Dear Chris, Noonan was married to Carabine's daughter. So Mrs Noonan, a teaching assistant was the woman who taught at Leitra as far as I know. I think she retired about 1962.

Sadly my mother has died and she was the font of all knowedge in the parish.
I will float it in Ireland when I go there in August.
My father's father was taught by Carabine, Mr Carabine!

Williamstown is having a 'Gathering' in august so watch oyut, 20th to 24th I think are the dates!

I am wondering if you are talking about my grandfather's sister Josephine Noonan! She was born in 1897 so the retirement would make sense. Her mother was Mary E Carabine who married John Noonan. It's amazing to hear that your father's father was taught by Mr. Carabine! This is probably Mary E's father. I am the fifth generation of teachers in my family but until I started family research I had no idea! Would you mind if I sent a few questions to your email? I am having a really hard time w/this line of my family.

Interesting! I just came across an obituary for a cousin, Patrick McDermott, it says he was educated at Polredmond National School, where his mother (Teresa) and Aunt (Josephine) both taught. It also said he was the fifth generation teacher, so I guess that makes me the 6th!

I knew Josie Noonan, Miss Noonan well as a child! She was lovely, a reserved lady, a retired teacher. If I am not greatly mistaken, her sister was married to Johnny McDermott, Carrenderry Williamstown. If this is the case, Mrs Mc Dermott had 3 sons and a daughter. The famous son is Bosco McDermott, famous for gaelic football and has 3 all-Ireland medals. He too was a teacher, as was his brother and sister. I do not know what the third brother did.

Yes! Years ago my sister and her family went to visit Williamstown and were shown around by Paddy and Mary McDermott. They thought the world of them. I didn't get to meet them (not sure if Mary is still alive or how to contact her) but I did meet Mary and Eanon Kirrane (if you happen to know of them) and Eanon was kind enough to bring us out to Kiltulagh graveyard where a few Noonans are buried. We went in 2005 and I wish so much that I knew more about my family or had done some research before I went. Now I have so many questions and don't know where to ask them!

Keep at it!! Paddy McDermott died. I think Mary is still alive. She is a Presentation nun. Mary Kirrane has died also. She was a beautiful woman altogether. Eamonn is very good and kind. He did my mother's funeral very well. I can get a contact with Mary Mc Dermott for you before long through friends of Bosco. C

Just talked to a cousin here in the states who told me that My granddad (Frank) went back to Ireland in the 1960s and lived with Bosco for a few months. Interesting!
