Celia - The name seems to be found in Croatia..most often in Lussinpiccolo and Lussingrande (now Losinj, Croatia), which appears on maps as 2 little islands in the Adriatic Sea but must have been considered 1 island because they were so close togethr.

Find a large map of Croatia or Yugoslavia. Near the border with Slovenia is the city of Rijeka and off the coast of this city is the island of Cres. East of Cres are 3 smaller islands very close to the mainland. The one named "Losinj" is the former Italian possession "Luccino". Atlas states that Cres has a connecting bridge with its neighbor Losinj so the larger island closest to Cres must be Lussingrande and the small one in the middle may be Lussinpiccolo.

My father said his parents were AUSTRIAN since they were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the Empire fell these islands passed back and forth as Italy struggled for control of seaports at Fiume and Triests...every time the boundary moved the islands went to a new owner with the seaports.

Do you know the name of the son that came to Philadelphia? In addition to my grandfather Bernardo or "Marco", b. abt. l874, I have found 3 others in Phila: Louis, b. Lussinpiccolo July 29, l888, came to US 1896, wife named Lena, b Abt. 1890 Italy. Also, Nunzio Camalichio, b. abt 1883 Italy, came to US 1898, wife Anna, b. abt 1890, son Phillip b. 1910 Phila. There was also Vincenzo Camalicchio, b. abt 1891, came to US 1909, was single and living in a boarding house in 1910.

In 1994 I had a letter from th daughter of a John Camalich, b. 1882 in Luccino, came to U.S. 1905, wife Minnie Bacich, b. Punta Krija on the island of Krk, came to US 1907-08.

Contact me direct. Have you checked The Croatia Country Message Board under FamilyHistory.com? Just found it...lots of Austrians!
