Thank you for any information u care to share with me. Have a great day!
Family of Charles Camper - VA/TN/KS

Hi, I am looking for any info on my gg grandfather, Charles D Camper, who was born in Mill Point (aka Morrell Mill) in Sullivan County, TN between 1870-1878. I believe his parents were David and Elizabeth Camper. David and his family lived in Mill Point from at least 1860-1880. David was born somewhere in VA around 1824. Would like to know more about David and Elizabeth also. Charles married Ellen Hagy and had several children, including my great-grandfather, Joseph Columbus Camper, Sr. Charles and family ended up in Emporia, KS.
Thank you for any and all info.
Tami Bennington

I wasn't able to find a direct female line for the mtDNA test. But with the new atDNA test and lots of supporting research I was able to confirm that my 3g grandmother who has been known as Louisa Ice is Louisa Camper (perhaps Alice Louisa Camper) who married first ?? Vann and later George W. Ice.

atDNA (called Family Finder by FamilyTree DNA company) provides matches for "cousins." In addition to confirming my research on Louisa Ice, it has also provided connections to other ancestral lines. I am still looking for that Vann husband.

I can fill in some of the information you're needing. Birdie was my great grandmother. Her name was Essie Birdie Camper Bishop born March 1897. Her father was George Eskridge Camper(Camphor or Kemper)Mother was Sarah(Sara) Marinda Kirkham. Essie married a Robert Taylor Bishop(was told by my grandfather). Her siblings were Mary Camper Wright, Paul E Camper, James R Camper,Elizabeth(Lizzie) Helen Camper Bishop (married the brother of Robert Taylor) Joseph Larkin Bishop. Edith Thelma Camper.I may have missed some but those are the ones I know. Essie had 3 son's Bulter Bishop born Abt 1919(my grandfather) Robert Bishop(aka Buddy Bishop)born Abt 1923 Charles Hoyle Bishop(Aka Tar Baby) born Abt. 1925. I found a 1930 census that states that Essie's mother's name was Mary but the family always said that Essie's mother was Miranda Camper. I was told that George Camper lived with Essie Bishop until his death in 1942. Most of the Bishop's are buried in the Dalton Cemetery in Grainger County,TN. Please note I may have some dates wrong. Esther Thelma Bishop was married several times. Her last name at the time of her death was Parker. She was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville,KY. I lived with her when I was younger.I got to meet and visit Mary and Helen also. Charles Hoyle was married to a Thelma, but I don't know her maiden name. She's still alive and lives in BeanStation,TN.
I would love to trade notes!

Your grandmother was my aunt. She passed away before I was born. Napoleon would be your GGGgrandad as he is my GGgrandad! My Dad is Francis (aka Buck), Aileen's brother. Their father was William Camper,Jr. His father was William Camper and his father was Napoleon Camper. I have not been able to go back any further than Napoleon, and yes, he was a tool maker. He was married to a woman by the name of Mary Hunt. Let me know if you've discovered any other info.

Your cousin, Pat

That would make her my third cousin, twice removed.
The DNA test was valuable to me because it confirmed my research when I was unsure of my 3g grandmother's maiden name. You have to match the test with good genealogy research to find a close connection. And it may mean testing more than one family member if you don't have someone from a direct female line (mtDNA). Ditto for the male (yDNA) line. Three of my close family members have been tested.
Contact me via e-mail and we can have further discussion.

I was trying to find direct female descendants of Mary Campbell for mtDNA test. Since this time, I found out using the autosomal DNA test (Family Finder), that I have a match with a descendant of Robert Hurt Camper. So I am confident that Louise ___ Vann Ice is Louisa Camper Vann Ice.

Is your line through Maggie's daughter Opal? Because I was looking for female descendants, I only recorded daughters in my notes.

Family info says they were from Federalsburg, MD. I have not been able to confirm this. I know that they came to Chester, PA around 1870 or 1871. I am trying to get more info about them in Maryland. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Origin of Camper surname

I believed that the Camper surname began when Johannes Kemper changed his name to John Camper when he arrived in the Germanna Colony in 1715.
I have recently found a census record for a Fredrick Camper, b. 1815 Hanover Germany, in the 1880 census for Clay township, Ottawa County Ohio. This may be another Americanation of a German surname or it could be his birth name.
Has anyone traced a Camper direcyly back to Europe?
