I am trying to help Anthony Canafax (age 17) find his family. His parents were divorced when he was about 2 years old. His father was William Anthony Canafax born in Iowa in 1959. He was African-American. Anthony's parents were married in Anchorage, Alaska in Feb of 1982. After much work, we have found out that his grandmother was Elvira Canafax. She too was African-American. We don't know her maiden name nor the name of her husband. We do know that she was born in 1915 and received her Social Security card while living in California. We also know that she was in Anchorage, Alaska in June of 1982 when she passed away. We believe that her body was sent back to Kentucky to be buried. Any help would be immensely appreciated. Thank You!

There are African American Cannifax/Canafax families living in Springfield, Greene Co, MO today. They are the descendants of slaves from the household of Radford Cannifax who came to Greene Co, MO ca 1832. There may also be some in Logan Co, KY the descendants of Radford's son Calvin.

I know my cousin recently met an African-American man in TX who said he knew a Cannifax/Cannafax man who was a Minister in Chicago.

To: Rosemary Shields. Thanks for your attention. I did find my friend's missing father in July of 2000. The line did connect through the Canafax line in Springfield, Missouri. My friend's unknown grandfather turned out to be William Jackson Canafax, a prominent Methodist minister who practiced in Springfield and in Peoria, Illinois prior to his death. It was a real joy to see this young man find his father. His father had also been looking for him for over 15 years without success. Thanks again. DW

I am so thrilled for your friend. You are so nice to do this for him. I imagine the Methodist Minister was the one my cousin heard about.

My ancestor Radford Cannifax was also a Methodist. There is a Methodist minister named Wilson Cannifax in Texas today, descendant of Radford's younger brother Benjamin.
