Greetings from Maine, USA
I wanted to let folks know that I have been digging into Caouette/Gaouette and
I now can say I am a descendant of Julien Caouette b.1766 (m. Marie Royer in St-Hyacinthe) son of Claude-Raphael Caouette and Elisabeth-Ursule Cloutier.
The name Caouette went through three generations, until the third Julien(who was captured by Indians at approx 5 y/o) began using Gaouette some time after he was re-introduced to his family,
Julien used the name "Narsisse", possibly a middle name? or something relating to his time with the Indians?
He moved to st Denis: married Lucie Phaneuf, daugter of Jean Baptiste Phaneuf and then moved to MASS with some of his family in approx 1872.
He was then known in MA as "Nelson" Gaouette
There were three brothers that we know of from Claude: Julien, Simon, and Joseph.
More to come!
Rich
