I do not have any records, but would like to be able to speak the language to search the internet there for records on my family, both Lorenzo and Vidal sides, as well as find more on Rafaela Carmona. I understand they kept good records in Cuba. There is supposed to be artifacts from my family at Ministry of Education from Jose Marti which my grandmother donated but I heard they may no longer be there but at Casa Marti Museum. I would like to find out, it was a poem written to my great grandmother from Marti and a frock coat he wore in battle belonging to my great grandfather, his doctor Francisco Vidal Cruz. I am very interested in finding out where the artifacts are, and would like to one day visit the island to see them. Any help you can provide would be most appreciated.

My grandmother Celestina Vidal Cruz was born in Mariano, Cuba where I believe the family home was. And her brother was born in Artemisa, where I believe their cigar plantation was. But that's all I know, since I don't speak Spanish I cannot effectively research the records of the island, though I sure wish I could! Hope this is helpful in some small way. Rafaela came to Tampa with the family at the turn of the century and went to school with my grandmother and went on to have a very large family here though we have lost touch with them. Please let me know if you make any progress as I would love to find her family.

hello, my name is rose. i am just taking a wild card to answer yourreply. i was married to peter vidal for 14 yrs in the year 1960. during the early time of our marriage we visited in tampa fla with the couple you mentioned. they were lovley kind and loving people. there seems to be some similarity in your search that some how touches my spirit. peters mothers name was lorraine. she talked about celestina quite often, and if i remember correctly she was not alive. hope this helps

Wendy,
Thanks, this is significant. My husband was born in Marianao also. His parents were born in Havana. Marianao was one of the first working class neighborhoods in Havana.
You say you can't read Spanish. Are you in posession of records that you can't read? If so, I'd like to help with your permission. My husband Salvador is in the US since February of this year and can certainly read Cuban Spanish. In addition, his parents are still alive in Cuba and their minds are still intact. We can certainly get some info from them that you possibly can use. His parents are living in Marianao now. They also have connections to other neighborhoods that are quite older than Marianao. There could be a conncetion there. Would you like to try to find out? I'm willing to help. Thanks again,
Toria

Wendy,
Thanks so much for your reply. Please, can you give me some background of your grandmother's family? If I could just know which city in Cuba it may help to find the Carmona line. Actually, any info you can give would be very helpful. I just returned from a trip to Havana and Matanzas. I travel to the little island quite often. Thanks again,
Toria

Re: Rebecca Carmona - Italy/Turkey

My husband's family is from Turkey. They are originally from the city of Carmona in Spain. They left Spain around 1492 due to the inquisition. In Turkey, all the people who came from that town were called Carmona to designate their original hometown.

Carmona is from the Hebrew word of "Kerem" (Carmon) which means grave vines. The area of Carmona and Seville were famous, I think, for their wine. My understanding was that in Spain these families were quite wealthy.

In Turkey, one of the Carmonas became minister of finance...

Good-luck!

Carmonas of La Cruz, Chih

Am searching for other descendants of the father of Florencio Carmona (name unk) who lived in La Cruz, Chihuahua in the late 1800's. Florencio's father married a daughter of Don Pablo Marquez, a rich land-owner, and the girl was disowned. His father and mother moved to a place called Arguello de Montosa. Florencio was born at Rio Pecos. It is believed this branch of Carmona's originated in Portugal or Guatemala, moved to Mexico. Florencio's father may have been captured by Aoaches and a General of either the Americans who were fighting for Texas Independence or the Mexicans sold him to Don Pablo Marquez who raised him as his son, but after Don Pablo's death, and his grand-daughter's marriage to Florencio's father, Don Pablo's heir ran them out of the hacienda. They went to live with the Indians in Arguello de Montosa. Florencio's descendant's live in Southern California and would like to know if any other Carmonas have heard a similar story and are related.

Thank you,

Emilie Garcia
Port Orchard, WA.
