this lineage. The copy of the S. S. Carrier genealogy which we have is a typed copy and was probably transcribed from a handwritten copy, so the legibility of the name Rowell/Rowley may have been unclear to the typist. More research is needed to determine what happened to Amariah’s mother and half- siblings.
As for Amariah’s father we know that an Amos Carrier served in the militia in Albany, New York from at least 8 October 1776 to 8 November 1776. We also know that according to the 1850 census Amariah was born in 1775/1776. Since no other record for Amos has been located we can assume that he died in the war. Along with this and the fact that I cannot find another Carrier line in the area during this time period who would fit the criteria, it is reasonable to assume that Amariah’s line extends back through Amos and Richard to Thomas and Martha Carrier.

However, this is an assumption and not proven documentation. Most of my information is from online research and family memorabilia. Further investigation of land and tax records from Albany, New York may glean more information about Amos as well as probate and military records not online. The Family History Center in Salt Lake City have many of these records on microfilm. These films can be rented and read at local FHS libraries.

Good luck to all Carrier researchers from this line...it is a challenge. Linda
I don't have any information on Rosa, however, I am also looking up some family history, and Roscoe would have been my great grandfather's nephew. Roscoe's mother, Daisy, was my g- grandfather's sister...so I actually found some information! Thanks!
