Just trying to find out more Carlile history and where I come from. My grandmother was Lena Carlile. Does Twila have a brother Larry and sister Betty? If so, I am trying to piece together names, marriages, children any other info you might know. I am Larry Carlile's daughter and know almost nothing about this side of the family. Thanks so much!

Monica

I am a descendant of Thomas Carlile and Matilda Wilkinson. I believe that Thomas married Lucretia Huston after he was married to Matilda. I am looking for information on the fate of Thomas Carlile: when and where did he die? I'm also looking for solid evidence that he was the son of James Carlile and Mary (Mariah) Whitcraft. They are identified as his parents in several family trees, but I have yet to find any solid evidence to confirm that relationship. Do you have any information that can help me fill in the blanks on my family?

John Gamon

Looking for any information on the marriage of Charles E. Carlile, born abt 1906 in Central Falls, RI and Pauline Malcke/Mcavoy(stage name Pamela Clifford). Probably married in New York in the mid 1930's. Charles was a popular radio singer in the 1930's and his wife was a Broadway dancer. Would like to know if they ever had any children.
Charles had a sister named Florence who married H. Glenn Payne, a Baptist Minister.
My interest in these people is the fact that Charles was my mother's godfather whom she knew when she was a little girl.
I, too, have ancestors (McBride) who are identified in Georgia land grants as having arrived on the Hopewell in 1769.

Thank you so much for posting the transcription of the newspaper article.

Will you please post the source for the article so others of us can cite it in our research, too? Your help is greatly appreciated.

I came across a wonderful manuscript at familysearch.org Books today. The concentration is on the family of William Little of Burke County, GA, but the authors did a wonderful job of assembling information about the passengers of the Hopewell and some history of Queensborough. I do not see a Carlile listed, however. Most helpful are the sources that the authors listed in their manuscript. Perhaps some of them will help you, too. Search for the manuscript "William Little, Jr. of St. George Parish and Burke County Georgia 1753-1800", by Eleanor Little Lotz and Jack Coldwell Lotz, 3917 Buena Vista Ave, Jacksonville, FL 32210. 1994

I spotted a website that stated part of the passengers of the Hopewell in 1769 went to District Ninety-Six in South Carolina. Haven't been able to pursue the research into this group yet.

Thank you again for the transcription.

Denise,
The key to knowing if you descend from John H. Carlile is to start with the first proven ancestor that is a Carlile, or descends from a Carlile.

Please tell us about that person; his/her name, date and place of an event in his life. Then ask yourself how you know that fact.

LeRoy

Irish Immigrants From 1763/64 and 1794/96

I have been told that my 4th great grandfather, William Carlile (B c1753) and wife Sarah (B c1763) apparently married in Ireland, and immigrated about 1794-1796 to America. They both died about 1825 in Monroe, Carroll, OH area and are buried in the New Scott Cemetery in Monroe Twp.

Some researchers indicate that William and Sarah lived in Chester Co. PA, and moved to Washington Co., PA, Brooke Co., VA, then Tuscarawas Co., OH.

However, according to the History of Chester Co., PA, (1881)a William Carlile family living in the New London area, immigrated around 1763/64, stayed there for many years, and their son William and his wife remained on the family farm until their death, around 1840.

I am wondering if anyone has any documentation regarding the William and Sarah Carlile who died and are buried in Monroe Twp., Carroll, OH.

The other thing of interest is that there is a John Whitcraft listed in the Chester Co., PA 1790 Census, close to William Carlile. Two of my William Carlile sons, James and William, married Whitcraft girls in Tuscarawas Co., about 1818 and 1830. I am told that the Whitcraft girl's father is a John Whitcraft.

I know that family stories get mixed up and confused over the years, but I am wondering if anyone has followed both of these lines of William Carlile families to see if their is any connection, or if these two separate Carlile families are indeed separate, and have just become merged over the years due to similar names? Thanks for any help in clarifying (especially with sources) these two families for me. My email remains sdcarlile@gmail.com

Born in Ireland in 1753 died in Monroe Township Carroll County Ohio on 8-25-1825. I have the tree from there down to myself and believe it to be accurate, but who knows. Can we help eachother? Look forward to hearing from you. I am Fred Carlisle. I live in CAlifornia. The "s" was added by my great aunt probably in the 20's. The story goes she thought it to be more sophisticated.

Re: Mary Carlile

Hello Renee,
Have you read the Haines ancestry book? I have just put it up on my Pollard tree on here. Kind of new again to Ancestry.com been away for about 10yrs. Anyway, I read some posts that state the reason Mary Carlile couldn't be Native American is because she couldn't manage the affairs of the estate after the death of her husband. Well the Haines genealogy book clearly states that she became well educated and could read and write and that the estate was not only left to her, but to another female relative as well. So that means she could manage the affairs if need be. Let me know if you find out anything new. I'm thinking about hiring someone to help on this in the future.

Carlile married Elizebeth Catron a part Cherokee and they had eight children. Carlile was robbed in his home and killed in 1874. There is more about the killing on the internet, but just now it eludes me. Elizebeth Catron, 1834, came to Oklahoma during the trail of tears time
