Canady eastern North Carolina

I am searching for information on an Elijah Canady and his wife Roxana. They appear in the 1850 Swansboro (Onslow County) census with the following children listed: James, Reuben, Harriett, Henry. Elijah is my 3rd great grandfather and I am having difficulty finding any information further back in the family line

Hi Carrie. Do you have any male Canady relatives? Have you undergone Family Tree DNA testing? I have Cannady men in my DNA group. Thanks. Kim

Hi Kim, I have not had any DNA testing but my great grandfather was John Henry Canady from Onslow County North Carolina. The lineage is through my father's mother. There were many Canady families in this area but I don't know how we tie in with them.
Where do I go to find out about the DNA testing? I do have two brothers if we need the male DNA.
Thanks,
Carrie

Elijah is also my 3rd great grandfather. I'm from the lineage of his son James. I can't get any further than Elijah either. Let's keep in touch. I just ordered the DNA test and hoping the results that link you with possible cousins may help some.

I found the graveyard in Swansboro that has many of the canady family buried there. I know my great grandfather as well as his wife and other relatives are there.

This is exciting. What graveyard did you visit? My lineage is through Elijah's youngest son John Henry. He had a son named John Henry as well who is my great grandfather. He is buried in Piney Grove Cemetery with his wife Carrie Stanley Canady. I hope you find out some additional information.

Hello Carrie. It took me a while to figure out what the name of the cemetery was but it was also Piney Grove. Alot of the Canady's are there. My great grandad is buried there. His name was Robert. His dad was James N Canady which would have been John Henry's brother. I found James obituary...says he lost a leg in the civil war. Anyways i got my DNA results back and I have a lot of potential cousins listed. if i find any adidtioanl infomration on Elijah i'll let you know. Oh and i'm 17% irish, 68% great britian. I knew Canady was most ikely an irish family name so that makes sense.

Good luck with the family search. We are also related through the Stanley line. It is difficult for me to explain since I am not familiar with all the lingo. But James married Catherine Stanley. James' brother John Henry had a son also named John Henry (my great grandfather). The second John Henry married Catherine Stanley's niece Carrie Stanley, my namesake. Please keep me informed. I wonder where Elijah is buried. I have viewed all of the Onslow Co cemetery records that I can find on line and cannot find him. There was also an Elijah Canady from stump sound during the same time period so I have focused on the Swansboro area. Especially since his last known residence was the 1970 census living in Swansboro with James and Catherine. Many of my ancestors are at Piney Grove. My grandmother whose maiden name was Canady married a Phillips.

Thank you for obtaining your DNA and submitting it for testing. It is amazing that our Cannadys obtained land in Emanuel County, GA with the County Seat being Swainsboro.
