Seeking Father of Henry Carpenter (Ohio) 1811

b. about 1811 according to 1850 census in Virginia, m. to Margaret Ingram, d. 7 Apr 1884 in Perrysburg Township, Wood County, Ohio, USA. Any help on leads is greatly appreciated. I have been hunting for quite a while now. I am having my doubts about the Madison, VA lead with presumed mother Ruth Hayward. I need some primary sources of proof if possible.

Horace Walpole Carpentier - Descendant Request

Hello Carpenter List,

Horace Walpole Carpentier (HWC), was a descendant of William Carpenter (b. abt 1605 England - who settled in Rehoboth, MA). HWC is number 12771 in the CE 2009 Data DVD. HWC was born 6 Mar 1824 NY and died 31 Jan 1918 in NY.

HWC later lived in New York City but spent considerable time in and around Berkley, CA. As a lawyer in California, he got into many different things! See the link below for details!

Mr. Alan Cohen of Berkley, CA recently wrote or re-wrote a history of Berkley and also wrote of HWC. See links:
http://historyofberkeley.org/
http://historyofberkeley.org/horace_carpentier.html

He is now preparing another book that involves HWC.

Mr. Cohen is looking for descendants of HWC or those who have information on HWC. He is interested in letters, pictures and other memoranda.

Mr. Cohen can be contacted via email at: alan@historyofberkley.org

Thank you,

John R.
I have found a lot of info on the Whitley County site, Jay county doesn't have a lot online. Now I just need to go there and search the records. If you would like you can email me direct at rondonclev@att.net be sure to put Carpenter in the subject line so I know it is about genealogy. Noble County Library is just north of Whitley County, they have a lot of great stuff online, I can't remember for sure right now, I don't have my books open, but, might find something there also.

Whitley Co. IN is definitely a good place to look for more information, since Solomon Carpenter was there in 1850; his mother and siblings may have been there, but missed by the censustaker.

Some Whitley Co. IN obituaries have abstracted by Nellie Raber in a book titled "Digest of Obituaries Published in Newspapers of Columbia City, Whitley County, Indiana, 1856-1910." The ones for Sarah Brown Sink and Thomas Carpenter are:

Sink, Mrs. Abraham - Sarah Brown was born in Chatham Co., N.C. on 4 Sep 1896 [should be 1806], died on 24 Dec. 1895, was married first to James Carpenter and in 1834 they moved to Ohio where he died 25 Mar 1845. They had 9 children, only 2 now living. Her 2nd husband Abraham Sinks died 2 July 1862. Her funeral was held in the M. E. Church, South Whitley, Ind. Rev. Nelson officiated. He was assisted by Rev. Keesey. Burial was at South Whitley, Ind. - Published 3 Jan 1894.

Carpenter, Thomas, aged 23 years died 10 Oct at his mother's home near Springfield (now S. Whitley), Ind. after a two-day illness. He was a member of Co. I, 152 Reg., I.V.I. [Indiana Volunteer Infantry] - Published 17 Nov 1866.
I have been looking for the Goucher's and Carpenter's in the 1850 census, no luck so far, strange we can't find either of them. I have even searched Jay County, Indiana because this is where I find John Goucher's sister in 1860. Found a couple of possible matches nothing positive.

Have you searched Whitley County, Indiana site, they have some info on Carpenter's. Like marriage, death, cemetery. I Need to go there and see if I can get the estate records for Abram Sink and a few obits, one for Sarah Brown Sink and Thomas Carpenter. whitleycountyin.org

This certainly has been a good example of how true it is that the more sharing the farther we can get - our exchange has added a significant amount to the information I had about James and Sarah (Brown) Carpenter and their children in Indiana.

I still hope to find out where they were in 1850 - that has been a real puzzler. And their origin in NC - if we can prove where they lived in NC, that would give a good clue about which of the several Carpenter line in NC they belonged to. I will keep you updated on anything I find.
I am intrigued by your Carpenter/Zimmerman post. I too am from a Carpenter/Zimmerman line which started in NJ. Here's what I know and I wonder if somehow our lines are connected:

The Carpenter Family was originally Zimmerman. 4 brothers travelled her from Germany. One settled in New Jersey (Joseph),one went to Virginia, a third went to Middletown, NY and the fourth went back to Germany. Apparently, Zimmerman is the English equivalent of Carpenter and that is how/why the name changed. This information and Joseph's line is documented in The Michael Shoemaker book by Jacob Shoemaker and William Blair. Unfortunately, they did not name the other brothers. Does anyone have another source that corroborates this?

If the Elizabeth Shafer who married John Gouger in 1852 was the Lydia Ann Carpenter who had married William Shaffer, Elizabeth would have to be a third name -- not completely out of the question, but enough to make me want to see more information about them.

I currently believe James' and Sarah's children to be:
- Lydia Carpenter, born c1826 in NC.
- Solomon Carpenter, born c1827 in NC, married Elizabeth Books.
- Samuel Carpenter, born c1830 in NC, married Lucy Ann Cordill.
- Joshua Carpenter, born c1832 in NC, married Phebe Bumgardner.
- Sarah Carpenter, born c1841 in OH or NC, married John H. Mundy.
- Thomas Carpenter, born c1843 in OH, died 10 Oct 1866.
- James Carpenter, served in Company E of the 44th Regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry with his presumed brother Solomon Carpenter and presumed brother-in-law John Goucher, and was declared MIA in the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863.

As you can see, there's room for a few additional children. Thanks for anything you can add with your research. I will do the same.
I could be wrong on the children of James and Sarah, I am pretty sure on Lydia, need to do more research on all of them. Do you think it is possible that Lydia could have been an Elizabeth or Lydia was a middle name. I know how they often shortened a name or used middle names a lot, would make sense when they are naming children after their aunts and uncles? Not sure when I will get to Ohio, have lots going on at this time, but, I do want to get there soon.

I am reasonably sure now that they are the James Carpenter and Sarah Brown who married in 1823 and that she is the Sarah Carpenter who married in 1843 in Whitley Co. IN Abraham Sink(s), but previous to your post about Lydia their eldest child seemed to be Solomon Carpenter, who was born c1826 in NC, which left some doubt as to whether they were the same James and Sarah. It's good to know the info is appreciated, and thank you for sharing your research as well. If you get a look at the original 20 Oct 1852 marriage record in Darke Co. OH for John Gouger to Elizabeth Shafer before I do, I would be very interested in any details it adds to her identity.

Yes the Jay County marriage is my John Goucher. Goucher's are mostly in Whitley and Jay Counties, Indiana, both counties are not far from Darke Co., OH.

Do you know if your James Carpenter married the Sarah Brown that later married Abraham Sink? I am about an hour from Whitley County,I will be going there for more research. I am hoping to go back to Ohio soon, Darke County is only about 2 hours from me. I will share anything that looks like it might help you in your search. Thanks you so much for all the info you are giving me :)

I'm not sure if I connect to this Carpenter family or not -- James' North Carolina origin and naming children Solomon and Joshua suggest he might be related to my line. I'm not in the IN or OH area though. Another clue that Darke Co. may be significant is the grave of a James Carpenter who died 25 Mar 1847 at age 51, so born c1796, interred in the West Zion Cemetery in Palestine OH -- looks like he would be Sarah Brown's first husband. I found the grave listed in "Cemetery Inscriptions, Darke County, Ohio" (1972) but also now on Find A Grave with the data from the earlier reading since the stone has been vandalized. I haven't found all the Carpenters in the 1850 census either, so I'm hoping Darke Co. records might give some new information.

There's a marriage license in Jay Co. IN dated 1869 for a John Goucher to Rebecca E. Moore -- could this be your John Goucher's second marriage to the Rebecca Ellen with whom he was enumerated in Whitley Co. IN in 1870?
Is that something I could access online?

I did notice through findagrave that one of his other sons, Levi, I believe, had a daughter named Bernetta Ann, which is almost the same as my gggrandmother, Ann Bernetta Carpenter.
Terry, how do you connect to this family and are you in the Indiana, Ohio area? I am in Indiana, John and Lydia would be my 3rd great grandparents. I have found Carpenter's in Darke County, but, I didn't have time to search when I was there, had other lines I worked on, now thinking maybe I should go back there. I haven't found these people in the 1850 census, so it is possible she was married to this William Shaeffer. All this info you have is a good possibility, I will do some digging and see what I find.

If Mary E. might not have been John Goucher's daughter, then Lydia might have been married prior to her marriage to John Goucher. Here's a possibility -- on 10 Oct 1845 a William Shaeffer married a Lydia Ann Carpenter in Darke Co. OH. In 1850 she was enumerated as born c1825 in NC, with a daughter Mary E. born c1847 in OH. On 20 Oct 1852 in Darke Co. a John Gouger marries an Elizabeth Shafer. In 1860, except for the wife's first name, they match up to the John and Lydia Carpenter Goucher in Whitley Co. IN, with Lydia born c1826 in NC and a daughter Mary E. born c1847 in OH. It would be interesting to see the original of the marriage record for John Gouger to Elizabeth Shafer, to see if perhaps her first name was mistranscribed.

Terry,
I believe you are right in thinking the Catherine age 8 living with Sarah Sink in the 1870 census, is the daughter of Lydia and John Goucher. Catharine Goucher was born 18 May 1862, Lydia would have died about 5 months after her birth. I also think it most likely is the same child listed as "Cassie" in the 1880 census. In 1870 Sarah Sink is on image 28, if you go to image 25 you will find John Goucher remarried to Rebecca and his son Alexander living with him. Sarah J. Goucher another daughter of Lydia and John Goucher is on image 24, living with Samuel Rush and his wife. I have the daughter of Samuel and Lucy Cordill Carpenter as Catherine born about 1856 and died 01 Oct 1860.

Now I am wondering if it is possible that Lydia was married to a Carpenter before she married John Goucher? I wondered about the fact that there was a daughter Mary E. Goucher born about 1847 in Ohio. Everything I have seen on John Goucher has him born and living in Indiana except he died in the Dayton, Ohio Military Hospital. I don't have any other children for them until 1855, a son James Alexander Goucher.
Could your Catherine Goucher-Pritchard be the Catherine born c1862 enumerated in 1870 with Sarah Brown Carpenter Sink as granddaughter Catherine Carpenter, and in 1880 with John and Sarah Carpenter Mundy as niece Cassie Carpenter? Samuel and Lucy Ann Cordill Carpenter had a daughter Catherine born c1856, but she appears to have died young - she was not enumerated with her parents in 1870. In 1900 Catherine Goucher Pritchard was enumerated as born in 1862 in IN, same year and place as the Catherine 'Cassie' Carpenter, so I'm wondering if the 1870 and 1880 censuses were incorrect about her surname.

I don't have a lot of proof on John and Lydia, just some pieces I find here and there, trying to connect the dots. I am guessing John and Lydia would have married in Ohio or Indiana, havent found a record yet. My clues started with the 1860 census for Whitley County, Indiana, I know my Goucher line was there. Found Lydia Goucher buried in South Whitley, on tombstone it has " Lydia Gougher died Oct. 25, 1862-aged 37 years 2 month 3 days". Daughter of John and Lydia is Catherine Goucher-Pritchard, on her death certificate it states her mothers maiden name as Carpenter. Searched other records for Whitley County and there is several Carpenter's living there, all of them are buried around Lydia and Sarah Sink in South Whitley, Whitley County, Indiana.

I looked at this family some time ago because Sarah (Brown) Carpenter was born in Chatham Co. NC, an area where there were several Carpenter families of interest in my research. I don't have a definitive list of James' and Sarah's children, and didn't have Lydia as one of the possible children, but it certainly looks like she could be a daughter.
Walter is my great grandfather. He married Lilly Sullivan and had my grandfather Welborn. Welborn married Mary Lou Carter and had my father Robert. This I know and I know of Nancy's (John's wife) family on back for few generations, but nothing really of the Carpenter's past my great-great grandfather John M. Carpenter. Have you guys found anything else out?

Original Photograph Of Anna Carpenter From Wisconsin

Hello! I have a photograph of a woman named Anna Carpenter, and the picture was taken in Whitewater, Wisconsin. I would guess the picture to date from somewhere between 1870-1890. I am not related to the family, I just purchased this photograph at a local antique store, and I hope that someone out there knows who this woman is. Please feel free to contact me, and have a nice day!
