Caroline, It has been a long time. It was good to hear from you. I checked all my census to see if there was a chance Joseph was living with a relative, but I couldn't find him either. I do have his parents as Samuel and Catherine McDonald, and then Alexander Carnahan and Elizabeth Tomb.
So sorry I wasn't any help, but I'll keep looking.
