Hi. I'm in charge of the Mississippi Caperton Family Reunion this year, so I'm trying to get names and addresses together. Henry and Edna had several children (don't know what order):
Ruby Webb Caperton married Carl Pittman Lipe and lived in Vance Mississippi (my grandparents). Nannie Beth Caperton married Garland (?) Steadman and lived in Hattiesburg MS. Aline Caperton married Walter Darby and lived in Noxapater, MS. Henry (?) Caperton married Edith (?) and died at an early age in a car wreck. Cecil Caperton married William Clement and lived in Noxapater and Jackson, MS. Ralph Caperton married Otis Kilpatrick and lived in Louisville, MS. All of these people are no longer with us but they all having living issue. That's where it gets REAL complicated. Proud to say that most of the Caperton family are honest and have a great deal of integrity, and we sure do have a GREAT time when we get together!

I don't know if the original poster of this thread is still curious, still reads this, or has found what they are looking for elsewhere, but I have an uncle named Tom Caperton who grew up in Covina California, which is in Los Angeles county. His father, my grandfather was an English teacher in that area as well. My grandfather's name is Edward William Caperton. Also, this particular family was from Illinois and elsewhere. I don't know if this is what you are looking for, or why you are inquiring, but that is my contribution.

I know this is a very late response to this message, but I hope you are still on ancestry and able to read it. I've been researching the Caperton line from Mercer, Summers and Monroe counties in West Virginia. John Stodghill is also one of my ancestors and Malinda - I suppose - would be some sort of grand Aunt.

In 1880, Malinda and her husband John Noble lived in a homeplace on a farm owned by her brother Overton Caperton. This (large) farm was and is located near Shanklin's Ferry in Pipestem, Summers County. Overton apparently owned most of the land in the area - the households listed in the 1880 census list his ownership of 110-121. It appears 11 different families lived on the farm. Most of the families listed are somehow related to Overton.

In Malinda's home the census shows:
John B. born 1826
Malinda B. 1829
James B. 1857
Margaret B. 1859
Henry B. 1861
Granville B. 1866.

But that's not the end of the story! Recently, I ran across a newspaper article that detailed the discovery of a large sum of money in Overton Caperton's home. It's posted on our family blog - in an article titled Did you ever wonder what happened to our inheritance? This article and many other Caperton (from West Virginia) articles can be read at www.prideofwestvirginia.org
- Laurie Stone

There are still many Caperton family members in Sebastian County, Arkansas who descend from Thomas Caperton. We are trying to sort out the lineage of Thomas and I would LOVE to compare notes.
There's a mystery about my ggmother's real name. She may have been married before but kept it to herself.

Here's what I know and/or believe to be true.

Birthname: Frances or Fannie Caperton
Born in Ohio in 1861; both parents were born in Ohio too (names unknown)

In 1880, she is listed in the Census as Fannie Larrision in
Gallia WV (which may have been WV at the time.)

She is listed as a housekeeper for the Morton family.

She married Richard L Jolly in Gallipolis OH/WV under the name of Fannie C. Larison

She named one of her children: Earl Caperton Jolly.

Anyone with a clue as to who she is? Or how I can track it down?

Received your posting concerning Polly Swope. Go to www.caperton.info and you will find a listing of surnames. Also you will find information on the Caperton Family History. The book is now available from that web site. There is information that I believe fits the time frame and the names you have given. Online I was unable to find the 5 page history of Mary Caperton Swope plus a map of the area in Kentucky that is in the printed version of the book.
You may contact me at Maico55@aol.com

Trina;
I am interested in the CAPERTON book..the reason..in 1798? Joseph BAKER and Mary Polly SWOPE appear on a
marriage bond with William CAPERTON as surety? I believe that this Joseph BAKER/Polly SWOPE could very well be my ancestors and maybe the parents of William H. BAKER c1805-1881 who died in Franklin Co TN..WHB md 1/Diannah
___? several children..Diannah or Susannah or__? died ca 1855-56? If I could find out her maiden name and place of marriage if would be a big help..Is there anything in the book about a BAKER/SWOPE/CAPERTON connection?? It is thought that Joseph B. died a young man with 2 or more children. Any info will be appreciated. Be glad to exchange.
James Baker.
1st My new E-address is Lenrein2@yahoo.com....

Trying to contact Wanda, descendant of Carrie Dora (Jones and M.C.Caperton thru their daughter Willie Ira Smythe-Caperton of Winston County, Mississippi:

I'm still working on the Nash family book project and am also trying to get documentation for the photo that I believe is of your great-grandmother Carriedora Jones-Smythe's mother Martha M.B. Nash-Jones. It is of the same type of photo as the circa 1860s photos of all of her other Nash siblings that have been passed down in my family and that all clearly identified (unfortunately, the back of this particular photo that I suspect is of Martha read's illegibly "my Aunt Xxxxxx Nash".

I just reviewed our last coorespndance (around March 2005) and you were then checking about other old (1800s-early 1900s photos that have been passed down in your/your cousins family and also checking with cousins to see what they maight have (also your son was working at fixing your scanner).

Also you will recall that I sent you a scan of a photo that my grandfather had.... labelled "Lucy Caperton, Ira Smythe's girl" (your Aunt Linda Lucille "Dolly" Caperton-Edwards when she was about four years old) and you have the same photograph..

Looking to hear back from you again.

Sincerely, Len

New E-mail: Lenrein2@yahoo.com

1909 Letter from Mrs. William Caperton to the Scruggs Children

This is a pretty long post, but I hope you find it interesting.

The following finding was fascinating to me. I found a hand-written letter while going through some of my father’s belongings. I'm pretty sure it was written by Louise E. Caperton, wife of William Walter Caperton. I believe William Walter Caperton is the son of Milton Thompson Caperton but I haven't confirmed this. Also, other than an obituary from 1911, I can't find any info on Louise E. Caperton. I'd love for someone to help me fill in the blanks.

The letter mentions almost all of my grandfather’s brothers and sisters: Claud, Lem, Pearl, Mae and Arthur. My grandfather, Sam Camp Scruggs, and other children including his brothers Berry and Jesse aren’t mentioned. I’ve typed it as it was written, including misspellings.

The envelope is addressed to:
Mrs. Jeffie Scruggs
R1, Box 19
Aquilla, Tex.

The postmark is very clear and reads Mar 5, 1909 at 7:30 PM from Dallas, Tex.

Dallas Mar 4th 1909

Dear Children,

(Page 1)Your letter came some time ago, found all well. Can’t say how long we all will stay that way. Not long for Willie. We are now fixing the yards. Have now some pretty flowers. She has bought several rose bushes and different kinds of bulbs and vines. Quilt (?) arrived all right. Many thanks untill better paid you can’t work for nothing.
(Page 2) You need not been in such a hurry, it made me feel bad, it was the last sewing pour Mary did. Well I have first lead (?) of the Galla (?) day in Washington, old Taft taken his seat-wish it had broke down with him. If my mother had lived she would of been one hundred years old today. I am her ninth child and will be 72 in August.
Well Mae guess you all have
(Page 3) have your cards by now. Well the legislature made Dallas a visit. Dallas shure did did her best of it. Was on short order. I can’t brag on some of their looks, or even looking like law makers. Pretty (illegible - looks like “gaun”). Claud, if I can get in quilt piecing notion again will make your promised quilt. Think I have scraps for Lems, if not will buy some more. I know where to get them, a calico dress maker
(Page 4) lives close by. She gives me a bundle occasionally. Well I have nothing to write of interest. Will close. Pearl why can’t you write some. I have heard of you traveling around some. How are you and Tom getting on. Babie 8 (?) would crie and make them let me go to school, Aurther you must learn fast who knows you may make a quiet (?) man some day. Though, I may not be here.
(Page 5) All be good, write soon. Will answer Ida’s letter and to bed. Willie Walter from (?) me in love to all.
Bye Bye.
From,
Mamaw

155, Gaston Ave
Dallas, Tex.
This is very interesting. My mother, JoAnn, was born in Kansas, in 1915. She married my father, Leon Forman, in 1939. They moved to Long Beach Ca. in 1946. I was born in 1949, an only child. Both parents passed in 1999, mother was 83, father was 85. Nothing much was ever said about Philip, so I asumed I would never know anything about him. My uncle, Henry Ford Caperton, 87, is deceased and never had any children. I would like a picture of Philip if you have one. I never saw a picture of him. Also, what did he die of. I guess we are second or third cousins. I live in Fallbrook, Ca. which is in northern San Diego Co. Best wishes, Richard. Lee Caperton Forman.

Henry looks a lot like his father. Thanks for your help in finally finding my grandfather's side of the family. I really thought I'd go to my grave never knowing anything about the Capertons or the Fords. I did see Francis Walsh's name on the family tree. I do know that name, but never met her. Thanks for all your help. Lee

My uncle, Henry Ford Caperton was born in 1917. They divorced sometime in the early 1920's. I never knew anything about this side of my family.

I have been searching for a very long time for any information about my gr.grandmother Lula Caperton, from MS. My mother had very little information of her grandmother, Lula, other than that she was half Choctaw Indian. Lula b.1867 married Beauregard Buford in 1887 in Noxubee County, Mississippi I can find no records, other than her marriage to B.Buford, except on the 1880 US Fed Census. At that time she was 13 yrs. old and living as a student with a William H. Forbes family in Noxubee Co, MS.
I can find no information on Lula Caperton Buford's parents at all.
Apparantly, her mother was full-bloodied Choctaw Indian and married a Caperton (first name unknown)from MS or Tenn.
I would so appreciate any information that would help me find my gr.grandmother's family,....her Choctaw family or Caperton family.
There has always been a mystery over this missing link of information.
Please, if there's anyone out there that has any info., or any suggestions. HELP
I've researched extensively on this and other geneology sites, as well as trying on various Indian rolls. With no names, I've hit a wall.

Thanks for any help!

Hugh P. Caperton

In the 1850 Census for Jackson County, AL there is a Hugh P. CAPERTON age 45, born TN, wife Paulina age 41 born VA, Margaret E. CAPERTON age 19, born AL, Manerva Murphy, age 17, Hugh J. Norwood age 16 AL, Student.

What is the maiden name of Paulina Caperton? Two years earlier, in 1848 DeKalb County, a John G. Winston had named a daughter, Paulina Caperton Winston. Manerva Murphy, above, had a brother named Mardis Murphy, born 1834. He married Margarette Winston and they named their only daughter, Paulina Jane Murphy.

Can anyone give me the correct relationship between the Caperton, Murphy and Winston Families? I feel the maiden name of Hugh Caperton's wife might solve this puzzle. Thanks for your help.

Janelle Cobb

Caperton History

After reading the threads I am amazed at the extent of this family. I worked my way back to John Caperton and then I get stuck on his birth date, Lots of people put down 1725 but according to the referenced book that was the date he came to new york. I wish that people would finish the threads and complete the line of thinking. I like Don Capertons' Site http://www.caperton.info/
Could someone please Go to the cemetery and shoot the Head stones for us. That would be great. Post the pictures on Dons Site.
Kevin Davidson
Hi Aunt Kacy!
I am Rob's daughter. I found this by complete accidents and thought that it was pretty neat. Honey died when he was 90 years old and Kid died two years ago at 102 years old. I see that I am responding to something posted 7 years ago, but if you are still checking this and would like any further information, we still have the same address and phone number.
-Ashley Coyle

What is the source of the 10 page history on John and Polly?
I have the history as published in THE CAPERTON FAMILY HISTORY by Bernard Caperton. If this is a different history, is there any way you could email it. Maico55@aol.com

I just found an inquiry about Tom Caperton. I have an Uncle Tom Caperton who lived in Cowan, TN. This is just over the mountain from Jackson County, Alabama. He worked for the railroad.

If this might be the one you are looking for and if you have not found information, please contact me.
