Surnames: DNA for all lines
If you have done DNA thru Ancestry, 23&Me or FT DNA you can download your raw data and then upload it to GEDmatch.com. Not sure but it could be helpful to all of you looking for another way to sort out who belongs to what line. GEDmatch is free for most of their services. It doesn't give you names of your ancestors but breaks your DNA down by chromosomes. It is definitely a learning curve for most of us including myself. Also you can upload a gedcom file from any genealogy program as long as it is a .ged file. I have done my DNA thru ancestry and have been able to find some new limbs for my tree by using this web site. What I have mentioned here is only a few of the things that you can do. They have a 3d chromosome browser that's really neat thing to see. But anyway I just thought that I would pass this along.

I have been using y-search.org to look for matches and assume most people would do the same.

I will take a look at this as a second alternative.

There is also Y Base. I do not know why we have to use so many different ones it only confuses people and lessens the chance of finding a match.

Duane,
are you sure it's y-search.org ?
when I go to that, this is what I get.....

Web Server's Default Page
This page is generated by Parallels Plesk Panel, the leading hosting automation software. You see this page because there is no Web site at this address.
You can do the following:
Create domains and set up Web hosting using Parallels Plesk Panel.

even with www.y-search.org, I get "server not found".

Thanks
Mindy

http://www.ysearch.org/

Takes me right to it.

Likewise a Google search took me there also

Duane,
your first message says y-search.org (with a dash after the "y") not ysearch.org (without the dash)

This site looks like its for Family Tree DNA users only. Do you know if that's true ?
GEDmatch.com takes FT DNA, 23&ME and Ancestry DNA raw data so it's not limited to only one place.

Take a look at this page.

http://www.thompsonfamilies.org/ysearch.htm

Anyone can use ysearch.

It is just easier if you tested with FTDNA.

I assumed that the largest company has the best chance of finding a match.
Hence I used FTDNA and ysearch.
I do think ysearch could do a better job of explaining that anyone can use it.
