Seeking any additional documented information about Henry CARLOCK/CARELOCK/CURLOCK/KERLOCK, d. after 1804, of NC and TN. I am especially interested in his relationship to Joseph CARLOCK, probable son of Lemuel CARLOCK, b. 1750, Augusta Co., VA. Did Henry adopt or take Joseph in after his father’s death? Following is the information, including sources, that I presently have for Henry. I believe Henry to be a son of Frederich CARLOCK/CARELOCK (s/o David) of Mecklenburg Co., NC, but need evidence regarding Henry’s ancestry.

HENRY CARLOCK/CARELOCK/CURLOCK/KERLOCK, died Aft. 1804 in possibly Campbell Co., TN. He married SARAH "SALLY".

Mecklenburg Co., NC, court minutes, Aug. 4, 1787, "Kerlock & the Landess vs. Joseph Rogers", say that Henry KERLOCK was awarded money "for the orphans of Christopher Landess, deceased, viz Jacob, Felix and Elizabeth". Furthermore, the 1790 federal census for Morgan District, Rutherford Co., NC, shows a listing for a Henry CURLOCK, with 3 free white males under 16, and 5 free white females. Assuming that 2 of the males are Jacob and Felix Landess, 1 of the females was his wife, and 1 was Elizabeth Landess, this leaves 1 additional male under age 16 and 3 additional females living in the household.

Henry's probable nephew George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (s/o David, Frederich, David) m. Rachel LANDERS, granddaughter of the above-mentioned Christopher Landess. Further research is needed to determine if Henry or his wife was somehow biologically related to Christopher Landess or his wife. The surnames of both of the wives are unknown to this compiler at this time. This compiler is a direct descendant of George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK and Rachel LANDERS.

Henry probably migrated to the Powell River Valley of Campbell Co., TN. The first deed recorded in Campbell Co., TN, was from a Thomas CAMPBELL to a Henry CARLOCK for 500 acres. Households for both a Joseph and a James CARLOCK appear in the 1830 census for Campbell Co., TN. Also, a Joseph CARLOCK was elected both Collector of Public Revenue and Sherriff, Dec. 12, 1826, Campbell Co., TN. Furthermore, the Barbara CARLOCK, d/o Henry and Sally CARLOCK, b. 31 Jan. 1805, in the neighboring county of Claiborne Co., TN, was probably this Henry's daughter.

Henry appears to be closely associated with Joseph CARLOCK, who is listed in Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book as s/o Lemuel, Hanchrist, David. According to Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book, Joseph's father Lemuel died during the Revolution. Additional research is needed to determine the exact relationship between Henry and Joseph. It is possible that Henry took Joseph in after his father's death.

More About HENRY CARLOCK/CARELOCK/CURLOCK/KERLOCK:
1: Received 1797 Rutherford Co., NC, land grant. Grantor with Joseph CARLOCK in deed to Robert WEAR, 1800, Rutherford Co., NC. Grantor in deeds to David PORTER, 1798, and Alexander MCENTIRE, 1803, Rutherford Co., NC.
2: Purchased 500 acres of land, Powell's Valley, Eastern District (now Campbell Co.), TN, 1806.
Residence: Morgan District, Rutherford Co., NC, 1790; probably migrated to the Powell River Valley of Campbell Co., TN. Listed as living in Anderson Co., TN, 1806, when he purchased the land in Powell's Valley.

This is in reply to Meredith KINCAID’s (meredith.kincaid@cox.net) two June 2, 2008, postings to the RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board titled “Re: Henry CARLOCK, d. after 1804, of NC and TN.”

I do not yet have a lot of good documentation for this family. Following is what I do have. I theorize that after the death of Henry’s first cousin Lemuel CARLOCK, Henry may have taken in Lemuel’s son Joseph CARLOCK, b. 1780, southwestern VA; d. after 1823, possibly Campbell Co., TN. Joseph then had sons James B. CARLOCK/CARELOCK, Sr. (1800 – 1865) and Joseph Taylor CARLOCK (19 Oct 1802 – 19 Oct 1857). James can be found in Campbell Co., TN, 1830; Marion Co., TN, 1836 and 1850; and living in the household of his son William, Walker Co., GA, 1860. The younger Joseph can be found living in Campbell Co., TN, 1830; Marion Co., TN, by 1836; and later in Walker Co., GA. The elder Joseph also had an older brother named John CARLOCK, b. 1 Oct 1772, who was probably old enough to live on his own at the time of this father Lemuel’s death. John migrated to Simpson Co., KY.

I believe Henry’s wife was named Sarah “Sally,” and that they possibly had at least four daughters. The youngest daughter, Barbara CARLOCK, b. 31 Jan. 1805, Claiborne Co., TN; m#1. Gabriel VANBEBBER, before 1824; m#2. William MCBEE, Sr., 20 Jul 1835, probably Claiborne Co., TN; d. 2 Mar 1888, Claiborne Co., TN. Based on deduction from the 1790 census information, I believe Henry may have had two daughters born before 1791, for whom I do not yet have names. Another probable daughter was Nancy CARLOCK, b. 1787; m. George GRIMES, 1802, Campbell Co., TN; d. 15 Mar 1864, Knoxville, Ray Co., MO.

Mecklenburg Co., NC, court minutes, Aug. 4, 1787, "Kerlock & the Landess vs. Joseph Rogers," say that Henry KERLOCK was awarded money "for the orphans of Christopher Landess, deceased, viz Jacob, Felix and Elizabeth". A transcript of that court record can be found at the following site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sweetpoe/llandings/...

The above-mentioned Christopher LANDESS’s granddaughter Racher LANDERS m. George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK. George’s father David CARLOCK is believed to have been a brother to Henry. Both are believed to be sons of Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK of Mecklenburg Co., NC. I am a direct descendant of George CARLOCK/CEARLOCK and Rachel LANDERS. I would be very much interested to know if there was a biological connection between the above-mentioned Landess orphans and either Henry or his wife. I do not yet know the maiden names of either Henry’s wife or Christopher LANDESS’s wife.

The above-mentioned Lemuel CARLOCK was a son of Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK’s brother Hanchrist CARLOCK. Hanchrist and Frederick were sons of David GERLACH/CARLOCK (1674 – 1763) of Augusta Co., VA.
