I have used the Ancient Family of Carlisle references for the East Yorkshire Carlills and I can say that mostly I have been able to verify the details that Nicholas Carlisle wrote up in 1822 (using parish registers, etc). So a pretty reliable source I think, and a great piece of work considering no telephones, no email, no internet!

Regards
John

I've spent a bit of time trying to verify (where possible) the info in the book Collections for a History of the Ancient Family of Carlisle (http://books.google.com.au/books/about/Collections_for_a_His...) that was related to my branch.

I first heard about this book back in the '90s but could never look at it as the only copies were in the UK. Along come Google books and I can read the complete book!

I have a Mark Carlill Brown who was a master printer in Hull and also had a 'rubber stamp' shop. I assume Fanny Outhwaite Carlill is Fanny Carlill born Hull 1851; she must be daughter of Thomas Carlill (born 1815) and Martha Outhwaite (born 1820, married 1849). Thomas came from a family of farmers & butchers in Hessle, near Hull. I can provide more detail on the ancestry of Thomas if this is the right links.
regards
John

Greg,

I'm offering a free DNA test to a Carlill that can show they descend from one of the Yorkshire Carlill groups. There is already a DNA match between John Carlill who descends from the branch at Welton, and with my branch which is from Walkington. It would be great if it could be shown we match your Whitby Carlills from North Yorkshire, because that would show we're all from the same family dating back to before the records collected in the 1822 "Ancient Family of Carlisle" book. Otherwise it would also be nice to match with one of the Elloughton Carlills.

Hi,

Looking for info on Carlill's from Yorkshire. I'm descended from Peter Carlill & Ann Cole. Their son Thomas John Carlill came to Australia in the 1840's and started a branch of the family here. Thomas's siblings stayed in England and married.

Most of this branch of the Australian Carlill's are from Northern New South Wales and Southern Queensland as Thomas settled near Casino, NSW.

The 1822 book on the Ancient Family of Carlisle, page 311 says: "There are three families of the name Carlell or Carlill, -- or, as it has been ignorantly written and pronounced Carlin, -- all who have been settled, for time immemorial in the Parish of Elloughton, -- and who, although not conscious of any Relationship to each other may, by presumption, from their immediate neighborhood, be supposed originally to spring from the same stock."

A few of us who trace our genealogy to the Carlill families of East Riding, Yorkshire, have found we have a close match in the FamilyTreeDNA.com Carlisle DNA Study. It would be interesting to get a few more Carlills to join the group. It doesn't appear, to me at least, that we are very closely related to the other Carlisles/Carliles in the group.

Jane Carlill (nee Holliday) wife of Francis

I thought I had the death details of my Jane Holliday who married Francis Carlill 24th November 1846 Welton right, but now I think I'm mistaken. I was led to believe she was buried in Elloughton on 22nd March 1910 Elloughton as Jane Hannah Carlill . The GRO index gives her as Jane Hannah Carlill. The monumental inscription gives her birth as 24th April 1825. I have Jane's details with her husband Francis Carlill up to the 1871 census but I hadn't been able to find her on the 1881, 1891 or 1901 census. I thought perhaps she may have left the area when Francis died. I've discovered that she actually married a George Barker after Francis died. I've found their marriage and details of her and George on the 1881 census but not on any later ones. I think the death in 1910 is Jane Hannah Carlill, single, a bonnetmaker, the daughter of William Carlill. They lived next to our Jane and Francis on a couple of the census records but I'm not sure if they are related. Their Jane is the same age on the census records. My Jane Holliday was christened ( no mention of the middle name Hannah) on 14 Feb 1827 Cavil to George Holliday and Martha Gregory. Jane Hannah Carlill's inscription on her headstone says she was born 24th April 1825. My Jane could have been christened quite a while after her birth but she wouldn't have had her death registered as Carlill if she'd been married to George Barker. Does anyone have the death certificate of Jane Hannah Holliday in 1910 or can you tell me what happened to my Jane Holliday (later Carlill, then Barker)?

Hi Eileen, I have the record of marriage 4/3/1833 John Rudston maried Elizabeth Carlill in Hessle. I have a tree chart of Hessle Carlill's which I can send as an attached file if you let me have your email id.
I have this Elizabeth b 14/5/1815 (married age 18) and I think also married a William Marshall on 18/8/1842,if so John Rudston must have died?
Elizabeth's parents where John Carlill (b 12/2/1786 a farmer and butcher, farmed 112 acres & had servants/labourers so fairly big/wealthy) and Elizabeth X (b in Gilberdyke). I can then trace John back tru two more John's and a Christopher (d 19/3/1733 a shepherd).
Hope this helps.

John Carlill
(I just posted info on some other ancestors in this Carlill line in the Fenby forum, but I thought the additional details belonged here.)

You probably haven't seen this reference, so I'll post a followup. My Carlisle book was printed in 1822, and the author corresponded with Thomas Teale, who married Frances Pridgin, who was a cousin to Bella Pridgin Carlill who married Adams. Frances father was William Pridgin, a "respectable" silversmith at Hull who moved to York when the Roman Catholic Chapel at Hull was plundered and destroyed by a mob in 1780 or 1781. He married Bella Carlill, born 18 Oct 1747, to James Carlill and Frances Bellamy, making her the little sister to James Carlill who married Anne .... and was the father of the Bella Pridgin Carlill who married Adams.

"James Carlill, who accidentally settled in Cornwall, appears to have been on his Voyage from Hull to America, whither he was proceeding to take posession of an eligible situation, when the Vessel was driven by stress of weather into Mount's Bay where going on shore to Marazion, he married Anne ...., the sister of the Proprietor of the Tavern there. He afterwards removed to St. Ives and engaged in Mining concerns."

Thomas Teale had the marriage settlement document between George Carlill who first married Anne Levett, then later married Elizabeth Fenby.

Hello Yvonne. I mentioned this to my Dad at the weekend and the Thomas Carlill from Hessle is his Great Great Grandfather. Another relation who lives down the road from my parents Norman Carlill has done quite alot of work on the family tree and can trace Carlills back to the Hessle/Elloughton/Brough area of East Yorkshire to the early 1700's. For info my Dad has a photo of the above Thomas Carlills grave stone from Hessle Church which was dated 1845. Best wishes to you and your family for Christmas and Happy New Year yourself. Cheers John.
