Re: N.Y. Carhart lineage

Just to correct some typo/presumptive text issues in my earlier post. Katheryns married name was Spoor......she had two children a son and a daughter Ruth. My cousin Ruthie married Arnold Demerest and had children and grand children. I still have not found any information about cousins (I do know they were all boys as Ruth's always told me I was her first girl cousin). She was very attached to my Dad and was 16 when I was born. That would probably mean that any cousins we had on the west coast would be born between 1930 ish and the mid 40s as I don't remember any clone to me in age. Another correction David E Carhart was named for Ernie Ridel....his mom lived on Montgomery St in Rhinebeck very close to my grandparents who were at number 120. One distinctive characteristic of 120, besides being a beautiful house, was the state stone mile marker marking 100 miles to New York City. It was in the shape of a stone house with peaked roof and we called it the mouse house. My grandfather, Oscar, was a long time firefighter and I believe chief in Rhinebeck. The other error was that my brother was born in Mt Gilead, Ohio. All 3 of Ward's children are alive at this time as are his 6 grandchildren. David's only son, Justin, is about to have his second son (along with twin daughters) so this branch of the Carhart line is growing.......Paula Carhart Hilston

Justin...you are right in so many ways...let's see if I can fill in a few gaps. My Dad, your Grandpa Carhart was the second youngest of Oscar and Paulines children. Kathryn..who married a Spoof was the eldest....then there were two (I think) other brothers...Oscar and maybe Edward. By the time I came along they had moved to California so we didn't know them. A couple years after Ward was born there was another baby. Uncle Harold lived in Chicago, he was married to Virginia. He died before my Dad. In approx 1929 Pauline Cramer died and my Grandpa Carhart, your great grandpa remarried an Elsie Cramer. I have never been able to figure if they were sisters or cousins. The only Carhart cousins I ever knew we're the son and daughter of Katherine Carhart Spoof. I do not know any other cousins as Uncle Harold had no children. Our Dad was of the impression that his son, your Dad, David Ernest Carhart was the last male of that line of the family so you would have held that position and now Kevin. David was the third child of Ward William Carhart and Kathleen Emme Bishop. My Dad met her while stationed outside Little Sunnis, Essex England. They were married on October 13, 1943. Kathleen moved to the states staying with her in-laws until my Dad was finished in the war. Your Dad's middle name was the name of a dear friend and neighbor of my Dad Ernie Fidel who was killed in action during WW II. Your Dad was born Aug 14, 1952 in My Gulied Ohio. He had two older sisters Paula Margaret October 17, 1948 and Christine Mary September 20, 1950 both born in Springfield Ohio. My Grandpa Carhart died approx early fall of either 1964/5 Elsie Carhart died in the early 1980. My mother is still alive, living in England and is 92 years old. Ward married a second time on February 2 1969 in Las Vegas to Selma Jean Killebrew. She died fairly soon after Ward

Lydia Franz Carhart or Lydia Franz

For the past few days, I have found myself laboring over which Lydia married my ancestor John Compton, 1730-1778. I have read he married Lydia Franz, the widow of Robert Carhart, and had, at least, the daughter Amy. Lydia already came into the union with a daughter by her first husband Robert. However, what perplexes me is most of the family trees have John Compton marrying a Lydia Franz Carhart with the birthdate of Robert Carhart's daughter, August 30th of 1732. Being that the 1732 year matches better with John Compton's birth year of 1730 (I realize he could have married a Lydia Franz born in 1713, but it seems unlikely), I find myself wondering if he actually married the daughter of Robert Carhart, rather than the widow. To complicate matters further, one of the three U.S. and International Marriage Records I have attached to Lydia Franz is accompanied with the daughter 1732 birthdate - but only in the Facts and Sources mode. Does anyone have any insight into this conundrum I've drifted into so more certainty can be found?

I believe the parents of Daniel H. Carhart are Richard Carhart and Catherine Andrews. Daniel and Charlotte gave birth to Dr. Edward W. Carhart in 1856 (2 years before Charlotte died) who was my great great grandfather. Edward married Alma Louise Cookingham and gave birth to Oscar Edward Carhart in 1882 (my great grandfather). Oscar married Pauline Cramer and gave birth to my grandfather Ward William Carhart in 1920; Ward passed away 2 days after Sept 11, 2001 on Sept 13th. Now the rest is pretty embarrassing but I can get the info pretty easily: Ward married ??? and gave birth to my father David E. Carhart in ???. David married my mother Diane Walaszek and gave birth to me, Justin Carhart in 1980. I married Misty Johnson and have a son, Kevin Carhart born in 2008.

I am looking back and see the Carhart tree branches out fairly far but from what I was told, I (and now my son Kevin) am the last "Carhart" male but I hope I am wrong. I know this post was written in 2000 but I hope you get the opportunity to get back to me or anyone else who reads this.

Thanks
Justin Carhart

There names were: John, Robert, William, and Daniel? I am interested in dates and locations of birth, marriage, and death, as well as spouses names.

Most importantly, I am trying to figure out if one of these sons is the father of my ancestor, William Lord Carhart (b. abt. 1730) who married Rosanah Ferguson (b. about 1725)

If you have any info on these names, I would greatly appreciate reading it. His son, Seth, was also born there in Carlisle. I have descendants from this union if you are interested.

Can you give me a source for this info about Wm Lord Carhart marrying Rosanna (Ferguson) Stafford in 1765 in Sussex Co., DE? I was very excited to learn this.

I would also be very interested in any ancestors of Wm. Lord Carhart. He is the last of mf line that I have found although I do believe he may be a descendant of Thomas Carhart.

Hopefully we can help each other.

Generia

This is what I have on him:
born about 1730 or 1750 (first US Census Vol.25 pg. 44)
died about 1786 in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania
married Rosanah Ferguson 1765 in Sussex County, Delaware

Rosanah was born about 1725 possibly in Pennsylvania
They had two children:
Seth Carhart born in 1764 in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania and died in 1806 in Muskingum County, Ohio
Robecca Carhart born about 1765.

I believe that the William Lord Carhart(b. 1730)I am looking for may possibly be a son of either William Lord Carhart (b. 1692) or a son of one of the other two brothers, John or Robert. My goal is to find the connection between William Lord Carhart (b. 1730) and one of these three brothers. Then I can connect back to Thomas & Mary.

These are some other bits of info you may be interested in:
I found another brother to Thomas & Mary on Ancestry.com. His name is Daniel born1697. Wish I had supporting documents on him.
On Onefamilytree.com, Mary Lord's parents are listed as Robert Lord born 12 May 1625 in Townchester, North Hampton, Eng. Mother is Adrian Irene Baysay born about 1627 in Hartford, Connecticut. Most other sources list Mary's parents as either Phillips or Stanleys so what do you think about this confusion?
Have you seen the spelling KERHART?

Any help you can give me would be so appreciated. Even if you can only give me some ideas of where to look.
Thank you,
Generia Perkes

Would anyone know the name of the cemetery where Captain Cornelius Carhart (1729 - 1810) is buried, and directions to the cemetery from a major highway? We hope to visit his grave and pay our respects to our ancestor as we travel through New Jersey this summer.

Thanks for any and all help.

- John J.

Just because Daniel is not listed in the Thomas Carhart book does not mean he is not of this family. I think Mary Dusenbury did a wonderful job on this publication, but she explained in her forward that many people in the family to whom she sent letter in the middle 1850s did not reply. That is one reason the New Jersey lines are much less informative than the New York lines in the book. So, I was wondering if there was another way to find out about the parentage of Daniel. I have also found that the name Carhart is extremely singular. It is only found in Cornwall and Devonshire, England. In some of the records it is spelled Kerhart, Carhartte, etc., but everywhere I have found this name in the U. S. and was able to connect it, it connected to these families of early Cornwall and Devon from 1300s. Robert's son Cornelius went to West N. J. and he had a grandson named Daniel (of Hunterdon Co., N. J. and later was in Pa.). It is still possible that your Daniel is related to this whole family. Wish you the best in your search.

See my prior response. Thomas and Mary had 3 sons only... no Daniel. What is your source for him? After Thomas died in 1696, Mary married Thomas Warne Sr. They had 6 children. The will of Thomas Warne mentions their children plus her 3 sons by her first husband, it does not mention a Daniel Carhart. Perhaps your William Lord Carhart is the same one as mine, the son of Thomas and Mary, born in 1695 and who settled in New Jersey. Is this a possible senario for your family. The William Lord Carhart born 1695, died Nov. 1747 in N. J. He married Phebe and had: Jacob, John Sr., Richard, Thomas, Phillip and Phebe as children.

I have only 3 sons for Thomas and Mary. They married Nov. 1691 and he died March 1696. The sons were John, Robert and William Lord Carhart born 1692, 1693 and 1695. This is from a book written about Thomas and Mary, by Mary Dusenbery in about 1875. I do not have a William Lord Carhart born 1730 who married Rosannah Ferguson. In what state were they married? I have a complete data base taken from this book and also added to from my own research over the years. Please send more information on your William Lord Carhart.
Thanks so much.

I believe you are all a part of an elusive portion of the Carharts that I have not been able to directly connect to my family line. The majority of the Carharts currently living in the US descend from Thomas Carhart and Mary Lord who emigrated in the mid-1600's, but there is a group that came to the US in the mid-1800's, from Cornwall, and settled in the midwest. I think you come from the latter. However, as all Carharts are from Cornwall, I would love to get back beyond Thomas and Mary Lord and find where we intersect. Just how far back can any of you go?

Cornish Carharts

Kinfolks,

Here's some info that was recently sent to me:

Cornish place-names consist of two elements, the essential root and the descriptive epithet. The roots are the familiar ros, car, lan, tre, pol and pen. These have the following meanings; heath, fort, valley, home, pool and headland.

To these are added the epithets such as cavel = horse, dew = black, mear = big and press = meadow, etc. Thus one arrives at typical Cornish names such as Pencavel, Rosdew and Polmear as well as Carhart, ‘Fort of the Ram’.

Anglo-saxon place-names are the reverse having the descriptive epithet first followed by the essential root. Typical Anglo-Saxon names are Batley, Mirfield, Bradley, Preston as well as Barton.

The village Carhart appears in the Norman Doomsday Book with both Celtic and Saxon forms as Karharta Barton. The Saxon influence appears to have been short-lived and the village, like so many in Cornwall, retained its Celtic name.

Aerial photography conducted by archaeologists over the area of Carhart confirms that the settlement there dates to the time of the Celts prior to the Romans, possibly as far back as the Iron age, 1000 BC.

Our family history is a very long one and represents the persistence of a Celtic tribe from the Iron age right up to modern times.

The last known resident of Carhart, who bore the surname Carhart, was Hicks Carhart in 1764.

Here is a satellite view:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&amp...

My link is through Thomas Carhart "of Cornwall" who arrived in New York on August 25, 1683 holding the appointment of private Secretary to Col. Thomas Dongan, then Governor of the British Colonies. Mary to Mary Lord on November 22, 1691. His father is said to be "Anthony". The "of Cornwall" is my only tenuous link to the village of Carhart.

Cheers!
Lowell

Ruth was married to George Arthur Putnam, originally from the upstate New York area. Ruth was a radio singer. She was the voice of Elsie the Cow for Borden, and the first person to sing "I've Got You Under My Skin." George was an announcer for CBS, and worked with Ed Murrow in the newsroom during the McCarthy era. Eventually they moved from Connecticut to LA. After his death in the 70s, she later moved to Visalia, where she died. She was warm, affectionate and loved children, and of course, had a wonderful voice

As for the Carhart family tree. I know very little about it. The only info I have is Ellsworth, Kansas. I did a google search and found this message board.

Dr John E Carhartt

I have just received some genealogical documents from the 1930's. In this material I have found some newspaper clippings of a Dr John E. Carhartt, concerning church and other records. There are letters he wrote for genealogical purposes, as well.

The documents were from 1936 and were sent concerning the family history research of Alfred Mossman Landon. Is anyone researching this family?
