I am looking for the names of parents or siblings of Richard Canada (Canaday, Canady, Kenady, or any variation thereof) of North Carolina. A news article about Richard dated April 1, 1889 from the Kansas City Times gives his date of birth as May 25, 1805 in Grayson county, North Carolina.

Grayson County NC is throwing me for a loop—I’ve found a Grayson county Virginia, just over the border from North Carolina; and a city called Grayson in Ashe County NC. Does anyone know if there used to be a Grayson County NC, and it was perhaps absorbed by another state/county? All the censuses I’ve found him in list North Carolina as his birthplace…

This article also said Richard lived in Grayson County NC until he was about 18, then he moved to Anderson County, Tennessee where he married Matilda Lawson January 29, 1826. They moved to Warren County, Missouri in the fall of 1826 and stayed there until 1852 when they moved to Jackson, Linn County, Missouri. He died there on December 12, 1889 and is buried in the Mt Olive cemetery.

I haven’t been able to take this line back any farther than Richard! I’d love some help. Anyone?

Surnames: Canada, Lawson, Brown, Tatum
The Handy Book for Genealogists doesn't list a Grayson county as ever being in North Carolina. If it had been a county at any time in North Carolina, than it would have been listed in this book. And than listed to what happened to it. It does list a Grayson county in Virginia. Since Richard is listed as being born in NC, maybe they lived close to what was the border between the 2 states or even right on the border. If you could find a deed for Richard Canada or any Canada in that area, it might help. Or a will or an estate settlement in that area would also help.

It seems there is a community named Grayson in Ashe co NC. This could have caused who ever wrote the article about Richard Canada to think Grayson was a county?

I don't have any thing on Richard & Matilda Lawson Canada except info on their son, Isaac M, who married Emily Brown. I am sure that Emily Brown's parents were Benjamin Brown & Martha Tatum who are also buried in the Mt Olive cem., Shaftner, Linn co MO.

Hope this helps some.

It does help! If only to tell me I'm not crazy because I can't find it as a county. I'll check into your suggestions. Thanks so much!
