I am trying to join "First Families of Maryland" with this line and need a document connecting Charles to his apparent father John. Does anyone have any source or document? thanks!

I, too, have Charles Canaday but I have been unable to go beyond him so was delighted to know of someone who had found his father. I have a John as his son but not as his father. Most of the information beyond Charles comes from his wife's side, the Beals. I would appreciate any information you have on the Canaday family. My mother was Zella Louise Canaday.

I think you need to check the book entitled "Southern Underwoods & Martins." The author, Billie Redding Lewis has a great deal of information on this family. It has been projected that the progenator of your Canaday family might have been a William, who was found in Somerset, Maryland in 1666. Further, it is believed that this William had two sons, John and Roger. John was born in Somerset County, Maryland @ 1680. The following are listed as the children of John: John Jr. (b. 1707, married Margaret Summers), Jane (b. 1714), Charles (b. 1715, married Phoebe Beales 1740), Mary (b. 1716, married John Vain) and Daniel (b. 1718, married Mary Vinton). If you cannot find the book send me your email and I will answer any questions you might have. I would also reccomend looking for a Bill Putman. He is an expert researcher on the Underwoods and Alied Families.

I have scanned everything (I think) I have and put it on my Ancestry tree. There is a lot "out there" on this family, but tracking down the actual documents is something else.

Thanks. As I noted to the other responder, there is a lot "out there" on the web and on Ancestry for these people, but pinning down documents is another matter. I have reviewed Quaker records in North Carolina and have engaged a researcher there and have obtained some records. I have perused Mr. Putnam's site and have corresponded with him, but he mainly compiled information and it does not appear he has many original documents. It appears the Lewis book is not available as ebook, or print on demand, ABE or Amazon, etc. A couple partial pages are on Google books. As you note above, they appear to be projections, surmises, etc,, which is interesting and may be true, but is just a guideline genealogy-wise. If you have access to a scanner, I would greatly appreciate the relevant Canaday pages, though, as any additional information would be helpful. Email is JohnLDodd@earthlink.net. Thanks again for offering assistance.

As far as I know no one has ever gotten further back than Charles in terms of actual records.
His records were destroyed when the house containing the records was destroyed by fire.
It was the house belonging to the clerk of the Quaker meeting he belonged to.
Then Charles was killed a short time after that and his wife remarried.

In my opinion the only way to get further back will be through DNA.
If we could just find people overseas and get them tested.
That seems to be the problem.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
