One of your cousins (i.e., another descendant of Matthew G. CARRICO) has been tested for the CARRICO Y-DNA Surname Project (#145426):
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Carrico/CarricoDNA-results-H...

His test results prove you are connected to the other descendants of Peter CARRICO, 1674 immigrant to Maryland. Do you have a male CARRICO relative who would be willing to join and be tested?

Re: Carriço in Portugal

Hello Diana -- nice name!

I'm the administrator of the CARRICO DNA Project:
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Carrico/CarricoDNA.shtml

I'm a descendant of Peter CARRICO, 1674 immigrant to Maryland, USA, as are a great many American CARRICOs. It is believed that Peter may be Portuguese, though no actual paper documentation has ever been found, and probably none even exists. If we are ever to "cross the pond," it will likely be through DNA testing.

If you have a male CARRIÇO relative who would be willing to participate, the project is willing to pay for the testing.

The project has already tested one CARRICO whose grandfather emigrated from Portugal to Brazil. He is not a match to the descendants of Peter. So, the big question to answer will be: Will your family match his or Peter's?

If you wish to accept the offer or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me privately (email address via the header above or via the "Contact" link on the project web page).

Diana

CARRICO ancestry of Robbie CARRICO, 2008 American Idol semi-finalist

Robert Lee CARRICO IV, a.k.a., Robbie CARRICO, was a semi-finalist in the 2008 American Idol competition. Like most American CARRICOs, he is a descendant of Peter CARRICO, 1674 immigrant to Maryland. Robbie descends from Peter on this line:

Peter CARRICO I
_Abel CARRICO I & Elizabeth SIMMS
__Abel CARRICO II & Nancy Ann KENT
___Simms CARRICO & Margaret ROTEN
____Andrew Jackson CARRICO & Rebecca DAVIS
_____Thomas Edward CARRICO & Mary J. PAYNE
______Robert Edward Lee CARRICO I & Hallie P. BOWEN
_______Robert Lee CARRICO II & Betty Jean MAXEY
________Robert Lee CARRICO III & Dianna Arlene WHITT
_________Robert Lee CARRICO IV, a.k.a., Robbie CARRICO

I have documented family group sheets for this line online at my web site, which you can access from this page:
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/7/Lineages/Descent-RobbieCarrico...

The Charles T. CARRICO who married Margaret PATTERSON is not the one whose DNA lineage came under question. That Charles CARRICO is the one who married Martha REASON and lived in Sullivan Co., IN. However, subsequent testing has shown that the Sullivan County Charles *is* a "genuine" CARRICO. If there is a break in the DNA line, it occurred, literally, further on down the line.
Ann,

Your message is several years old, so hope this reply gets to you.

I think I have found your John W. Carrico. He wasn't born in NJ, but VA Sep 1854, probably in Fauquier Co.

His wife was Anna P. (maiden name unknown) b. Jul 1860.

1900 thru 1920 the family lived in Nelson Co., VA. They had 6 children:

1. Charles Carrington Carrico b. May 6 1884. Can't locate in census 1910 or 1920. Registered for the draft 1918 in Prince George Co., VA. By 1930 married to a Cythera Woodall and living with her parents in Hudson Co., NJ (maybe your NJ recollection?)

2. Ethel Pauline Carrico b. May 1886. Eloped in NC with a Frank W. Carter Nov 17 1903. Frank died Dec 25 1908. Left her with 2 children Frank & Eugene

3. Verna Kendall Carrico b. Dec. 8 1889. Registerd for Draft 1918 in Prince George Co., VA. Married twice. First wife unknown, son Kendall born ca 1916, poss. more from first marriage. 1920 resided Genessee Co., MI, 1930 Oakland Co., MI with 2nd wife Anna Leach (?)

4. Herford Abner Carrico b. Sep 1 1892. Married Hazel V. Hammersly 1915 Nelson Co., VA. By 1920 resided in Richmond, Wayne Co., IN. His father John W. Carrico apparently died at his house 1938/39

5. Irvin Carrico b. Dec 16 1894. Married Nannie ???. 1920 resided in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH. Nephew Kendall Carrico (s/o Verna) resided with him. 1930 resided in Roanoke VA. Father John W. with him

6. Anna Carrico b. Oct 1899. Married a Tony Milloway. Resided Richmond VA. In 1930 a nephew John W. Carrico resided with the family. Same John W. Carrico who in 1920 with probable siblings Mabel E. & Charles C. listed as neices & nephews in home of John W. & Anna P. Carrico.

The younger John W. Carrico died in CA 1989. Maiden name of mother is listed as "Knight". Maybe the Mable Knight 1892-1916 buried in the Carrico plot in Nelson Co., VA

you may contact me at lboorom@fuse.net
Linda Boorom

The candidate for testing the line of Thomas Ignatius CARRICO has been accepted, so that offer is no long valid.

We had two applicants for testing the line of Peter CARRICO III, but in examing their lineages, we made a closer examination of Peter III and came to the conclusion that none of his alleged children has been solidly connected to him. Therefore, that offer is withdrawn. If anyone in the future manages to forge a solid connection to Peter, please contact me, and I'll see if I can't get the offer re-instated.

Diana Gale Matthiesen
CARRICO Y-DNA Surname Project Administrator

I have no answer here. It would help greatly if we knew when Rachel died. Maybe she was Rachel Rebecca KIRK. And maybe the obituary is in error as to their having been only two wives. We don't know who wrote the obit, and newspapers are notoriously inaccurate.

Given how many census records I have extracted
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Census/CensusHome.shtml
I have gotten pretty adept at ferreting people out using the search engine at Ancestry.com. And given how thoroughly I searched for Thomas and his family, without success, I'm at the point where I consider them to have been missed. Or the pages were lost.

I assume you're aware that you can do a truncated wildcard search at Ancestry.com (and WorldConnect) using an asterisk as the wildcard. For example, in looking for Jeremiah, I searched on just jer* car*. If you use the birthyear plus/minus 2 or 5 as a search term, you can narrow it down to a reasonable number of hits to check.

Well, duhhh. I should have gone to Linda's site, first. I could have saved myself some hair-pulling. We have our connection from Thomas Ignatius I to Vincent to Thomas Igntius III.

I say III, even though most are using II, because Vincent's brother, James, had a son Thomas Ignatius born in 1812, eight years before our subject, so he's II and our subject is III.

What may be the problem here is that we don't have the right birth-year for John. But if John was born after Rachel died and before Thomas married Elizabeth, and Thomas didn't have a wife in-between, we have a bigger problem than just figuring out who his mother was. The most likely explanation then becomes that John is Elizabeth's son, born of a prior husband or relationship *of hers*, making John a stepson of Thomas Ignatius III.

One thing DNA testing can tell us for certain is whether or not John is biologically a CARRICO. Unfortunately, the ambiguity may lead our donor to not accept your line. We do need a candidate with a solid paper trail.

That obit is a jewel. As for the 1860 census, good luck. I searched and searched using ever term I could think of, without success. The only thing I didn't do was a page-by-page search, but I'm not certain enough where he was to do it. Definitely, good luck!

It's looking good. I think your suspicion that your Thomas Ignatius CARRICO connects to Thomas Ignatius CARRICO I through his son, Vincent CARRICO, is correct. This is what I've put together, so far:

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/Car/CarricoThomasIgnatius-Ra...

I envy you being so close the the Maryland state archives! It's very kind of you to make an offer to do a search. If I find I have a specific reference to something known to be there, I may take you up on it.

A member of the CARRICO Y-DNA Surname Project
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Carrico/CarricoDNA.shtml
has made a very generous offer to fully fund 67-marker tests for two key CARRICO lineages:

Peter CARRICO III (1722- ), son of Peter CARRICO II:
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/Car/CarricoPeterIII-_.shtml

and his brother, Thomas Ignatius CARRICO (c1741-c1813):
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/Car/CarricoThomasIgnatius-El...

These conditions apply: 1) that you are a male surnamed CARRICO or CARICO with a patrilineal (direct male line) descent from one of the above [no females can break the chain of descent]; 2) that you provide your paper genealogy in sufficient detail that the donor and the project admin are satisfied your connection is genuine; and 3) that you sign the Release allowing your results to be publicly shared. (Note that publicly sharing your results does not mean publicly sharing your identity.)

You have the option of two levels of privacy. You can be tested as an "Anonymous CARRICO" with the project admin serving as the contact person for your account. In this case, only the project admin and the donor necessarily need know who you are, but I strongly discourage this level of secrecy. Rather, I would suggest the standard level of privacy, in which your name and email address are shared, but only privately and only with those for whom you are a DNA match (i.e., other CARRICOs who have also been tested). Either option provides you with public anonymity.

Personally, I do not see the need for any level of privacy, and I show my complete DNA test results, including my mtDNA FGS (full genetic sequence) online:
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/mtDNA-T-haplotree-DGM.shtml

But I do and will respect the wishes of anyone preferring to maintain their privacy.

Each of these subsidies is a testing value worth hundreds of dollars. Only one test per descendant is being offered, so in each case, the first person to contact me who fulfills the conditions gets the test.

Diana Gale Matthiesen
CARRICO Y-DNA Surname Project Group Administrator

I live with four male Caricos(my husband and our three sons, in fact I have never met a female Carrico, this line has been all males for several generations) that are supposed to be descendants of Thomas Ignatius. I am still working on the hard evidence to prove the lineage beyond the notes that were passed to me. You will find our family tree on ancestry, its called Carico-Wisthoff.
What my father-in-law gave me was not correct(genealogy done by Maud Carrico Russell) and so I have not included the later generations until I have solid proof, maybe that is something that someone can help me with.
At this point I have records for:
Thomas Ignatius 1820-?
John Carico 1857-?
Ernest Carico 1884-1951
Arthur Burdett Carico 1906-1964

Previous to Thomas my records are not complete, but I have figured his father as:
Vincent Carico ?-1842 son of Thomas Ignatius 1740-1812

I am not sure to what detail evidence is needed or if anyone out there has some of the missing pieces. I just started researching in Indiana records online (and I haven't really delved into Kentucky yet) when my father-in-law made a recent trip back to visit family. I am not sure if the line can be proven, but I hope so.

We are definately interested in the dna study and sharing information is not a problem. Please let me know if this is the right lineage and if so what is needed.

thanks,
katie carico
I will try to fill in some of the blanks on my ancestry tree, I already added some census records for Thomas Ignatuis. I have not delved into this too deeply yet, I had been working more on some of the females lines in Indiana and had put off work on the Carricos.
Also, not sure if this helps, but I live in Maryland, 15 minutes gets me to the state archives and I can also visit the local genealogical library where they have tons of local books. I can't guarrantee how much time I have, but if I have a specific search it might make a trip worthwhile.
katie

I don't mind doing page by page if we only had a county to go with, the whole state of Indiana is too much. And there are way too many name variations. I probably won't get to til this evening and i may not have much time to give until next week, i am in the midst of cleaning house for family party this weekend.
Just a thought, maybe John is the son of Rachel Kirk. The obit said there were 12 children of Thomas and two wives. Maybe there were some children born and lost between Jeremiah and John. Too bad there seems to be no 1860 census for the family. Although I did find the Kirks in the 1860 census in Clay County, Posey township.
Last year I did a search of all other John Caricos of the same approximate birth to make sure I was chasing the right family. I was hesiatant to place Thomas as his father until I had some proof beyond Maud Carrico Russell's papers. And all indications lead me back to Thomas with the exception of John's marriage record showing his mother's name as Rebecca.

Yes! You are correct - my great-grandfather is Benedict Joseph Carrico and his wife, Melvina Smith Carrico is a sister to Francis Marion's wife, Mary Ellen Smith Carrico - so actually my grandfather, Arthur Francis Carrico and Wallace and Arnold Carrico were double cousins as their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters.

Pius did indeed have alot of children and alot of descendants.

I just came across these messages and saw that you have a Richard Carrico in Cumberland Cty Il. I am looking for the parents of Jane Carrico who married Richard Queen between 1850 and 1860. Richard's first wife was Emily Kilgore.

Jane was born about 1832 in Kentucky. Her name could have been Nancy Jane. She and Richard Queen had 4 children: Tobias, Emily Jane, Basil and Clementine.

Emily Jane married Daniel Miller. Emily Jane and Daniel are my great grandparents.

I have never been able to find out who her parents were. My mother said she had a brother Richard. My mother said she was in the Catholic Cemetery in Sigel Illinois but we have been unable to find the grave. Of course, it could be unmarked.

Thank you,

Tricia Alexander

Thank you for your info! I have one question, however, that you may or may not know. How did the name Kerrick get changed to Carrico? The Carrico surname is of Portuguese origin and I'm not sure why an Irish family would have changed their surname to make it sound of Portuguese. Thank you again for your info; I am interested in the Mudds and Carricos.
Thomas
I am a descendent of Thomas Ignatius Carrico, through his daughter Mary Carrico Kerrick, Thomas Ignatius Carrico Kerrick, Catherine Kerrick Bradley and Frances Matilda Bradley Miller (my GGrandmother). All the publicly posted family trees show Thomas Ignatius Carrico’s wife as “Elizabeth Kirby”, but I have found entries in Henry C. Peden’s book “Revolutionary Patriots of Charles County Maryland 1775-1783” that show his wife as “Elizabeth Carrington” (page 45). Peden also lists Jesse Boswell as Elizabeth Carrington’s first husband. (page 27).
What records exist that confirm the identity of Thomas Ignatius’ wife? Thanks, Ron Miller

How about that! I had no idea there were so many Carrico's in that region - I thought my Dad's family in Avon was the only one around. I knew we were related to some folks in Kentucky (what Carrico isn't?) and my Dad and his siblings go there from time to time and hang out, but I have never been.

>I know that two of my grandfather's brothers Arnold and >Wallace Carrico moved to Peroia, IL. Both are dead now, but >there are members of the family still there. My grandfather >original came from Springfield, KY

The message I am responding to is 9 years old, so I doubt that anyone is waiting patiently for a response - but who knows? :-)

Arnold Carrico (Francis Arnold Carrico) was my grandfather who moved from Kentucky to Avon, Illinois where he is buried. There are still (Carrico) members of his family in Illinois and some of us lived near Peoria for many years. Wallace (James Wallace Carrico) was his brother, my Great Uncle.

I have little of my own research to offer, but I am interested in our lineage. It was so interesting to see my grandfather mentioned here - that's why I responded.
I don't know that it did change to Carrico. According to the info I have Joanna's brother also marr a Carrico. To me that would seem to indicate that they are a different family.

Some researchers believed that because of the similarity it was likely that these were the same family. Given heavy accents and spelling abilities of those who recorded spoken names, many were misunderstood and changed.

I don't believe that enough Carrick/Kerrick and other variations of spelling have been DNA tested to prove such a connection.

Kay--
~*~*~*~
